Basically the equivalent of about a second for Kesselring. Price seems low but he does need a new contract, so have to see where that lands.
Even less tbh

20 = 4.0
27 = 3.2 + ~1.0 usually as the “overpayment” that naturally occurs in a trade up so an early 3rd.

Even if it doesn’t pan out and they don’t want to re-sign him, given the cap space teams will have next year, hard to imagine they wouldn’t be able to recoup that value.

Wonder if they’ll just try and re-sign him now with his value at a low.

Not sure adding a 26 year old Kesselring really addresses their ongoing need for better young D that project as top pair guy.
It helps their near term situation, doesn’t it?

If they have Stenberg BPA, it 100% makes it easier to take him or feel better about moving down to 4 and squeezing more value to take that D. Point is, they have options and this was a very good move

seems like a weird move for buffalo. the draft is pretty wide open at that stage, who's to say the player they want at 20 wouldn't have been there at 27?

they've got some cap issues with benson and krebs needing new deals and presumably want to try and re-sign tuch

plus kesselring played in 1 playoff game, ruff didn't seem to trust him. weird because he looked decent in utah the year prior.

Teddy Blueger
  • Very quiet; no urgency to re-sign him
  • Old regime wanted him back “big time”
  • Wonders if the Canucks are looking for a bigger centre in the bottom-six

This feels again like the Douglas reports.

Any C who is as good as Blueger but big will have 20 teams chasing them. They won't be signing for a 32nd place team in the middle of a rebuild.

Sign the guys you have if they want to be here, FFS.

Eh, I think people are overrating Kesselring's 24/25 season in retrospect. Looking at the data, he played some of the most sheltered minutes in Utah out of their regular defenders. He was fine in those minutes, but worse than all the other regular top 4 guys.

He's a fine 4/5 guy who can serve as a good complimentary player, but not someone who can anchor a pairing or a guy you want out against top tier competition. The main issue is SJ needs guys who can legitimately anchor pairs right now.

It's a fair trade for both sides.

Kesselring was a healthy scratch and like 8th or 9th on Ruffs depth chart. I dont see this as being a top pairing move for the Sharks at this point. Buffalo needed to move out salary to resign a few guys.

all I want for my upcoming 40th birthday and all of my upcoming christmases is #40 out the door before puck drop on next season. if they could get it done early, like before free agency, so I don't have to think about him anymore, that would truly be the icing on the cake.

Yep. This is Colin Miller redux.

kesselring was unplayable for buffalo. like one of the worst defenders in the nhl in sheltered minutes. he did have some injury problems but i don't really like this trade much for san jose. dropping seven spots isn't a big deal and kesselring could be serviceable but i feel like they probably could have found a better deal if they were willing to drop a few more spots

Yeah, I've been someone who has been a big Kesselring pusher dating from his time in the AHL in Edmonton's system but he's kind of hit his ceiling as a 5D and wasn't in Buffalo's top 6 guys for the playoffs. This is pretty good value for him given the circumstances.

Keeping him is a no-win game. Either his value continues to decline or if he miraculously returns to form he'd be sabotaging our draft position in a tanking season. It's good to hear some chatter around this as he needs to go, full stop.

He wasnt in their top 8 even. They were playing Logan Stanley, Conor Timmins, Luke Schenn and Zach Metsa ahead of him.

I watched Kesselring for most of the four years he spent in the AHL playing in the Oilers system for Bakersfield and then for Tucson. He had a bit of a breakout season two years ago with 7 goals and 22 assists playing with Utah.....but was still deemed expendable in the J.J. Peterka trade with Buffalo.

The best that can be said for him is that he's 6'5" and 215, and is a relatively rare right shot d-man.

But if the Sharks believe his acquisition means they can pass on Reid or any of the other d-men in the upper echelons of this draft--they could be in for a dramatic letdown.
