FWIW: ultimately, the Canes had a bunch of smarts plus luck in the Necas deal.

Would have been Good: Necas for Demidov
Would have been a really bad: Necas for EP (by holding onto the asset, JR has hurt the franchise)
Turned out to be a Great: (I think I got this one right): Necas/Drury/Morrow/1st/2nd for Stankoven, Miller, Budget for Ehlers, Hall, Dallas 1st, (along with budget for Stankoven and Blake)

I said this a few weeks ago about Chatfield. He’s due a raise after this contract deservedly so but if the canes aren’t gonna do it then his value is at all time high now where every other team watched him play well in the playoffs that if you wanted to sell high on him now would be the time to do it

I agree. The center market is godawful, and unlike basically every potential name that's actually available, KK is young.

See here's where we're in agreement, I think KK (due to the center market) still holds value to the point that a guy like FUS+1st would make any trade a pretty bad overpayment

The challenge is that no one is giving Carolina value for Kotkaniemi while the buyout window is open. They expect the Canes to buy him out.

So is it better to buy him out? Or better to trade him after? (Btw, capwages has Kotkaniemi with a M-NTC but no mention of the number of teams.)

I think it's time to accept the buyout and the cap space.

Their cap situation is too good to get played. Carolina has the upper hand for this reason.

I really don’t think they are expecting to get good value or he would have been traded already.

They had to keep KK for this run. Suzuki, Brind'Amour were only realistic backup options.

Win-win: KK gets a ring, a bonus payout, his name on the cup.

WIth some level of retention it would probably be something like KK and Cerrato + a pick depending on the retention for EP40. KK gives them a center now who maybe also does something in a new environment and Cerrato gives them a center for the future. With Aho, Stank, EP40, Staal, Jankowski and a post Staal of Aho, Stank, EP40 a guy like Cerrato probably doesn't have a place on the roster moving forward.

The EP40 connection seems more like a recycled rumor from the previous two seasons rather than a current state of strong interest from the Canes.

I’m sure they would still take him at a certain price (as they would with almost any player), but the required retention and acquisition costs have likely shifted to the point where there isn’t a realistic deal anymore for either side.

Re: KK I agree with others that a trade is probably more likely than a buyout, but one or the other will happen before the buyout window closes. We know they had offers on the table throughout the past year that they’ve declined for center depth reasons. I don’t think they would’ve have passed on those opportunities if they weren’t confident they could still move him before July 1, or worst case weren’t comfortable with the cheap buyout.

For what it's worth, KK is apparently an "emotional support Finn" for Aho and one of Jarvis' best buddies on the team. I don't know how much value that has, but I do know that there was a while after we let TT go that Aho was in a "funk"

While I don’t think it’s likely, I think Kotkaniemi still has it in him to be a very good 3C. He still could be the eventual Staal replacement.

I think the chances of that are next to zero at this point, but I also think that he acually is an NHL center, just not here.

I'm sure that's true, and it matters to an extent, but aside from the normal BS of everyone understands it's a business, I'm sure Aho and Jarvy would like their buddy to be in a place that actually wants him and where he gets to play a big role. That does not appear to be in the cards here anytime soon.

TBF, Ehlers was a recycled rumor here for many years, and it eventually came true. EP40, even with Stankoven now locking down 2C for the foreseeable future, makes a lot of sense for us just in terms of adding more forward depth.

Ehlers rumors were more consistently specific, both the summer before in a potential Necas deal and in the lead up to UFA last year where we were consistently linked as the most likely destination.

Regardless, very different circumstances. Ehlers never saw his production hit a cliff and he became available as a UFA. Pettersson’s 100 point season is increasingly looking like an aberration rather than the standard they gave him $11.6m a year to maintain.

I get it, and in the past I was more willing to take the risk. But now I think it’s far less likely Vancouver retains enough money to make the move worth it without requiring more valuable pieces, defeating the purpose of buying low on a distressed asset.
