Is Andrew Shaw a good hockey player anymore? Feel like we should be adding bottom 6 vets UFA with real playoff experience like that that will cost nothing

I was mildly excited about the trend in 2017 to draft more Euros and going deeper into the Russians but by the end of the rebuild, I'm fully onboard with the old all American program with a few Swedes and a few Canadians sprinkled in there.

While this seems like a bit of a joke, I think there is a little truth to it. But I think it is more this team needs to start drafting more CHL and NCAA bound players. As good as some Europeans are, major juniors and college leagues still produce the most NHL players, and until that changes, the Rangers really need to draft them more often.

I'm actually kind of afraid to trade Nils, although I guess he's the odd man out. Still, an impressive junior career, ntm him winning the Borje Salming trophy as a kid playing in a man's league. At 21 years of age, he's got an extremely long road ahead of him. Yes Schneider is the better player as of right now, but who knows, Nils has plenty of time to continue and adapt to NA. He just needs to keep playing, and keep learning. With many young up and coming center men out there, there's no doubt the Rangers have the pool of young guns to get one. I'm guessing by the trade dead line, or during the Summer, something will get done.

Nils is mostly a victim of bad timing, not that he’s going to be a bad player.
Production wise, it wouldn’t surprise me if he puts up more pts then schneider, the problem is with fox signed we need the rest of what Schneider bring to his game in the top 4 if we’re going to trade trouba.... plus Scheider isn’t incompetent on offense either...
If you don’t trade nils, you still have 1 of him or Schneider on 3rd pair long term, and that’s not a spot where your getting the most out of either player...
Fox taking all the 1PP time and Schneider replacing trouba is the 2 biggest reasons for moving Lundkvist. Miller can run PP2, our PP2 is insignificant, it gets almost no time.
What I don’t want to do is trade Lundkvist for a rental.... he should go in a package in drurys big trade over the summer/draft for a long term cost controlled fwd/center to replace strome.

I’d then keep Jones. He can play LD/Rd and should be fine getting 3rd pair minutes with a solid partner.

You can’t just stash the guy in the A for too long. It’s already been stated he’d welcome a move, and that is only going to increase if he thinks he’s spending another full season in Hartford.

3rd pair D is pretty easy to fill with the amount of prospects we have, and cheap guys we can sign.
You have to maximize your assets the best was possible.
Nils getting 10-12 min on 3rd pair and 20-30 seconds of 2 PP time ain’t it....
We’re also going to keep drafting defensemen. Nils main problem was fox signing for 7 seasons, trouba already here and Schneider being more physically ready, happening all at the same time.

could keep Nils and even let him play a year in Sweden if he wants. Then Trade Trouba in that offseason to create cap space

Fox , Schneider, Lundkvist

Another possibility, and just out of curiosity, while people are talking about how badly we need more Center man prospects, I wonder who Fox could have brought back, before he signed his big deal. Either alone, or in a package. Especially after winning the Norris, and his numbers speak for themselves. Again, this is only curiosity, however, I'm sure multiple teams called to ask Drury about him. I would have liked to have listened in. Unless Drury sent out a memo to all teams stating "don't ask." I doubt that though, I don't think G.M.'s do that.

This is the same thing as all those stupid Kings offers for their centers. Teams don’t trade prospect centers for other prospects like this. Dallas doesn’t even consider this. If they were going to cash in on Johnson (they aren’t) they need to get an all star caliber player back.
Well, I can't think of many off hand, just the Reinhart/Barzal trade I suppose. As of now, I believe Johnson is their number one center prospect, so yea he's gonna be tough to get. But I think it depends on timing also, that's why I was wondering as a hypothetical, which center (if any) say, the Kings would deal for Fox, if Fox was actually available, and they were in need of a quarterback on the pp, or just a really terrific young d man in general.

Fox is obviously much more than a top 2-4 D prospect by now, so I'll go back to just before his career in the NHL began to make it more even.

What has Laf or Kakko done, on the ice as a Ranger, to deserve to be “untouchable” ?

Especially Kakko who is in line for an undeserved raise?
The game requires offense and defense from both forwards and Dmen. Are you going to say that Kakko hasn't contributed to the team winning with his stellar defensive play? Everyone loves Jack Hughes. I say he's a net negative; Devils have done pretty well without him eating up all the ice time with his giveways. Yet, you would probably say he's untouchable for the Devils, right?

Nils is still adjusting. If we move him now, we will regret it because we have managed to lower his value and he is gonna be a player.

Feel like if MSL is a disaster, that’s fine and they don’t have to commit. Comparing it to Messier taking over a team that was ready to play as a Cup contender seems dumb.
Agree that Montreal’s needs aren’t what ours were at the time. Obviously, we didn’t win it, so…

I think theres more of a background issue with nemeth. He haant been himself this season and his play has taken a nosedive compared to his other seasons. If we keep him., we just hope hes good next year I guess.
Avs fans say he's never good for any stretch. This was a bad signing that we should try and move him and his contract if we can.

Get me This (all these names have been affiliated with Rangers interest):

Kreider - Zib - R. Smith
Bread - Strome - Lehkonen/Goodrow
LAF - McCann - Kakko
Goodrow/Lehkonen - Rooney - Carpenter
Reaves, Hunt

Lindgren - Fox
Miller - Trouba
Soucy or Leddy or C Miller - Schneider
Jones

Czar
Koskenkorva

…and Turk Will be a Happy man
And what are you giving up to get this lineup that will lose in the first round of the playoffs? Our entire future?

If the argument is Kakko’s defense then it certainly isn’t much. I could be wrong but I don’t believe that his defense is as good as it was last year either - as an aside I’m certainly on the record saying that I would have tried to sign Danault to pair with Kakko and make a true shutdown line but that’s out the window now.

But anyway if you are saying that his primary value is defense and/or he enables other people to do stuff, that shows that he is replaceable. On a line with Strome and Panarin, there is not a ton of difference between Kakko, Fast, Blackwell, etc there. I’m not saying that Kakko is bad. I’m saying he doesn’t deserve his RFA raise and that he shouldn’t be untouchable. Rangers can get easily get players in to do the role that Kakko is doing.

What you cannot do is easily get players that do what Jack Hughes does. Hughes has his faults but it’s ridiculous to suggest he isn’t a building block, or that he is a “net negative”. The Devils need to surround Hughes with the right players to cover up some of his deficiencies but the Hughes vs Kakko debate is over and the Rangers are the losers. I don’t even think I need to go into any more detail on this.

It would be a huge help if he found his game
What exactly is his game? I am at the point and to coin a phrase fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I just don't see the potential to put him in a meaningful role. I also think neither does the team management including the coach.

Schneider is the only player in that group that should be untouchable
I don’t know- Laf has great potential I think. You watch. He goes elsewhere and BOOM he’s on fire and we look like buffoons. Play him until he succeeds or we completely run him into the ground. BAHAHA

But what has Lafreniere shown on the ice, as a Ranger, to deserve being untouchable? It’s clear that he needs to find a way to keep himself in top six, but if he does there probably is no room for Kakko in top six either. I think the Rangers will have to pick one of the other honestly, and Lafreniere at least has an extra RFA year which buys more time to figure it out.
