I definitely want to see Lafreniere lose races for 18 minutes a night while Kakko does pointless Marcel Hossa impressions. On the same line. On PP1.
Sure but let’s keep trocheck and all of his 17 pp points on pp1. That worked out real well instead of trying something new(until tarasenko came to town).

A few things.

Can't put Fox and Miller together. Two offensive D-men together is just asking for trouble. Fox is able to do what he does because he's comfortable with Linds staying home and at least feels safe that the forwards switch with him when he takes the puck low.

Miller or Jones on PP2 please. Why the f*** is Trouba on PP2?? WHY. WHY.

With the PP, two things might need to happen. Either we revamp the players on PP1 (I think KK 100% deserves time over Laf) or you switch them out at the 1 minute mark when the puck comes out of the zone. Giving PP2 15-20 seconds to work is just atrocious.

Only one thing needs to happen with the PP and that is not giving a PP2 a single second of ice time during any normal circumstance.

The window is only 2 years if they make it 2 years. If they fizzle next year it's likely that one or both of Trouba and Kreider will be traded when their NMCs move to NTCs. They tried the all-in approach the last 2 years and it didnt work, because the veterans couldn't get it done on their own. Incorporating the kids into the top 6 and PP, so 18 skaters can actually function as a TEAM, should be priority 1. It's the last thing they havent tried to get Panarin going too.
No it's only two years because after 2 years you won't be able to have a first overall and a second overall with this group of veterans and a goalie in their prime ever again. It's not an artificial timeline- its reality!

In 2 years they can get out from under the veterans and theyll still have their #1 & #2 OA drafted players under the age of 25 and the goalie (if he wants to stay). The team shouldnt be catering to a bunch of veterans who have flamed out in the playoffs every year theyve made it.

Yup it's completely dumb... I mean we see what the beats tweet out at every practice, so it's not like it's even being contemplated, or tried out in practice. Laf disappears? SO does every other player, meanwhile CK-Z have this supposed chemistry but CK (who I really do like) goes missing all the time, he has better line mates, gets more minutes at 5v5 and still had less 5v5 points than the disappearing Laf. I guess because fans don't see practice and only see the in game results GG was right to keep trying to force Troch and Panarin together even though it was like a square peg into a round hole. Maybe the two of them scored a ton in practice but since it didn't translate to in game success fans are wrong and shouldn't suggest breaking the two of them up.
I would assume since Kreider is on both special teams, that he gets less 5 on 5 ice time than the kids, and also less ice time in 3rd period with at least 3 goal lead, which is probably
This "earn it" bit is old...
Kakko started the season on the first line, and was absolutely dominant.
The problem was the other lines.
Yet Kakko lost ice time, not the other players.

Laf and Kakko need 18 minutes a game now. Give them pp1.
If they spend the season on PP1 the Rangers won’t make the playoffs. They might not anyway.

That stretch when the Rangers would be down a goal, he would put Miller and Fox together, and they would always have the puck was awesome, do more of that.

Fox being the only defender being able to carry the puck takes the burden off Miller, and then lets them both go to work in the offensive zone for long shifts.

They should be your top pair 25 minute a night guys.

Having 17.5m tied up in 2 defensemen who cannot play together is really not great. But Trouba isn’t going anywhere.

Completely agree. Kakko especially earned more time and a bigger role. He should’ve have PP1 time, especially when it wasn’t working and they were looking for answers.

I also thought Chytil earned the 2C spot last post-season. Also I love Trocheck, but that contract wasn’t the way to go.

We should be more specific about what that means too. Moving forward, this doesn't mean throwing Kakko in the bumper spot without the puck on his stick just to say he's PP1.

Absolutely. Kakko works well at possessing the puck, cycling the puck, and creating along the boards, especially when he’s behind the net. There’s certainly a role for him.

I think defined roles needs to be a thing going forward too. There came a point where the PP became extremely predictable. The whole building knew Zibanejad was going to rip a one timer from the top of the circle and teams were ready for it.

Kids on real minutes means redesigning the game so it suits them, including playing to their strenghts on PP1 something we have never seen. They have never been asked to be the trigger men on the PP, those jobs were reserved for the Big Stars. The Devils built their system around the players they have (Hughes, Hischier) they didn't try to make them plugs devoid of creativity with the puck, because they didn't have a Panarin to market etc etc.

Put the kids on the Panthers or the Avs and you'd see totally different players, if for no other reason that they would constantly be moving their feet and the puck. Mackinnon and Rantanen (e.g) developed because they always knew they were going to be the big go to guys and they were played as such from almost the start to help them get there. The NYR have never been arsed to do that with their kids. The kids were always an afterthought.

The NYR 5v5 game have sucked donkey balls for 2 seasons straight under Gallant and before that Quinn was out of his depth. Managment and coaching of this org has been ludicrously bad and, unfortunately, Drury's finger prints are all over that too.

What I see with Kakko is a kid who is doing his darn best to keep his head above the water and develop himself despite the Pejorative Slured situation he finds himself in. Laffy kind of played dutiful hockey in the playoffs doing what he was asked of going up and down the ice, playing mistake free etc but it was clear his heart was not in it nor his mind, he was checked out like a large part of the team. This is not acceptable.

Drury needs to un-f*ck this team, but I doubt he's the guy to do it, his fingerprints are all over this mess.

Shesterkin won't allow them to miss the postseason, but they finished 3rd with giving them basically no time on the PP and had over 100 points.

The kids need to grow. They were never given any lumps to deal with. Veterans insulated them initially, which is how it should be, but the coddling is going on for too long. They should have been elevated last season, and at worst this season after their postseason success.

Now we're sitting here with Lafreniere off his ELC, not knowing what direction to go with him, and Kakko with 1 year left on a friendly deal that will need to be re-upped next summer, which is hopefully aided by the cap going up significantly since the escrow from COVID is done with.

This kind of thinking baffles me. The kids need to grow up and start playing good hockey consistently. You get playing time by earning it. Amazing how some of the other kids like Fox, Miller, Lindgren and even Igor some how took off pretty quickly. Maybe they just are not as talented as people think they are. I mean a guy like Chytil just finished year 5.

Eh...

I dont think that makes much of a difference. You could have two very good Dmen that are both right handed or left handed, so you split them up into even top 4 roles. The problem is Trouba isn't completely worth his contract and isn't suited for the PP, so you lose out there. But it isnt the end of the world if hes great 5 on 5 and on the PK.

It is what it is, like you said he's not going anywhere

Trocheck makes a difference everywhere else.
Meh, he's fine but I don't see anything special besides winning face-offs on the pp. He's not great at deflecting the puck, he's not great at creating space for the other players to move around, he doesn't hound the puck, or create a large amount of turnovers when the other team has the puck on the pk. To me he's kind of just there, and eventually takes shots that go wide which helps out the other teams pk to get the puck and clear it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see it but feel free to elaborate where else he makes a difference.
