No, no signings can be done during the freeze. Protected players or not. Only deals you can do are with Seattle.
Protect an UFA, you hold his rights until 28th. Don't protect him, Seattle has the window to sign him now before the draft.Isn't he exempt because he's a UFA?
Protecting Blackwell is dumb IMO. Does he really have a role here? I’d honestly protect Rooney over him. Blackwell has skill but I don’t think he can really be part of the equation on a winning team. He’s so weak on the puck and gets knocked down and off the puck non stop. It’s not even a size thing, MSL and Zucc are smaller and were more solid on their feet and on the puck and winning battles than anyone. He has some skill but do we need more skill? We already have a plethora of skill forwards. I don’t see Blackwell succeeding in the bottom 6 long term, certainly not in the playoffs. He’s like a tweener. He’s not strong or solid enough of a grinder to be a bottom sixer and he’s not good enough to be in the top 6 despite being a skill guy. I know he scored a bunch last year and that’s great, but I really don’t see a place for him on next years team if we’re gonna be any good, let alone in the future.
I actually think the ladd deal helps lou make a run at parise + suter, i'd hate that, but I think thats exactly whats gonna happen.
He probably is. I can’t see Seattle touching Quick.I thought I read that Driedger was pretty much Seattle's goalie.
Agreed. I know protecting him doesn’t really mean much but I’d protect Rooney and Gauthier over him. Rooney I could see as 4C next year and Gauthier at least is young with potential and hasn’t really gotten much of a look. Blackwell to me is a career AHL/NHL tweener. Him playing in the top 6 and scoring some goals says more to me about how bad we were and Quinn was as a coach than it does about Blackwell. Good guy and all I just don’t see a guy like him having a role.I think Barron or Goodrow (obviously) should be Blackwell's replacement, I dont see why they would protect Blackwell. Yes he's cheap so that could play a role but he's also a pending UFA after this season.
Yes, it’s all happening. Some may not like what we’re gonna pay Goodrow but he’s going to be an important bottom 6 guy for us. He’s going to help Barron develop immensely if the goal is to keep him at center. Having a guy that could step in a win a defensive zone draw, and get other players to play with more passion when he’s on the ice is a great add.Vince says its likely the Rangers are going to sign Goodrow from what he's hearing
Can help Chytil as well with faceoffs. In practice and for important draws if on the same line.Yes, it’s all happening. Great job Drury. Howden out too, now go get Crouse and Dvorak and go to war
the howden for a 4th was in 'the '22 draft.Very happy with today’s moves. And Drury has impressed me. Hired the right coach, added Goodrow for a likely solid contract with toughness/FOs/defensive game. And hell he even added a 4th in a draft that wasn’t able to be scouted well so there’s a higher chance we can find a diamond in the rough. Also, like others have mentioned he held his cards very close to the chest. He seems deliberate, shrewd, and has a vision.
Next up is seeing how he handles the cap, if he negotiate good contracts, and if he can draft as well as Gorton.
No. Glen Sather is defacto AGM as he's helping Drury in an advisory role this offseason. Dolan will do his due diligence and make his hires after the draft. Is anyone at least a little concerned/find it odd that we’re a week away from the meat of the off-season…and we still don’t have an assistant GM OR AHL GM?

Have you heard anything on the progress of these open roles?
