Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

I'd take Marner in a heartbeat if he were willing to come here. And they could justify blowing up the salary structure on him - no issue with him making lots more than Barzal, Horvat, etc.. The big question, after Marner's willingness, is the owner's willingness. But maybe if season ticket renewals lag he'll feel the need to do something drastic?

The salary structure is going to get blown up one way or another with the cap rising like 25M over the next three years. People won't like it, but it's still fully within the realm of possibility we see Dobson get a higher AAV than Horvat

With the risk of this turning political I don't know if those rosy cap numbers are realistic anymore, very much in a wait and see mode.

Regardless of the ups and downs of the economy, Malkin is going to have a hard time getting people to pay $5-10K or more for season tickets in Elmont unless the Isles become legitimate contenders. Good luck with that happening unless Lou gets replaced.

Just because there was a Malkin sighting with Lou gives me no solace. He needs to grow a pair and replace the old codger.

welllllll........we beat the Pens and were within striking distance of the 8th seed again. Worst PK and worst PP in the league. fun season eh? not! Isles season ticket rep still up in my grill for 2025-2026 season tickets

Salaries will increase, but the Isles have been very incremental in doling out salaries vis a vis the cap. So, giving someone 12M+ AAV would be "blowing it up" relative to the current $9M high, but Marner's numbers would justify that kind of salary.

It is ludicrous that this team is within striking distance of the second wildcard spot, and also still within striking distance of the 6th overall pick. The race for the final wildcard spots in the East have been pathetic the last two years, but this year might be the most pathetic of all.

This post is an obvious political dig at Trump while saying you don't want it to be political.
Frankly, I didn’t see it that way. Many economists, irrespective of their political leanings, are suggesting a slowdown and some even a recession. In any event, this board is an escape for me and I have no interest in talking politics here.

How many points out would Lou have to be to plug Martin back into the lineup and rest Sorokin in favor of The Hog Skarek?

Those would be two major changes that would contribute to the tank but also have some merit. Getting Martin closed to 1k GP and scouting if The Hog Skarek can actually play in the NHL with a decent workload.

Edited to the The Hog as pointed out by @MJF

Hogberg’s back.

This is true - but that’s just business baby. Hopefully Marner’s agent knows that, and if Lou is the guy that both drafted you and makes you the highest paid player in hockey what use is it to hold a grudge?
I'm assuming this is the case as well. The 2 million dollar performance bonuses for each year of the ELC could still be a thorn!

Yeah, our world hasn't been affected at all. Right?

Oh idc one way or the other. It's a hockey message board not a place to start a post by saying you don't want something to turn political.

is it? did he?

you guys are the mods but maybe let’s drop this one here and just let life play out.

Yes he did. He already liked the above post. Making political digs on a hockey message board is a loser move.

Talk about how Lou is too old to run the show, not the people America elects.

Listen, I like the guy but if that post was made from the opposite side of the opinion it would not have been allowed to ride on here either.

The value of the Canadian dollar affects the NHL and is worthy of discussion. It could result in a recalculating of the salary cap down the road.

That is completely fine and makes total sense. That being said the wording of your post and detail involved is 100% less political than Eck.

I would be curious to see how the 2008 recession impacted the salary cap.

It's an attest to the general weakness in the conference this season. No team with special teams where ours are at should be anywhere near a PO spot.

But rest assured, we will ultimately pay tribute to having no Barzal or Nelson in the line-up.

The final 10-12 games always see things get cleaned up in a conference.

The absolute bottom feeders pull out "unexpected" wins as the safe teams are simply finetuning and perhaps resting some of their players, if not their #1 in goal in general.

We can keep rooting for the boys and not worry about things.

Either some players just doggone prove themselves to be much better than advertised or take a huge developmental step - or we land in a spot emblamatic of the actual talent currently on this roster, which would lead to a top 12, if not top 10 pick.

Whatever is done this summer, the gentlemen I most want to see on another roster next season are Pageau, Pulock, and Mayfield.

I like each for a number of different reasons but I just don't need to watch them play hockey anymore. That train has come and gone.

That moving their contracts would be beneficial on other roster-bearing fronts goes without saying.

You took a vague post about the future of the economy and immediately started crying about trump, who was not previously named.

It is very clearly you who is doing the exact thing you're complaining about.

From the posts I have always seen him make in the mod chat I think you'd understand but I completely understand your point of view. It was a clear dig from my point of view.

Anyhow, I don't have beef with him or any of you.

He is welcome to DM me whenever as the best course for the country is always to talk more to people you have differences with rather than put yourself in a little bubble and only talk to those you agree with. In all aspects of life that is how we grow as individuals in my opinion.

Without getting further into the political economy stuff - i do think it would be prudent for the Isles management not to operate as though the predicted cap hit is a certainty. Bettman is on record saying the NHL is concerned about the impact on league revenues.
