I almost feel bad for Engvall’s play being discussed like this. He has not been good, but neither has the rest of the team. Is just one of many problems. He has always been like this.
I think the point Roy is trying to drive home is that Engvall has the talent to play at a much higher level consistently than he does and it frustrates him. Whereas some of the other guys on the Isles are playing badly but that is all they have to give. Those guys don't have another level.

While I do think they would be in a playoff spot if they had everyone healthy I also believe two things:

- they would still be lucky to win a playoff round.
- truly good teams can withstand multiple injuries to the point where Vegas and Tampa mysteriously put their best players on LTIR until the playoffs.

Trade Palmieri. Trade Dobson. I would personally sign Nelson.
Love Nelson, but if you're going to rebuild, he's got to go. The assets the Isles would get would be the cornerstone of the rebuild.

Someone will probably interpret this as "Lou Support", but if you look at the NYI and NYR situations as apples and apples with the difference being the GMs, I think you're looking through glasses that are... tinted.
The meaning unless I misstated, was the NYR GM finds a way to get maximum return for every move they make, Lou on the other hand, just cant and it might be the contracts he hands out to players with limited desirability from other teams. The longer he remains as GM , the deeper we get at making a quick correction possible.

Ana took on Trouba bc he has term, $8M cap hit vs $6M in salary (net cash savings of $4M), they swung and missed in the UFA market last summer.

With the alleged cap bump coming and Anaheim still stinking, they run the risk of having to scramble to make the cap floor as it’s not a desirable place to play (now) and the more prominent teams will have more cap space to pay UFAs.

I doubt this happens as he seems like the most unmotivated player to move on from his situation, is it gives them flexibility to move Gibson, if he decides to move on - again, doubt it. He’s ‘comfortable’ where he is. This is a guy that lives in SoCal and routinely spends his summers back home in the Pittsburgh area.

What is the purpose of signing Nelson? Do you see this team as having any chance of winning a cup in the next 3-4 years? I have no idea how anyone has a mentality other than trade everyone and hope to get some good picks and prospects and maybe in 3-4 years we could be optimistic again

Just for the record I have also stated I am FINE trading Nelson. I think the return would be absolutely massive for him and Palmieri. That being said I also think if this team goes into a retool you still need vets to bring the youngsters along the way. The answer is to never trade everyone. You need to pick who from the current core can help bring the future core into a contender.

Trading Lee, Pageau, Pulock, Pelech, Nelson, and Palmieri and great until you realize that teams like Buffalo and Detroit did the same exact thing in this new NHL Lottery era and have struggled mightily to be true winners.

Hard to bank on this but doesn’t Nelson seem like a player we can trade now but resign in offseason?

He does seem like one. However, once he gets to free agency who knows what would happen.

And if you are the NYI, you call up OTT 5 games after Barzal is back and offer him up plus a Czikas and Pulock/Pelech for Tkachuk and something else.

OTT doesn’t need picks, they need veteran players to push them up. OTT shouldn’t take Laffy from NYR bc that doesn’t help them, that’s neutral to ‘back in rebuild mode.’

There is no “future core” if players in high demand like Nelson don’t get dealt.

You make it sound like we have a dearth of “gritty veterans” to help the young’ns, when that’s actually like 75% of the roster.

Aside from Cizikas, nearly every Isles player of significance has a full or modified no trade clause.

Barzal is not going to Ottawa. I suspect most players with any NTC or NMC would veto a trade there.

Yet…the Trouba saga just showed how well ironclad those NMC/NTC are.

When you are not wanted, players bend.

If he went to waivers, then SJ - CHI - Ana was the order.

You think SJ or Chi would have picked him up from waivers? Otherwise Anaheim could have picked him up for nothing.

There’s a difference between not being wanted combined with a threat of being sent to ride the bus in the AHL vs being a bonafide NHL regular that a team wants to trade so the franchise moves in a new direction.

Would you trade BTkachuk straight up for Barzal?
No, what does that do for us really? BTkachuk has done nothing to make Ottawa a better team. He's not his brother, not even close. He brother has that Xfactor..... Who's getting BTkachuk the puck in scoring opportunites on our team? Horvat, Pageau, Maclean? lol
