I’m pretty sure you misunderstood the point. The post wasn’t about comparing those respective Islanders teams. It was about the relative nature of fandom going to hyperbolic extremes. While the Islander dynasty teams are seen as some sacrosanct gold standard… @doublechili is pointing out that those very teams were being called to be dismantled by the fanbase at the time.
The difference of course being that one shouldn't have been dismantled and wasn't, while the other should be.

When you see a train wreck about to happen it's not hyperbole to scream at the top of your lungs.

Hyperbole is the best thing ever.

Moving Nelson makes absolutely no sense. He's actually been our best scorer. Worth the contract.

Lee will be hard to move. That was always a horrible contract.

At the deadline...Varly and Mayfield have to be moved. Losing them for nothing further sets this team back.

Other guys we should look to move this offseason...

Pageau - simply not worth what we gave up or signed him too.

Pulock - minus a a fluky goal last night, is a waste of a hard shot. Offensive game never developed whatsoever. Also not nearly physical enough for his size. He's a worser Adam Pelech.

Bailey is obvious but will also be tough to move. We may have to give up to get rid of him.

Clutter and Casey. Clutter may not be as hard for a team that needs some grit for a playoff run. Casey we just signed to an abysmal deal. He has regressed so much. That entire line just looks like they go through the motions and collect a paycheck.

Its time to significantly break up this group. It was a hell of a run but its over. If not for Sorokin this is a lottery team. Being 1 pt out of a WC is such a farse considering how bad we have played and the games other teams have in hand.

Nothing infuriates me more than seeing him on the ice in OT.

Having Lee in OT should get a coach fired. Blows my mind...

he's functional in the 1st two periods for goal scoring purposes but in close games down the stretch when leads must be protected no matter what, him and bailey should be on the bench
He's only functional when the other 4 players are working hard and making plays, so he can potentially pick up the scraps. Other than that, he's more or less useless. He's a better Moulson. That doesn't make him top line material, and certainly not worth 7mil...

Absolutely!......and really, I would like to see more of Fasching in OT....as well as the shootout...i also think Holstrom would do well in a shootout. Horvat, Parise and Fasching should be your three starters for a shootout, though have to admit, that attempt by Bo was, umm...pathetic.....but we'll give him one gimme.

Oh jeez...Are we really comparing the 22-23 Islanders to maybe the best team in the history of sports?

Bossy, Bourne, Gillies, Morrow, Nystrom, Potvin, Sutter, Tonelli, and Trottier were all 27 or younger in the 79-80 Season. The only noteworthy players on the current team 27 or under are Barzal, Horvat, Dobson, and Sorokin...With Lee, Nelson, Bailey, Martin, Cizikas, Mayfield, Pageau, Palmieri all being over 30. Plus the 79-80 team were coached by a top 5 coach in the history of the NHL in Al Arbour.

How many players on this team are going to have their jerseys hanging from the rafters - Much less be in the Hall of Fame?

The talent and coaching gap between the two teams is a Grand Canyon sized chasm, and they didn't have to deal with a salary cap. Also Bill Torrey >>>> Lou "here's my 1st for your average player" Lamoriello.

To look at the current New York Islanders and given the lack of elite talent, the holes on the roster, the lack of futures to trade, bottom 5 farm system, limited cap space, and poor coaching situation and not be notably concerned about this core's ability to win a Cup I think is an act in denial at best.

I think 3-5 years from now those of us who don't check their brains at the door and think Lou can do no wrong are going to look back at these years as wasted time where we didn't come close to a Cup because...It was actually Barry Trotz who was able to overcome this roster's deficiencies. Now that he's gone and the team is older, the roster, and thus Lou, are exposed. And many out there think because most of this roster "were 1 goal away from the finals just 3 years ago" that means that it's likely to happen again.

It isn't.

And the sooner we accept that major changes need to happen to get this team back on track, I'm very confident we're just slowly sinking into years of seasons just like this one - Nowhere near a Cup or a prospect like Bedard.

Patience can be a beautiful thing and I'm all for it...Just not when you have a bad coach behind the bench of the 2nd oldest team in the league.
Nothing says "patience is a beautiful thing and I'm all for it" like writing off a coach as "bad" 57 games into his head coaching career.

Last 7 games, the team has won 10 of possible 14 points. That's a 117 point pace over a season. But the wheels have fallen off and time for a rebuild.

And how bout the last 18 games? Or how bout the past 3 games? Or how bout the entire season? They are currently on pace for 87 points, and likely will need to finish with 95+ points to sniff the playoffs. Lets stop pretending all is well, unless you are happy to finish in 9-11 place.

Washington is currently on pace to finish with 90 points. As the WC2.

Fair point ....though I never hold what a player makes against him unless he's jaking it. Lee tries his best which at this stage of his career is certainly limited

Yes, but as per the point of the original post. If the majority of fans had their way… they would’ve dismantled BOTH teams.

Well...as i was there...as a fan...the talk was of whether to ride with the team they had or start a re-tool/rebuild. Two very disappointing results in back to back years.

If HF Boards were around then, this place would have melted down after the '78-'79 season.

They just don't understand and never will.

I mentioned this yesterday. The same fans calling for Lamoriello and Lambert's heads are the same fans who cried about how boring Trotz's system was, how they needed to open up the offense, and are now complaining the team isn't good enough defensively. The fans always know best because they always ignore when they were wrong.

Isles can still make it, this is true. But they really do not incite the same feeling of a team built for the playoffs… So that is concerning me.

The only historical context that I can think of where an Islander team played this poorly in the regular season, but turned it on in the playoffs would be the 93 Islanders.

I believe the Islanders gave the expansion Senators first and only road win. This was a couple of weeks before the playoffs.

I love you automatically assume that Lou was merely lucky to get Trotz and that without him it is a known fact that we would not have had ANY success. Fascinating. I also love how you simply "fast forward" through the three best seasons this team had in the last 30 years under Lou.

lol!
How often do you get a chance to sign a Stanley Cup champion coach just after they won the cup. I say ZERO chance of any becoming available ! Thus the word "fortunate" and yes Lou has to get credit but that's not to say that another GM would not have landed him as well. So basically Trotz is the reason the team had its best 3 years in the last 30 , Lou has since moved on from Trotz and hired another coach with similar results as the pre-Trotz coaches.

That's not true. Trotz had a single year where the Islanders were solidly in the playoffs, his first. Every other year they were battling for a wildcard spot.

--Capuano Era--
2012-13, 8th place.
2013-14, 14th place.
2014-15, 3rd place in the division, 3 points above the last playoff spot.
2015-16, 7th place.
2016-17, 9th place.
--Dead Weight Era--
2017-18, 11th place.
--Trotz Era--
2018-19, 2nd place in the division, just 5 points above the last playoff spot.
2019-20, 7th in the conference on win percentage.
2020-21, 4th place in their division (the last playoff spot).
2021-22, 9th place.
--Lambert Era--
2022-23 they're currently in 9th, a single point outside the last playoff spot.

The results have been the same for a long time during the regular season, even with Trotz. This has always been a bubble playoff team. The difference is that when they got into the playoffs with Trotz they had success, because his system is tailored for the playoffs. Lamoriello is also a defense first guy and fans hate it, even when he tries to get a bit more offense.

First of all, I was as rabid an Islander fan as there was at that time and I don't agree that there was a widespread call for the dismantling of the team among the fans. Did the NY papers and the Hockey News stir that pot, yes they did. But among the fans, that wasn't really the case.

As to my point, the hyperbole is justified this time. This team should be dismantled. Torn down to the studs or we are going to be a middle of the pack team, or worse, for as far as the eye can see. We cannot keep throwing resources into a sinking ship.

I’d say it’s not one or the other it’s when both of those happen and in what order. I’ll say #2 first then #1.
If Lambert goes before another trade… Does this mean you expect Lambert to be fired before the trade deadline? Or is this an offseason thing?

Again the original post, posited that if HFBoards (internet) was around during that time.

The point of the post was about the nature of fandom and specifically how aspects of it are magnified by social media.

As for hyperbole… by definition doesn’t actually serve any meaningful purpose. It’s just the over exaggeration of valid or invalid points.

If you want to tear the current team down, you could just say so. That will make your point well enough.

well, it's 8:05PM EST.....i'm hoping say around 9/9:30
Hmmm… that’s bold… means Lou is running the espresso machine after dark.
