what would a ep40 to carolina look like. gotta think jasperi Kotkaniemi is included in a deal. what prospect would the canes be willing to part with + a draft pick likely 1st? or 2nd..
More like how much of that obscene salary that only produces 50 points a year are you willing to retain.

Most of us want NOTHING to do with EP at the contract you guys gave him. I do NOT want anything to do with that burr filled saddle until like 30 or 31 or however long that prison sentence is. Most of our 50 point guys make 5-6 mil not double that.

This is just a homer take man. No way the canes give KK plus picks plus prospect for a dude that has a contract worse than Nurse. Hes paid as a 100 point guy and producing half that. We can buy KK out for nothing.

I have to assume this is with like 50% retention where he definitely would have value. Without retention it's probably KK + minor pick/prospect at best bc that contract is an anchor with tons of risk. You're just not getting anything of value back without hefty retention

If the front office thinks they could rehab Pettersson, outside of the cap hit, acquiring him makes a ton of sense. With Staal only having 1 more year and Kotkaniemi not living up even to being the 3C heir apparent, they’re going to need another defensively responsible pivot sooner rather than later. Pettersson is only 27. He’s declined a whole bunch since hitting 100pts and getting that contract , but I think he’s got a lot more to give in the right environment, which may be in Carolina.

Problem is, cap and what do they want to do with Nikishin and maybe Andersen too. Assuming Kotkaniemi’s $4.8M is gone via trade or buyout, that’s $15-16M. Taking EP40 at full cap, which I think would be the case, don’t see any retention, leaves only $4-5M for Nikishin and no wiggle room.

I’ve always thought Nikishin was getting a bridge not and 8yr deal, but after the Jankowski extension, taking up another ~ $2M in cap, I think taking on Pettersson just isn’t realistic any more, especially if they’re keen on keeping the D in tact.

I mean who do we sacrifice for EP? The answer after winning a cup with this team is no one. Sign Nikishin, then work with whatever cap you have after trading or buying out KK.
Yea, even at 50% retention I'm not sure there's anyone on the roster I would be willing to swap for him (15G-50PT C the last 2 seasons)...and 50% (or nearly) is the only retention that would make him worth the flyer

It aint nadeau, CAL, or nystom, I can tell you that. The only peice I would dump is KK, but I am not tulsky either.
Its just that contract is so f***ing abysmal.

There is enough smoke that the org thinks EP would work here.

I would think the price would be low KK+Non Nadeau prospect +pick. Even if there is some retention to bring him down to 9.5 or so.

Where he slots into the lineup… we haven’t seen the butchers bill for the season yet, but id expect more than a couple off season surgeries

People seem to think KK is an automatic buyout now that the buyout window is open but I don’t see it but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s traded in the next couple of weeks

I agree. The center market is godawful, and unlike basically every potential name that's actually available, KK is young.

He'd at least garner KK+ FUS + Dallas' 2028 1st. That's sort of my framework. Centers hold a lot of trade value even if they're reclamation projects.
Nah...that's well over paid. Keep your powder dry until a real producing guy is available

IMO, down the road, Canes should be looking for a big/fast winger to replace Hall, a RD and at some point next year go for another C

KK on the canes at this point is dead cap. if bought out would be due a total of 6.8 million over then next 8 years. If not 20.4 million over the next 4 years. I would guess he’d get about a 2x2 on the market as a UFA

I think he is movable but with slight negative value or as part of a distressed asset for distressed asset deal.

If he goes in an EP deal he effectively would lower the net cap hit of EP by like .75 to 1.25 million depending on how you value cap hit multiple years in the future.

The good thing is we have a GM who has a analytical framework in place to make these kind of predictions and decisions

There was a time when you could argue for the Pettersson gamble here. We no longer need the risky home run move to win the Cup. I think it only makes sense if Vancouver takes the risk down to a level that isn't realistic, like almost max retention and small acquisition cost. I don't see it happening.

I doubt Koko gets bought out, but he probably does get traded. Not sure if that's going to be for a pick, a bad contract swap, or as an add in to a deal for salary purposes.

All signs point to Hischier staying in NJ, so that seems like something not worth dreaming on unless something changes.

Just a thought…

Huge IF…

IFFFFFFfFfF, a current roster player had to be moved along with Kotkaniemi (not in the same transaction), it might be Chatfield. He’s only got 1yr left on his deal, he’s a righty, coming off a real good playoffs and just turned 30. He’s going to command a significant raise next summer. His value likely will never be higher.

Theoretically, they could shed Chatfield and his $3.1M for high end futures, replace with Legault/Nystrom and actually have the space for a Nikisbib long term deal plus a reclamation project like EP40.

Not that I think that is at all likely, just what I think would be a potential way to make the $$$ work while also backfilling Chatfield’s spot proactively and also getting some futures.

I said this a few weeks ago about Chatfield. He’s due a raise after this contract deservedly so but if the canes aren’t gonna do it then his value is at all time high now where every other team watched him play well in the playoffs that if you wanted to sell high on him now would be the time to do it
