Roster Building Thread VI (2022-23): Offseason edition

It's tricky. Lindgren seems like a great locker room guy, and the team looks different on the ice when he's not in the lineup. He's the guy who should be a career Ranger at the right price. Seems to always play every shift to the max and helps set the tone. It's almost what we would need more of throughout the lineup.

If they feel like he's going to go the Girardi/Staal/Callahan route and just build up an impressive list of injuries, they might put as many miles on him as possible and move him to maximize value.

It's a case where the business side is likely going to dictate the outcome.
He's just a black hole offensively.

Between Honka and Nils Dallas must have been frustrated with the small puck movers lately.
The Rangers wanted Honka for Talbot in 2015. Nils has another season remaining on his ELC. Hopefully, the Stars give him more than 60 games next season. Nils needs 39 more points for 55 points and the Rangers get a 3rd instead of a 4th round pick.

I’m sure I’m in the minority here but we should trade Miller, he regressed this year and will be too expensive and makes too many mental errors.
Get a boring stay at home guy.

Build a shutdown line and play matchups like grownup coaches do.

Options are limited, you need to get creative or think outside the box.

We need a mobile puck moving defenseman, now. Not in 3 years.

I wanted Chychrun. We got Kane, Tarasenko and Mikkola instead.
Thats why imo we should trade lindgren and sign gostisbehere for something like 4.5AAV.

Kandre-fox
Gostisbehere-trouba
Jones-schneider

Or could keep lindy and move kandre for picks

Would Arizona trade #12 for kandre? Its pretty obvious columbus would trade #22 for kandre. But how many 6’5 225 good skating dmen are out there who just posted 43 points with no PP time. I’d need something closer to top 10 to move kandre for picks.

Been watching alot of wolfpack recently. Jones is a really good puck mover, he is a little small but I think with his abilities to move the puck he should be our 6D

Do people really think Drury made Trouba captain to move him so quickly?

I think he’s here for the duration of that deal
Hes gone after next season. He kinda has to be moved, we dont really have a choice.

What does the org view with Lindgren future? Is he getting signed past this coming season?

Is giving up Goodrow and Lindgren worth the cost for Orlov? Consider Lindgren would also net us a valuable return.

Orlov Fox. Get some futures back from Lindgren?

Would you?
If we move lindgren it should be to sign gostisbehere.

How did he regress? Evidence not the eye test please.

His offensive stats went up. He carried an injured and sloth speed Trouba. He got PP time.

I don't want to hear a "yeah, but...." argument.

Yeah but he had a bad series against the Devils.

Yeah but he made one glaring bad turnover at an inopportune time once every few games.

Yeah but he.....ummm....had the spitting thing with Doughty.

I still say there is zero chance he is traded. Trading him would be the biggest mistake since Neil Smith traded Norstrom in 1996

He's not going to be too expensive. Bridge deal at worst and by the time he's due for his big raise, Trouba, Panarin, and Kredier will all be on the way out or gone, the cap will go up, and he will be at his physical peak.

I'm all for changing the mix on the left side of defense, but bringing in Ghost Bear and Jones into the fold would be a huge overcorrection. They're essentially the same player. That would be the softest defense in the league if you subtract Lindgren on top of it. FWIW, I'm also an advocate for trading Lindgren if the price is right, but the Rangers would need to do it to make the defensive core more balanced and adept at moving the puck.

Orlov Fox
KAM Trouba - Hoping Trouba just had a bad 'off' year
Jones Schneider

is a strong top4.

They just need to do one or the other.

I have hopes that who ever they bring in will make the types of changes that will make the other players adequate enough. It's got to be more "unit of 5" up the ice than the 15+ foot passes. I have faith that we'll see most of the D do better with their break outs if thats the case.

None of the above was the correct thing to do. Should have went after grit for the bottom lines and Kulikov for the bottom pair.

Trouba has been here 4 seasons and he's had exactly one where his play matched his cap hit.
I think even that’s being generous.

I like Orlov but I don't think thats a good allocation of those dollars. He's 31.

I'd rather just keep things as they are and roll with Jones. The bigger holes are upfront anyway.
It’s a fair concern but I think the front can be fixed with a few shrewd moves.

I think teamwork and coaching can go a long way with what we already have. Adding a couple strong forecheckers can change the dynamic even further.

It’s Ghost or Jones imo. Not both

We need a near league minimum on bottom pair. Harpur is #7.

So I guess the thought would be left side being something like

Lindy
Kandre
Jones

Or

- One of lindy/kandre (assume other gets moved if gostisbehere is brought in)
- gostisbehere
-robertson (he impressed me in hartford this year and is of the more physical mold)

Trouba has been here 4 seasons and he's had exactly one where his play matched his cap hit.
I called it here when Winnipeg made the WCF is 2018. He was a #2 then and is a #3-4 now. The league sped up and he got slower.

Does he have a core-related injury? His speed, shot, and puck control (him on PP2 is not good) have all exponentially deteriorated since the beginning of the 2019 season when he was on the PP and shooting nearly 100 MPH slappers.

Seriously can someone explain it scientifically? What happened to this guy (he's not even old and yes you can make jokes he got married lol).

Trouba is my pick for #1 problem on the roster but at the same time I highly doubt the NYR front office even considers him to be a problem.
I think that’s exactly right. To take it a step further, the organizational (defensive) posture is that not only is he “not a problem” but he’s an actual solution (pointing to a few open ice hits as the justification).

If this were 1997, I think Trouba is a really nice player facing off against Derian and Kevin Hatcher. New York City? Probably not the fit. It’s been an unnatural, forced fit from the jump.

This is Glen Sather shit.

He's going to be awfully easy to move when the time comes though.

Trouba/Lindgren are guys who are overvalued by teams. No joke, we could probably build something around Lindgren for Nylander and that shouldn't be possible but this is the league we watch (Lindgren is a good player, but hes a 3-4 at best.)

Panarin is still my #1 problem with this team. This is a guy who is getting paid "carry the franchise on his back" money who can't carry anything when its mattered. Trouba's contract sucks, but he's not the 2nd highest paid player in the league.

That would be the LD equivalent of the Pionk, DeAngelo, and Shattenkirk RD we ran a few years ago.

I watch Florida and I covet Bennett and Tkachuk. Physical and they get to the net...it's just...what we're not. Who's the last guy we've had like that?

Blueger is a guy that would be good to bring in for a 4th line role if the price is right. Can skate well and can chip in points.
