If Shane Pinto were available, and there were evidence that he's checking out wrt to character, etc. then he would be a very valuable asset. Best comparison imo would be a young Ryan O'Reilly but with a little bit less of a track record (because of the suspension). imo if he were considered pretty clean from a character pov, everyone would be in on him. And if there are unknowns there, NYI don't even consider him.
If I were the Senators & NYI approached, I'd want a very good young player in return that addresses a weakness. So, Romanov to start.
Romanov makes sense from an “approaching value” perspective but most would argue that all three of their LD are better than him - they are going to need to move one before the trade deadline next season. We don’t have another player close to him in value, which is why I was openly pontificating about a Tkachuk + Pinto for Dobson deal that people here (understandably) were not too excited about.
Pinto has had a weird start to his career because of the gambling suspension and the injury in what was supposed to be his rookie year - even so he’a playing at a 70 point pace on a bad team in his sophomore season. I think it’s fair to question if him being available means there are character issues - just can’t see Lou being interested if there are.
He’s probably their fourth most valuable
player behind Stutzle, Tkachuk, and Sanderson. Those 4 +Norris, Batherson and Chychrun are all under 25. Doesn’t sound like a core you want to starting messing with when you’re in last and you’re in a B market.
I think the closest comparison I could make to them trading pinto now would be us trading Dobson last season. Young player playing well at an important position with room to grow. Why would we ever do that?
