Engvall’s contract buyout would be $10M over 10 years. $1M/year is inconsequential with respect to the salary cap.

Not so long ago the Wild bought out Parise and Suter for way more $. Last I looked, that hasn’t hurt them.
That’s my point - the drama over Engvall’s contract is unfounded. Cutting him loose is a rounding error.

Same probable goes for mayfield contract, which is why I was never annoyed by it

Mayfield plays a solid game and if he left would have left, he would had to be replaced by a more expensive and older player.

As for term what contract ever ages well? The cap will go up and buying out both those guys shouldn’t be a problem. Sad to see Engvall buyout will prob happen much earlier than expected.

It’s all a gamble. If both play well contracts are a steal.

Those 2 contracts?
Money wise isn’t that bad, term?
Doesn’t ownership have any oversight?
My God
Those 2 contracts should have Lou let go

Those 2 players are easily replaced every year
On a minimum contract

That Lou gave both of them 7 year deals?!!!
Why?

Ownership needs a steward, I guess Lou as president was that
Then need an independent GM

This organizational structure?
Lou answer to Lou?
Then bullshits ownership?
Not about to defend these two contracts but Mayfield specifically was a move to bring the AAV down. He could have gotten as much as 5x5 in UFA, maybe even six years at slightly lower AAV, but this was a run it back move and the structure was the best way to fit it under the cap.

I was of the mindset that maybe it would have been better to sell if we could get a first for him, but yadda yadda, “sends the wrong message in a playoff race”, etc.

EDIT: buyout cost also a good point, albeit i’ve never looked it up for Mayfield, which is a good sign.

Mayfield type player can be had for league min. He can’t skate, puck handling is weak , these types are readily available. Only thing he has going for him is size

Name 5 of these types getting 15-20 minutes per night.

On this train wreck of a defensive breakdown team that has a - 10 goal differential, he’s a +10 averaging 18 mins a night.

The return rate on traded UFAs is very very low. However, if Lou is paying, then I can see Palms being traded, then coming back in the summer.

Less so on Nelson, if traded.

Hell
Dobson is starting to look like last year's Dobson. Horvat breaking out of the funk. Barzal, Duclair, Pelech all skating. Add it all up and we have a team juuuust good enough to squeak into 8th place if they don't deal Nelson or Palmieri. Worst possible thing for the franchise tbh

The worst possible thing for the franchise would be a lengthy rebuild, missing the playoff for 5+ years, then coming out of it no better than before the rebuild.

Again.

Without spending too much time, Cholowski who many didn’t like here minus myself has a +7 playing just over 12 minutes. So an argument can be made he might exceed +10 playing 6 more minutes a night or maybe not but the point is there are players.

Please, please lets not compare Cholowski to Mayfield or anyone. This guys is a fringe player. I understand Mayfiled is slipping and whatnot, but I'll take Mayfield over him all day.

No one should think that Cholowski and Hutton are anything more then backups and nothing more.

I typically use the Cole Bardreau/Kyle MacLean example to show why you do not sign these bottom line guys long term. Even the minor leaguers can squeeze out a season in the role if needed.

I would take Cholowski all day over Mayfield in a game where I want to move the puck. The point was he has a plus 7 with less ice time, Mayfield a plus 12 so in my eyes there are similar players who could be a plus D for less than Mayfield

Interesting thought, and I'd take Palms back on a one year deal if they trade him at the deadline. It's actually good asset management if he accepts that. Then they can trade him again in 2026.

Palms probably seeks out a 2 year deal to avoid hoteling back to back. Some guys don’t mind it, others may do so. Palms has shown enough that he can get a 2-3 year deal in the summer from someone.

Henrique and Eberle 2 year deals are comparables for Palms.

If he would exchange the security of a 3 year deal for 3.5/4.0 aav I'd resign him . They have no wingers in B'port ready to push him out of a job .
