The issue with Lou’s signings haven’t been the signings on their own, it’s the fact that he’s given them to aging players or ones who aren’t important enough to warrant the signings. Marner is a different situation entirely. He’s only 28 and is an elite level player. Those are exactly the type of guys you should sign to large deals if you’re going to give deals like that out.
Are you interested in trading good assets and then giving this guy who has had issues with not performing in the playoffs, teammates calling him out, paying him between 12M-13M for 7-8 years? I'm not. maybe I'm in the minority.

Marner would be a good add if we didn't already have one of his player archetypes already in Barzal. I don't want to commit the kind of money he's going to command to another playmaker who's infamous for disappearing in the playoffs when we need a legit goal scorer in the worst way.

Difference is Barzal will not command 11 million plus and does not disappear in the playoffs

Have you watched the past two playoff series? Outside of Trotz, he’s trending Marner territory. A guy showing up when down 3-0 is not something to be admired, rather, should be questioned.

Brock Nelson was tied for 23 in the entire NHL for goals last year. Horvat had one less, and Palmieri had four less goals. How many teams had three 30 goal scorers this year? I just looked it up and the answer is four other teams (Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, and Vegas).

I think it's more than goal scoring, the team needs a player who can play a multitude of ways and is consistently helping to drive play even when they aren't scoring.

point a game this last series brother.
It’s funny, bc it was only a matter of time that someone brought this up. If you watched the actual games, he was irrelevant in games 1,2,3. Thus, the Isles were down 3-0. He needs to show up in game 1 and have an impact when there’s pressure to perform.

Down 3-0, those are charity points.

And how many goals did they each have against Carolina? Brock had 2 in 5 games. Horvat had one. Palmieri had one.

Brock Nelson will be 33 this season. Palmieri 34. Horvat 30 next April. Nelson was MIA large stretches in the 2nd half of the season. They're not getting younger, this is a problem they should be proactively looking for solutions for because I highly doubt that production is happening again.

One of the issues with the team is age and we're talking about adding Marchessault? I don't get it, and I'm a big fan of his game. He'd be a stopgap at best and this team needs more than that.
He led Vegas in scoring and would cost no assets. This team needs stopgaps, Jefferies/Maggio/Nelson/etc. are not surefire NHLers or ready.

The Islanders need to play faster, that doesn’t mean they need to get younger necessarily. They simply need players who are capable of playing in a system that plays at a higher pace.

funny, check out the rest of his teammates numbers. Considering they played a strong defensive team with a selke candidate drapped all over him the kid did alright. def was not irrelevant game one and potted a point in game 2. Last year came off that injury to suit up in the post season have a good summer. Keep doing what you're doing, love the passion

Lou is Guerin's protogé.

It's time we finally profit from that.

And if it's not Minnesota, gotta wonder if Trotz wouldn't be front and center in looking to acquire Nelson, should the hockey world hear/sense that he's available?

Gonna keep this in mind and hold you to it.

There are some considerable skating deficiencies to be seen in this young man.
Warrens skating is a strength of his, very smooth skater who plays a lot like Romanov. George is the guy to me though that is going to rise quickly, he can flat out fly. He has limited puck skills and offense but his skating and defensive awareness is going to have him playing in nhl for a long time. He really is Andy Greene type.

I agree that the Isles need to acquire free assets via UFA, then make the trades before or after. Even trade a 5th to negotiate.

I’m curious whether Vegas finds a way to pays Marchy by trading Karlsson - he restored his value with a 30/30 season with 3 years left on his deal.

The idea that he has issues performing in the playoffs is unfounded and comes from the Toronto media and fans looking for a scapegoat. He’s been the Leafs best scorer in the playoffs since this core has been together. His 0.89 PTS/G leads all three of Matthews (0.87 PTS/G), Nylander (0.79 PTS/G), and Tavares (0.65 PTS/G). The only reason why people have an issue with him is because they don’t want to go after the golden boys of Matthews and Tavares for not performing even though they’re reasons one and two on offense as to why Toronto fails in the playoffs.

It obviously depends on what we’d have to give up, but yes I would be perfectly fine with bringing in a 28 year old 100 point/30 goal scorer and then locking him up long term. Toronto is most likely not going to get nearly as much value back as they should and the team that gets Marner is going to get him for a steal. If the trade is like the idea a few have thrown around of something like Pulock or Pelech or Nelson + a 1st, then I think we would be insane not to pull the trigger. Buying low on elite talent when it becomes available seems to work out more often than not and I hope our management isn’t sharing the same fears that others will have and end up regretting it like them too.

They should try to keep Karlsson because he's actually their best center not named Eichel. Would be a very bad move.

I was responding to your post that the team needs more goal scorers. They had more than most teams in the NHL so it's not just about goal scoring when it comes to this roster. This team needs more than players who score goals.

I agree completely about proactively looking for solutions and I'm not suggesting we bring all three back.

Marchessault will make the same money on his new deal that Nelson is making and he's a year older. He'll be going from a stacked Vegas team to a team where he'd be relied upon more heavily. A signing like that seems ripe for disaster.

Again, I love the player, he's just not the right fit for this team. It's okay if the Islanders miss playoff next year after selling off pieces and not immediately replacing them. They should go for younger stopgaps than Marchessault.

How would it look if he came out and said, ‘you know what, it’s time to move from my hometown, I’m not performing at my $11M salary, I’ve instructed Toronto mgmt to trade me?’
I’m predicting Marner signs a new deal July 1. JT will be the player the Leafs let walk in a year.

Leafs should rid themselves of JT now if they could. I don’t see much of a demand though at 11m. Maybe leaves can move JT with 50% salary retained.

He has an NMC, he has all the power. Even if he was interested in leaving, there is no way his wife will let him do it. Remember how much Dubas thanked her when the snake signed in Toronto? She clearly wears the pants while he walks around his pool all night.
