That's what's paid to Lundqvist (on the base salary, not the cap hit), but the calculation for the cap hit is more complicated.

around the net, this is what I got

“A buyout is pretty simple – he would be $5.5 million on the books next season and then $1.5 million the season after.”

I mean, has this ever happened? Kreider is a smart dude and kind of odd, maybe he’d be cool with doing the team a solid, but I feel like it’s a bigger solid than people realize. You’re asking him to temporarily move, fit in with a new team with new people, and then compete during the grind of the playoffs (which he won’t get paid for,) just to get the team a draft pick.
To be fair - at the time, it was insane for Shattenkirk to agree to four years. But it happened.

Colorado has very little money coming of the books and Burakovsky and Zadorov will get raises. Jost is a RFA. After next season Landeskog is a UFA and Makar a RFA.

I wonder if they feel that they have the cap space to take on someone like Kreider long-term and/or Hank for another year.

Jost isn’t going to break the bank. He’s got 5 goals in like 54 games this season, Ouch!

If Kreider said to his agent, "I'm thinking of going short term to be a team player for the rangers", exhibit A from the agent is Shattenkirk and why that is out of the question. Kreider can make his choice, but that loyalty might not be a 2 way street. Shattenkirk could have gotten another 3 years at $6.5m. I doubt he makes that up in the rest of playing days.

My intention isn't to be preachy, and you found an example when requested during a conversation. I'm just working through it in my head. CK had a front row seat to business in the NHL.

Trade with retention >>>>> buy out. Cap savings + asset(s) + you know not having to buy out arguably the best goalie to ever put on a Rangers sweater.

From Hanks image POV, retirement > buy-out. If Hank retires after the signing bonus is paid — how much money does he loses vs a buy-out? He just gets 2/3 of 4.5m with a buyout right. So it’s 1.5m vs 3m.

I'm not contract law specialist but he would have to pay that $1MM bonus back if he retired after receiving on July 1st or that $1MM would count against the cap if the Rangers chose to let him keep it.

I believe his actual salary is $4.5MM next year so he'd be walking away from $3.5MM.
