Because dead cap is a total waste. Yes you get 2 years of credit but then 6 of dead cap. Late 2nd round picks traditionally are lucky to even make the nhl as a 4th liner
I understand but we have given up a ton of draft picks the last 2 years. 2nd's are valuable assets. I wish we had one this year because we would have been able to get a decent player.

Looking to 'next window' with a different core.... What are the chances that McDavid is Broadway bound? Panarin and Trouba fresh off the books? McDavid would be 29.

Hypothetically speaking, if McDavid doesn't re-sign and wants to 'test UFA', does Edmonton trade him to where he wants to go? Or do they mope into the end of the season?

I dont get the sense Mcdavid wants to leave edmonton, they'll give him whatever contract he wants. I see him more of a Crosby than an Eichel.

It's not about money it's about winning. McDavid is a consummate professional... after a while, 'not winning' pays it's toll.

He kills himself in training to be the best player ever, every season, just to continually fall short because the depth around him and coaching is not there. I'd force my way to a team with like a New York, LAK or god forbid, Carolina.

I think it's likely the Rangers add a very key component, likely at forward, at some point. They appear to have a good track record of developing and selecting depth options for themselves. Berard, Othmann, Cuylle, Edstrom, Sykora, McConnel-Barker, Chmelar. Mancini, Robertson, Scanlin, Emberson appear to be good defensive depth. They have Laf, Kaako, Chytil, Zibanejad as long term core pieces up front with Miller, Schneider and Fox on the back-end.

If it's not McDavid, it will be someone. Kaprizov is intriguing as well.

We’re gonna have to pay igor.
And if Kakko/Laf/miller are additional core pieces they’re gonna need to be paid.

I'm going to state this and I in no way mean it as a slight on Igor.

We should NOT be paying goalies a ton of money.

We fell into the trap with Lundqvist.

As much as we all wish it were different, having a good goalie tandem is enough to win a cup with a good team.

Great goalies (and their cap hits) are not necessary.

They were basically a game away from winning a cup last year, the vegas series was as close as it gets and i dont think Florida would have put up much more of a fight against Edmonton. They are one of the favorites to go the distance again next year as well imo.

Imo we need to focus on getting Garand to the next level before Igors contract is up, if he can step in on a league minimum salary we can use that salary else where for 3 years. The only thing is we need the next one to be ready for us to move on from him imo. You still need good goaltending to win, sometimes average goalies catch lighting in a bottle but Toronto, Carolina, Edmonton, Florida(until Bob stepped up last year) all struggle to win without good goaltending

8x 8 for a goalie of his caliber is appropriate.
Make the end of the deal very buyout friendly.

not giving him 8 years.

we just went through this with Lundqvist. If we want to re-sign him, take him to 35 years old. We'll be doing cartwheels if he costs 8M AAV

Yeah, as long as he comes in at $8m or less it's not a bad deal. Especially with the expected increase in cap. The issue the Rangetrs had was Hank making $8.5m which, at that time, was a considerably higher percent of the cap space.

the problem with Lundqvist is that he was getting paid that for age 36, 37 and 38. He was no longer the game breaker he was and it's a massive handicap.

I'd give Shesty a 6 year deal.

Which is why I said make the end buyout friendly.
Load the front of it with bonuses and pay most of it in the first 4 years. Maybe get a cap credit when he’s bought out for a few years.

Exactly. When Lundqvist signed is deal for 8.5 that was roughly 12% of the salary cap. Giving Igor the Sorokin deal would be less than 9% and a great deal IMO.

Igor’s contract is so far down the list of problem contracts for us.

Same for Hank’s. Let’s prioritize moving the bad contracts we give undeserving players before talking about the big contracts we give to good players.

that's just poor business. Going into a contract with the understanding it will be bad eventually.

By the time Shesty get close to an extension we will be sending new letters out for the next sell off. We will be dumping everyone for the next rebuild. Shesty’s next contract won’t be with us. Not an issue.
