Vesey signed a team friendly deal in leiu of becoming a UFA so, to me, that counts.

Zuccarello took it on the chin a couple of times for the sake of the team. You can make the argument that Zibanejad gave a discount and Kreider's contract is pretty friendly too.

If you're talking July 1-10 UFA period discounts only, then, yeah, the cupboard is pretty empty.

All the bargain signings point to a few things for me:

Cuylle and Othmann probably begin the season in the A. There is nothing wrong with that either. That's your top two wingers there. They'll both have a shot during camp, but unless they wow I'd expect both with 18 minutes a night in Hartford.

Drury is tired of trading for these same players at the deadline. Pitlick, Bonino, and Nash. All PK types. Maybe he's trying to take some responsibility from Mika in that regard. Also could be going a route where Chytil can play some wing.

He believes in Robertson and Jones to be the 3LD. Unless something changes, these two will battle for the spot in camp. Same goes for Emberson. They haven't signed one established NHL LHD. Makes me think prices on D are higher than normal.

He is learning from a mistake made at the TDL. He went for the star power, and some of that is the cap as is, but you don't mess with your team playing short to make moves. Having a plethora of ~800k players let's you field a full lineup and keep that precious deadline space.

I think that the thinking going in is that the 5/6 spot on the left side is Jones' to lose.

Most teams have their own Ben Harpur waiting at #7 and bolster at the trade deadline. Ideally, you'd like to have a better option but that's not in the cards right now.
