Like I said in my original post, I genuinely believe you are rationalizing Lamoriello losing Eberle and Toews.

The whole point of acquiring Palmieri was to add scoring depth behind the Barzal-Eberle duo, which statistically performed on par with the regular season numbers in the playoffs.

Instead, Lamoreillo replaced Eberle with Palmieri and the Islanders were back to went right back to where they were before acquiring Palmieri, being a top six RW short.

I've been fine with the Romanov trade, but Lamoriello still never replaced losing two above average puck carrying defenseman and the team has suffered because of i
I think Palmieri was signed for exactly that reason, to replace Eberle’s production at a lower cost, not to provide depth behind Eberle.

Wahlstrom was supposed to be the scoring depth behind Palms, but that still hasn’t happened yet and Palms never stayed healthy.

If you could move Palmieri and his salary and u don’t have to retain or attach an asset or take back salary - Lou has to do it.

Just to throw fuel on the Fire, when Palmieri was acquired the other forward available was Taylor Hall. I get that hes a whiney little Bitch and I like Kyle.

But it shows the mind set with the brain trust thats gotten a little stale. Yes I like rugged players, but Hall is proving now what a high skill guy he is. Perhaps Lou didn't trade for him because he wasn't one of "his" guys and had a better shot at signing Palmieri to an extension.

More speed and skill please.

While the results were meh on this season I thought Lou did a fairly decent job.

Brought in Horvat and Romanov long term. Picked up decent pieces in Fasching and Engvall. I am hoping Engvall can be a long term piece while Fasching MAY replace a guy like Clutterbuck or Martin.

This offseason I would like to see him actually take a chance on some lower tier free agents. Max Domi, Dylan Strome, and John Klingberg are three guys who got one year deals that Lou should have been all over. While Klingberg was likely out of our cap range Domi and Strome were more than affordable and put up fantastic seasons. Sam Bennett went from being a bust to scoring 28 goals last season and putting up back to back 40+ point seasons for the Panthers.

Simply put Lou needs to hit some gold this offseason is places where other NHL teams missed out. When Lou first came here he hit gold for our bottom six in Komarov, Martin, Filppula, and then Lehner who had an all star season. This was a major reason why the team made the playoffs that season. Filppula was an amazing addition that everyone else missed out on.

Gotta make more moves like he did when he first came here. You gave this core their chance the last two seasons but now it is time to mix it up more.

I think Hall wanted to go to Boston and didn't want to be "the guy" for any team, looking for a secondary role. Lamoriello also got Zajac in the Palmieri deal which was important for depth at the time. Also, while Hall is the more talented player between the two I seem to recall Hall doing next to nothing that playoffs against the Islanders and was part of the reason his team got bounced.

Lee’s cap hit and term is impossible to move and Pageau still has value.

I hope you are right on the bolded. To me Pageau is a shell of his former self after injuries sustained on the two deep playoff runs. I cannot imagine a team wanting him unless they were taking cap back in a larger deal.

Lee would be extremely hard to move. What value would you be happy with getting for JGP? Id take a midround pick and wouldnt look back. Moving JPG and Bailey would give us enough cap space to acquire a top 6 winger.

Not Bailey, Martin and Clutter. You find any way possible to move them off the roster pronto.

Completely agree. Id take a 4th line of Fasching-Cizikas-Durandeau/Holmstrom

Solid take. Whatever approach they take, I just hope the result isn't multiple playoff-less seasons.

I hope in the future this level of thinking does not attribute to whether or not the organization should commit a long term deal to players. We saw this with both Eberle and Palmieri.
They knew Eberle would be taken by Seattle. They couldn’t afford to lose two top six RWs and rely on UFA to find a replacement. Re-signing Palmieri was an obvious choice at the time.

Oh I agree. But the Islanders were also hoping big time that Seattle took Eberle or Bailey. This is part of the reason why we saw the fourth line kept. Seattle likely would have picked one of them and the Isles would have been stuck with a big Eberle contract that was handed out due to a good first round against Pittsburgh.

Hindsight is 20/20 but ponder this:

If the Isles really wanted Seattle to pick Bailey they should’ve given Seattle a sweetener. Granted there was a consensus that teams did that to a fault with the Vegas expansion draft but I suspect a third rounder and certainly no more than a second rounder would’ve gotten it done.

In that scenario the Palmieri deal and the loss of a first round pick wouldn’t have happened. A different deal using that pick might have worked out better. What that deal was, dunno and don’t recall who was reported to be on the market.

Looking at salary and term, Eberle’s cap hit is only $500K more than Palmieri’s and his deal expires one year earlier. His final year also has only $3.75M of actual salary making it easier to trade away.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Unpopular opinion but maybe.... just maybe..... Bailey was better than Eberle.

There was a four year period where Bailey could fill in any role the isles needed and produce. He was also clutch in the playoffs.

I don’t see how anyone could have predicted him falling off so badly so fast. His decline left a major hole in the isles lineup that could not be filled.
