I mean a less talented group (both on offense and defense) managed a 2.79 GF/G last year. But okay, sure.

What's your plan if the team isn't able to sign Johnny Hockey?
Miller is the perfect player for this team. Lou seems to feel that way too.
Center depth. Can move to wing to play with Barzal.
Could play center and move Nelson and his 37 goals to the wing.
He plays with passion.
Tough as nails.
Wins faceoffs.
Will cost picks and players but contract will probably still be around 2 million a year less than Johnny G.
Make it happen Lou.

If we add a Mikheyev or a Puljujarvi it should be adding to our mix of forwards not trading or replacing one...
You can't really add him without subtracting someone out for two reasons.

1 - He's going to cost at least $4M AAV on the UFA market, probably more. With Dobson, Romanov and a few other small pieces still left to sign, the maths just don't add up without sending someone out.

2 - Assuming the 4th line won't be changed, there's simply not enough forward spots for everyone under contract. One of Bailey/Parise/Wahlstrom/Beauvillier would need to sit, and that's in addition to someone like Bellows already sitting.

Not expecting a ton from this team as far as UFA season. For discussion purposes ONLY and for Sh*ts and Giggles.

Bailey, Varly, and Mayfield
For
Nylander, Kerfoot, and Holl

Reasoning- I was bored and was looking at Cap Friendly. Not sure if the talented winger is going to come by UFA but from someone who has term. Not sure Nylander will work with Barzal and is the right winger.

Love Mayfield and what he brings and don't think Lou will give up our quality goalie tandem.

Everyone is suggesting different players to sign but you do realize we need to move 2 forwards.
We currently have 14 forwards (including Bellows) So you bring in another, now we have 15....That's why Lou has to trade Bailey, I don't understand why he didn't move him during the draft. Unless Lou waives or convinces Martin to retire but that's not happening. Lou stated he still believes in this group. To me, that means we are standing pat again.

We do not have the cap space to sign Gaudreau. He is definitely going to get, if he leaves Calgary, 10-11M per. And even if we could, I believe he goes to Phily or NJ.

If you look at our current cap, we have 12M
- Dobson - 4.5M
-Romanov - 2M
-Bellows - 900K
-Salo - 800K

That around 8.2M - leaves us with under 4M.....

So if you want to improve the forwards, Bailey and Vary have to be on the chopping block. That's 10M in cap space, minus about 2M for a Goalie backup - 8M....now you are back up to 12M for a big FA signing.

14 forwards? I'm counting 13 forwards currently who should be on a NHL roster:

Barzal, Lee, Wahlstrom, Nelson, Beauvillier, Bailey, Pageau, Parise, Palmieri, Cizikas, Martin, Clutterbuck, Bellows

Barzal, Lee, Wahlstrom, Nelson, Beauvillier, Bailey, Pageau, Parise, Palmieri, Cizikas, Martin, Clutterbuck, Bellows, Johnston (Lou won't just waive him after giving him 1.1M for 4 years last year). He's your replacement for Martin and Cutter. So that's 14.

Ah yes, forgot that Johnston exists.

He needs a NHL roster spot, but he's more like a permanent #14 forward. Not someone who needs to be in the cemented in the lineup.

We have 13 forwards for 12 starting spots right now. Would be 14 for 12 starting spots if they sign a forward in UFA.

ok, Let's forget Johnston for now. If Lou doesn't move anyone and signs another forward, who's sitting?
You aren't sitting Brazal, Nelson, Lee , Pageau., Cizikas, Cutter. Parise and Parms are Lou's pets, That leave Bailey, Beau, Bellows and Wally. I thought with Lame coming in and Lou in the offseason mentioned that we had to develop and get more from our youngsters so to me, that means Wally, Bellows should be in the lineup. I would lump Beau in this conversation too. That leaves Bailey at the very least.

These are not my lineups just giving you an idea where are the open spots

Bellows, Brazal, Wally
Lee, Nelson, Beau
Parise, Pageau, Parms
Martin, Cizikas, Cutter
Bailey - Johnston - FA??

and just remember any FA we bring in. We will need more cap space.

Yeah, two of the following three will have to be traded if a forward is brought in via UFA:

Bellows
Bailey
Beauvillier

This is assuming that Johnston has that 14th spot on lockdown, which it seems like he does based on how much NYI management likes him.

Not impossible, all three have varying degrees of value and we could find trade partners for any of the three.

Let's see what he does when not playing in a Trotz system, not playing with the statistically worst defense in terms of being able to move the puck up ice, and not playing with underwhelming wings.

I've posted this before, but Greene and Chara were absolute anchors out there last year in terms of Corsi.
Yet, Barzal hasn’t improved his game under Trotz and the entire team did. All the deadwood wingers were removed, but Barzal disappeared in the first 20 games, played down to the ahl islanders, and kinda showed up later in the season. See, that’s not all on the defense and his wingers and the coach. That’s on him. With the amount of ice time he gets, including special teams, and well, his $7M tag, he certainly doesnt make the players around him better or produce with the man advantage.

Both 2 years Salo 800k aho 850k solid depth might be set on D I think Salo cheap option can grow his game on 3rd pairing maybe add one more cheap vet. Need the forward now.

What has Lou actually said?

He might look to make a hockey trade at forward. That makes me think of swapping one of our forwards for some other forward. Could be bad news for the anti-Anderson group. :sarcasm: We don't know that Lou is looking to UFAs. Who knows?

He said ideally they'd get both a defensive and offensive defenseman. Assuming we put Romanov in the "defensive" category, he might still be looking for an offensive defenseman. Does he mean someone like Leddy who can move the puck, or is he thinking more like Krug or Brannstrom? We'll see.

So with all the depth signings and with deals for Dobson and Romanov coming (let’s say bridge deals for three years at $4.5 million and $2.5 million, respectively), that will leave us with 23 players and with $2.5 million in cap space with Johnston and Koivula as extra forwards and Aho as the extra defender. Somthing definitely has to give if we want to make improvements, there is literally no way to make any substantial moves without moving at least one of Beau, Bailey, and/or Valrly.

So you're just trading Bellows this offseason?

I assume you're not going to let him get claimed for free via the waiver wire.

Whoa Lou- Either he has a shuffleboard tournament coming up or a Matlock marathon scheduled. This is like 2 months premature for these signings. Like the depth and it's about freaking time Bridgeport can start competing and have a good mix of vet and youth.

ok, my prediction...by the end of the day 07.13.....three team deal...we send 3-4 players/prospects and receive two players in return....i have no idea who and who and who, but hell, not my job, just basic speculation, lol......but to some degree, only way i see a hockey trade happening is with three teams involved.
