Also, regarding Eichel..... someone in the last thread said "What would Aho or Barzal have done on Buffalo the past 6 years?" in regard to comparison with Eichel.
And I actually do believe if Barzal or Aho had been on the Sabres for the last 6 years, they might have at least had 1 playoff appearance, which they didn't have with Eichel.
Again, it's not that Eichel isn't fabulously skilled or that he doesn't put up PPG or more stats. He would qualify for both of those things.
But what I haven't seen from him is the drive to win, to sacrifice his game and offensive stats, if necessary for a win. Which I believe, just using my eyes, is something both Barzal and Aho do for their respective teams. And part of the reason why their teams do so well, aside from being talented teams. Well, in the case of Barzal, it might not be so much talent as chemistry and good coaching, but either way.
I still stick to my Tavares comparison for Eichel. Great talents, great stats, great fantasy players, but questionable drive and ability to carry a team towards a playoff spot in the NHL, And unless a player can do that, I am not sure if the Rangers need them. We have enough pure talent as is. We need to find chemistry and the drive to win games. So I don't see it being a wise option to a) trade possible future, star prospects and b) Pay top dollar in salary, against the cap for a center that doesn't bring those winning qualities.
I could be wrong about Eichel. But I don't think he's proven me wrong YET. Tavares on the other hand, has shown time and time he's just not the type of player to push or carry a team on his back. And I wouldn't want to pay like 8-11 mil a season for Tavares either. What we really need on this team now is a John Toews type of player, not necessarily a guy who can put up 90 points a season, but a guy who will do his best to make his teammates better and do his best to get the win. And that could come in a less spectacular, less prolific scoring type of center. Which shouldn't cost us as much in a trade or against the cap. People mentioned Larkin, and maybe he could be that guy. But if I had to pick the ideal center I think we need right now, it would probably be Bo Horvat. A player I would absolutely love to get. But likely zero chance the Canucks would trade him for anything reasonable. Schenn might be another one.
