Obviously he meant between now and the deadline.
Horvat was indeed something we sorely needed but this team still needs more if it is his envision to compete this season. You can't keep filling your forward group with a bunch of B-rate prospects and extremely limited offensive veterans and expect to contend.
Having one of Martin and Johnston in there every night is bad enough, having both is demoralizing. Johnston hasn't scored an NHL goal in over a year. Then we have Hudson Fasching (4 goals in 67 career NHL games) who we are being forced to give 20 shifts a night coupled to what is usually 2-3 second rate prospects combining for another 30-35 minutes of ice time.
You aren't contending doing that, even if Barzal comes back.....period.
So, you have one of two options- either add and make this team somewhat resembling a sleeper of a contender (mainly with the hope it would be just enough offense if your stud goalie goes on shutdown mode) or facing the harsh reality that losing Barzal for an extended period erased the single tiny, minute, longshot, miracle chance you had anyway and look to sell what you can to help you not only in 2023-24 but for the Islanders future....
Doing neither would be an absolute failure...
The hockey people I chat with outside of Islanderville have - pretty much across the line - expressd to me that if you make the kind of move necessary to obtain a Bo Horvat (i.e. pay the price necessary) and it's not enough to safely have your team in the playoffs, you have no business paying anymore prices to invest in that particular outfit, 'cause the reasons why the team isn't safely in a playoff spot are, in essence, too deep and expanse to meaningfully erase with anymore deadline day purchases.
So, yes, the view I'm hearing is that there's no sense in further purchasing and it would be a real loss of opportunity not to sell, especially with several currently safe PO teams having a strong need for goaltending and a bonafide defensive Dman.
Just passing that outsider vantage point along...
