Wow. Collins is a huge get.

Serious question...Are you really familiar with him or are you just going off what you heard? I don't know him so looking for information on what he will bring to the team.

I never knew of him until today, but I read his resume and it's very impressive. The NHL's marketing department is an embarrassment, so for him to pull all of this off with literally no help is amazing.

Don't know what he will do for the Isles, but I'm excited to see what they have in store at least.

I’ve been familiar with him since the NHL hired him. He was on Bob McCown’s show numerous times and John Shannon had talked a lot about him back in the day when he pioneered the outdoor games and the HBO show. Shannon and McCown had lamented the loss when he left the NHL. So, yes, was very familiar with him and the impact people like John Shannon felt he had on the sport.

I believe that the Canes secret to success is their identity and systems, bringing in/drafting players who fit into Brind'Amour's style of play......pressure the puck, pinch up with all 5 players, throw almost everything to the net, and skate, skate, skate. You need player buy in and I am sure that nobody sees ice time who doesn't fit into that system. It is a risk playing that way unless they do execute and support each other. The weakness will be if they will wear down.
Islanders are build a different way.
When the Hurricanes are healthy, they create their offense off the rush, like so many teams do. The Islanders create their offense off the forecheck. Time and again we see how skating teams gain the upper hand against the Islanders just with a speedy backcheck. That forces the Isles to try to make plays to gain the O zone, and they aren't quick enough or skilled enough to do that.

Wow. Collins is a huge get. Maybe he’ll pioneer a team doing its own streaming service so I can get rid of shitty Sportsnet. ;)
There are now 2 teams moving away from RSNs and will start airing their games free on over the air local stations next year-the Phoenix Suns and the Vegas Golden Knights. There may be something to what your suggesting for the Islanders and starting their own streaming service.

Collins was very much considered a media innovator within the NHL. So it’s intriguing to think about it. He led the NHL’s partnership / investment into what was the MLB BAM, so he knows the space.

Bob McCown is far more interested on his show / podcast about the business of sports than he is what happens on the field, and they were quite certain his departure from the NHL was a net loss for the league. So I think it’s a big deal to get him.

They're past the foundation part though, the building should've been completed by now. What even is their foundation? They have a million UFAs and no money to do anything, again.
I think the leafs have proven the way to win a championship is to not have almost 50% of your salary cap tied to 4 forwards.

Embrace the status quo.
Well, Newsday is very confident to report Lamoriello will be asked back – likely on a new, three-year deal – though it almost certainly never will be announced and the only way to confirm the news will be just seeing him continue his Hall of Fame career.

I guess I'm OK with him being back, but I don't want him being the GM anymore.

Honestly, even if he's "just president" it's like he's defacto GM anyway. Aside from the fact he's the type of executive who's involved in every single facet of the team right down to how information is released (or released at all), the choices that he'd have to be GM would be more likely to be more easily controlled as experienced GMs would not want to take the job.

To me it's time for him to go 100%.

I'm legitimately concerned he's just going to die and that'll put the team in a bind.

There's a really sick joke to make here, but I'll hold off.

Instead I would argue that the team is already in a bind given they are very average and aging with a lack of cap space, players to trade, picks to use, and farm system of any kind. That is a recipe for non-contention for years.

And so even if what you suggest happens I'm confident these same owners who have been first class since taking over will figure it out.

To hear this coming from you of all people is...I mean, groundbreaking to say the least. :sarcasm:

I understand what you're saying, even if we disagree on the severity of the bind, but bind I'm specifically referring to is the scramble that would ensue if such an event were to happen. Even with competent owners the fact that Lamoriello has the final say on everything means there would be a time a turbulence for all the different areas in the organization that he's involved in.

The owners would figure it out but how quickly? What if it happens suddenly and it's near the trade deadline? What if it's at the start of free agency? It would be a massive issue and would impact the franchise's ability to make clear and sound decisions.

This isn’t Succession an AGM will fill in on an interim role.

And the AGM happens to be the GM's son, it's pretty obvious who would become the interim GM if Lamoriello ran into health issues or worse.

Now we have an interim GM who is dealing with personal issues, awesome. That's precisely what I don't want to happen.

I don't need to derail this anymore than I already have. I just think whoever is going to take over for the interim would need to share Lou's vision 100%. My preference is that they're around the NHL club from now on and are dealing with all the day to day things.
