They're in the same boat the Isles are. They're not a desirable destination. They have to try and be creative and take risks. I have a hard time slagging them for this, even if it did blow up.
The Hurricanes biggest asset is still their trading. I just don't get their goal long term
People here should appreciate Lou more.
Yes and no because Lou has done both good and bad. I just think we're going to remember the bad more.

With the cap expected to jump so much maybe Brock thinks he can get a lot more?

Or just wants more years. Either way, for now Brock did us a huge favor. Let’s hope Palmieri does the same.
Let’s hope. I do find it funny though that Lou is fine handing out 7 year deals to bottom of the lineup guys like Mayfield and Engvall but draws the line at 3 for a franchise legend lol.

For what? He tried to re-sign Nelson which was the wrong decision and he rejected, at that point he just called a bunch of teams and than got a best offer which is a common sense thing to do, the fact he is still trying to sign Palmieri shows how out of touch he is, a real GM at this moment would go hard and have a legit fire sale especially in this sellers market and look to unload everything that is over 30 and we would have maybe a dozen extra picks and prospects we could use to draft or use to trade if we want a quick re-tool, instead we are going to let those assets go to waste or wait until they are older and are worth less

Yeah - I see comments about how the COL offer may not have been the best that Lou received. Not so sure about that. COL can operate under the assumption that Nelson may not be a pure rental. They can try him out and vice-versa, and if it works out there's a decent chance he may be willing to extend there. And if he doesn't, no big deal because someone else will want to play in Denver and they'll have Brock's cap space to sign that guy. We're down on the floor with the other dogs waiting for the scraps to fall off the table of the Original 6/SunBelt/tax haven/etc. franchises.

Sure, but it’s more the reality check is coming due. Their best player had to sign an offer sheet to get paid. A guy that wanted to get paid long term, the team didn’t want to pay so he gets traded. They traded for a UFA last season that walked bc they didn’t want to pay him.

So, in the season where it’s known a big bump is coming on the salary cap, the el cheapos trade for a guy that is a top UFA and wants to be paid.

That’s not creative when they set the precedent on how they are with contracts. Even if they threw a ton of money at Ratanen - he would be the exemption and other players would follow the pattern set by the organization. They were not resetting it.

I am guessing that since lou is still trying to sign palms, he hasnt. if he hasnt....he doesnt want to. so he'll get traded. but it also shows an alarming misunderstanding of this teams position. they are a mediocre team. it needs to be younger, faster and better. they should be trading palms, and anyone else that is near contract expiration that has value. why resign him now? resign him in july if he is so interested in staying. the best case scenario is that this is some sort of level of performance art trying to showcase his loyalty to his players.

A JGP or Czikas to TOR for Robertson would be a nice deal for both sides. Robertson cost controlled with some offense can start to build out the 3rd line, fill in on 2nd in spot duty. Toronto doesn’t need him for the playoffs and can use some depth/jam in that lineup.

To echo others, if the reports are true it’s alarming (but not exactly unexpected) that Lou is still trying to sign all these guys, and just getting saved from himself.
They are important to the team. We need to consider the cost of replacement too.

Moving Kylington would seem to indicate he's working on another deal and doesn't want that salary/contract, no?

Hopefully Palmieri goes and then one of these defensemen.
The Kylington move is interesting, because I thought we had a real chance to move Mayfield to someone like Toronto.

I just hope people are prepared for the summer in free agency and trade market.

Sam Bennett has never cleared 50 points in a season and Friedman thinks he’s going to get 8 annually, maybe more maybe less. I don’t need to be told on the intangibles he brings but let’s also be realistic that we are trading away 50 goals from Nelson and Palms. There’s going to be money cost and asset cost out of this to replace.

This was my crux on the whole deadline. I want Palms gone because I like Tsyplakov and Holmstrom. I think internally we can have a solution but their spots need to then be replaced but that’s cheaper. Nelson is going to be hard to replace. Pageau is a toolbox, he is going to be hard to replace. Just keep it in mind.

Likelihood the Isles trade a RHD today? Roster size increases, so they don't have to. But today might be the best chance to move Mayfield. And if they're not sold on Dobson long term, he could return a younger forward to step in right now. Maybe call BUF?

If we are doing a comprehensive retool/rebuild (whatever), then they're less important than the assets we get back.
Ultimately I’ll agree.

But now let’s look ahead. Let me know who you think may be available to replace 30 goals, all situations that Nelson plays. Let’s not discount his leadership but also let’s be fair and overlook that for now.

What contracts and what assets are we spending here.

I’ve highlighted McCann who is younger at the same position. He’s 28, cost controlled for two more years I think at a nice number. He’s a playoff bust with 6 points in 20 games. Idk about where he plays on the PP or PK but let’s agree Nelson isn’t a good PP guy and maybe McCann doesn’t PK, idk. He’s had 27, 40, 29 so a little downgrade in goals but this year definitely down at 16.

What’s his cost?

Agree with others that a CC and Mayfield for Robertson plus would be a solid haul.

Lou should listen on JGP and I have a gut feeling Palms is going to the Kings. They could use a rhs winger.

Curious what the Jets and Leafs are going to do.
