The MLB, NFL, and NBA all have trade protection clauses too, and players in those leagues are better compensated than NHL players, in sports that are for the most part less dangerous than the NHL. Players give up compensation in return for those clauses as well. If they're on offer, they'd be silly to not take them
That’s fine and all but that’s still not my problem

That’s REALLY tough. I’m very back and forth, it would depend who is left..
From a value standpoint, that is pretty fair.

Tough to pull the trigger when we don’t have a replacement for Schneider ready in the system. He’s still on his ELC and we have no cap space after all.

The NHL really overstepping their bounds here and just taking it upon themselves to hand out the Man of the Year award at their awards because Karlsson didn't play a lick of defense last year.

I mean there was 0% chance that he wouldn't win it putting up the numbers he did but he was absolutely terrible defensively/in his own end. Award should be "best offensive defenseman" award.
Sure but it's not called the best defensive defenseman award either, defensemen have their own role in offense doing certain things that forwards don't. His offensive output this season was more impressive than whatever defensive output the best defensive defenseman had, he had a historic season. Especially after being seen as an over the hill injury plagued player with an albatross contract. Well deserved winner

Just heard an interesting fact: there’s 217 players with some form of no trade clause in this league, that’s ridiculous
We can thank the hard cap for that. When you're limited by a hard number how much money you can have on your roster you need to find other ways to incentivize players to sign and if the difference between getting a guy you really want or him going somewhere else is giving him that trade protection then you have to do it, especially when it's become the norm.

If there was some sort of luxury tax system or cap for drafted players vs cap for signed players or something, maybe NMCs wouldn't have been given away so easily because the richer teams could flex their spending power a bit more but unfortunately right now the only thing really to do is offer trade protection and give a lot of the salary in form of signing bonuses.

And he can’t play defense, which is what the award is actually for. Karlsson played 30 short handed mins this season. Fox played 174 and Makar played 162 and missed like 20 games. It’s a joke.
The award is not for defensive play. It’s for being listed as a defenseman.

Most underrated player by his fanbase in the league
Not in the playoffs… or at 11.6 million. He’s not the third most valuable layer in the league, not close, but he is paid as such. Hes a valuable player in the regular season, though I doubt we miss the playoffs without him. Though honestly, if we are going to be shown the door in the first round because he is a no show, maybe it would be BETTER to miss the playoffs and get better draft picks.

they can afford him. We could get 2-3 strong bottom6 players from Goodrow's salary.
That’s great, but he’s taking him at that dollar amount for 4 years? … and if we retain on him, then we need to replace him so what’s the point. We paid a lot to move Nemeth, but Goodrow’s number is just as bed with twice the remaining term.

Agree 100%. Each team should only be able have a certain number of players with NMC'S, NTC's, etc.
In theory it sounds nice, but are we really protecting teams from themselves. Plus, once you had your number you couldn’t add certain guys in free agency. Deadline deals would be nearly dead since most contenders would be at the limit. It doesn’t work.

No idea who this guy is hosting the awards but he is absolutely terrible. Maybe the worst host for any show on television I've ever seen in my life.
They leaned too hard into the Nashville angle. Love the music, love the attitude, but why is a country music star hosting. Plus they threw his son into it which was annoying and you could tell awkward for the players.

Anybody do #11 for Braden Schneider?
I’d strongly consider it depending on whose available.

Kane has made over 100m in his career. He’s not looking to maximize earnings.
Are you sure about that? He certainly maximized his last contract.

The NBA has had only 10 players gave a no trade clause. A player is eligible if they had played in the NBA for 8 years and 4 years for the team they are re-signing with. MLB has a 5 and 10 rule. A player who has played five years for his team and ten years in the league. A player with 5 and 10 can veto a trade without having a no trade. Some baseball players do have no trade clauses. The NHL is ridiculous. Every free agent gets a clause. Very few NFL players have a no trade clause.

Those players are better compensated than the hockey players because they have more revenue. The media rights for the NBA, MLB and NFL dwarf the NHL.

Motte thinks he is getting the bag in free agency. Let him explore free agent. Last summer, Motte want unsigned for the entire summer. He signed for one year and $1.35M. I am sure Drury has told him what the Rangers are willing to pay. Motte isn't getting the bag. So many players will be available this week. Some players will not be qualified. That will only add to the glut.

The Rangers should trade Goodrow for free or buy him out by Friday. The Bruins fans were appalled Sweeney didn't get an asset for Hall. They freed up $6M. Nashville had to retain 50% of Johanssen to free up $4M. Last summer, Vegas traded Pacioretty's $7M to Carolina for free. Vegas attached a young D some people liked. Goodrow has a 15 team no trade list. His agent would be open to a trade to a team on the list because they don't want a buyout. What type of contract is Goodrow getting this summer as a free agent?

Thanks for this post because you explained it better than I could but this was basically the point I was trying to make

Let's remember all of this the next time the owners are blamed for everything and the players are pitied as underlings.

NTC/NMC's are a HUGE perk that give players A LOT of leverage and self determination. It's going to be a big sticking point to try to remove or limit during the next CBA because of the precedent that's already been set.

The NMC/NTCs in this league are ridiculous but they are just about all the players have going for them. They are also of much more importance in this league because of the relatively high probability of getting shipped to Siberia against your will (those other leagues don’t have teams in Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg).

I have no idea how to grow this sport. It seems like the best way might be to contract out of the undesirable Canadian cities but I wouldn’t personally advocate for that.

The growing lack of willingness for players to play in those cities becomes more of a problem every year it seems.
