Roster Building Thread VI (2022-23): Offseason edition

That’s actually not a terrible idea. I’m of the opinion they should give jones a real shot but I think Robertson is closer than people think and more of a prototype NHL defenseman with the size and skating. Jones for Drury would be pretty similar to the Keane for Goat trade a few years back.

I didn't mind it in my 20s as a novelty. Not in the mood to be in a mosh pit 7 AM in the morning getting elbowed in the kidneys smelling beer and piss.

Not to mention the looneys are out and you have to be extra diligent nowadays.

If it were me running the show, Jones in the #6 this year and Harpur the 7th.

The Rangers don't have a lot of draft capital this year so the goal is to gain some more picks and look for centers and European sleepers who are slight but really really good at 1-2 things (skating, shooting, etc.). Even if it's moving a few guys out for 6th-7th hope round picks.

I don’t see a difference between the two. Goodrow looks overpaid on a good team and Laughton looks underpaid on a bottom feeder

Laughton is quicker can skate and has better offensive skills.












He sticks up for teammates, has more offensive skill. Cheaper than Goodrow and is a better skater.

Vancouver wouldn't do that. The entire point of them trading Garland is to free up cap space. Unless they are going to do that deal then immediately buy out Goodrow, it makes no sense for them.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the Rangers either. We are up against the cap and looking to move Goodrow to clear some cap ourselves, not add cap. And if we did make that deal, which of Kreider, Kakko or Laf is playing on the 3rd line?

They should of just drafted Drury 2nd round over Lindbolm

Jones for Drury If he really wants out makes sense value wise

I doubt he wants out since he played in the playoffs though

I mean, pretty much every player lives in the city or Greenwich, or both. I highly doubt their wives don’t like living in the burbs. Do you think players signing in fl live in the heart of Miami or in the burbs of Miami in a massive house? This is weirdest narrative I’ve heard. Esp when nyr just had two star players who forced their teams to be traded to nyr. Sure not every player wants to come here or some have multiple places they’re ok to signing but in FA panarin only wanted to come here and took (marginally) less to play for nyr vs nyi. And whatever you may think of him now, he was an absolute star when he signed.

All of those are HORRENDOUS. Staple should go on sabbatical the rest of the offseason.

Yeah, I am tracking all of that. The thing is Vancouver does clear cap with that move, and can potentially clear all of it by moving Goodrow again under the assumption that he is not a negative asset (he might be, I don’t know).

We take on only 1.4M but solve the RW problem. Kreider and Laf are LWers.

But I do agree. Filling out the roster with Garland on the books becomes very tough depending on what Laf and Key sign for.

But one of them, or Panarin, will either have to play RW or play on the 3rd line. Adding any top 6 RW is going to relegate someone to the 3rd line and it would most likely be Laf. We'd be better off letting him play in the top 6, even if it's at RW. He will either figure it out or he won't. If we doesn't, then at least we know and can then make moves to deal with it.

I'm into it. Jordan Staal said he wants to stay in Carolina. They have a ton of cap space, I'd be surprised if they dont re-sign him. That would put 3 centers ahead of J Drury on the depth chart. Top 9 wing will probably be tough to crack as well, he's gonna have a hard time getting meaningful minutes there. It's not all that different from here though. Opportunity here for a top 9 wing, 4th line is wide open. I guess if he impresses in camp you could look at him at 3C, bump up Chytil and move Trochek to RW, that fixes the right side. Drury is good on faceoffs. Could be a fit at 4C.

I'm not crazy about trading Jones for him though. Theyre only a year apart but Drury will be turning 24 during the next season, he's kinda getting to that age where if you're not established in the league the chances are starting to fade.. how much trade value does he really have then? They have plenty of cap space, I'd try to move Goodrow there for Drury and a pick.

Pierre LeBrun reported that Bill Guerin will likely be trying to move Alex Goligoski since they’re approaching their cap crunch of hell season. He was scratched a lot last year, but still could be a good 6D if we need if they don’t want to give Jones a chance. Put him with Schneider and force Schneider to stop pinching and being uber-aggressive all the time. Could be a decent alternative for the people who want to re-sign Mikkola. One year left at $2M. Would be a better PP2 option than Trouba too.

LeBrun also mentioned Duhaime and Marco Rossi in the article. Rossi would be a great add to help bolster the lack of young forwards in the pipeline.
