The core needs to be blown up. I understand that's a very risky and difficult thing to accomplish, but it needs to be done.

Your best, highest-salary players can't be one-dimensional. They need to be able to win with speed, skill, strength, *and* grit. It can't be just one of the above. Panarin is not a playoff performer. Anyone paying him to be an elite star player is setting their organization up for failure. And he's not the only one that falls into that bucket.

Beyond that, the development of young players within this organization is a complete and total travesty.

I'm starting to dig deeper into possible alternatives for Panarin at this point. Some teams that appear should be interested:

Vancouver - Looking to shake things up and they have some higher cap hit players they probably want to move on from. Boeser. Garland. OEL (ew). Myers
What about a Panarin for Boeser + Garland framework? Cap hits come close. The Rangers distribute the cap hit of Panarin over a couple of guys who may fit in better with the way the team is moving forward.

Nashville - After a disappointing season and a compiling of draft picks, I wonder if Nashville looks at a player like Panarin as pushing them back in to contention along with Josi. They have Johansen and Duchene as big ticket forwards who aren't exactly dragging their team to contention.
What about a Panarin for Duchene + Tomasino framework?

Seattle - 2nd year in the league and they have put together a competitive team that is on the verge of the 2nd round. They are a group of good, not great players. I wonder if Francis would be looking to add a high end piece and utilize his depth to do so. Bjorkstrand. Tanev. Wennberg. Dreidger.

Vatrano, Motte, Copp, Braun >>>> Kane, Tarasenko, Motte, Mikkola?

One group helped us get to the ECF and two wins away from a SCF appearance. Jury is still out on the other group but it is not looking good.

Still gave up three draft picks, and allocated $2.65M in cap space for Kane which will result in the Rangers taking a $610,891 cap penalty for next season. All of those cap shenanigans to accrue enough cap space.

Brooks wrote this today

Kane is Larry's boy. Linda Cohn of ESPN. She was on Larry's podcast back in December. She loves Kane because he calls her Mrs. Ranger. Patty Kane. Get him.

Ineffective???

This stupid GM acquired Tarasenko and then Kane. Really?

Sam Rosen referred to Tarasenko and Kane as being thoroughbreds after the Rangers made the Kane trade. Send them to the glue factory or to the meat market in Europe.
i am not in anyway defending the roster decisions at the deadline, i am trying to find some sort of silver lining here to make this not feel like a complete disaster, but it is hard to do.

If your Captain needs to throw a helmet to get his team to play hard there’s a deeper issue and I have no clue how you solve it. I wish we just committed to a true rebuild.

I also think there’s something to be said about having THE RIGHT pieces as opposed to just getting talent. Guys that go in and do the hard work and create space that allows your top end talent to shine. It’s why a guy like Copp might’ve been a better add than Patrick Kane.

If Pens new management decides to move on from Sullivan, I think he’s the front runner and it’s not close for next coach
Sadly I don't think that is going to happen. Sullivan is a great coach, he would be such an improvement on Gallant.

What we really need is Coach Q but he's still banned and who knows what the temperature is around his status and whether or not the Rangers would want to go down that road. He's one of the best coaches alive though so it would be great if somehow he could come here.

The effort is appreciated but really a waste of time since there are only 2 spots he might waive for, both in the state of Florida.

Tampa doesn't need him and would have to do a whole lot of voodoo in order to make it happen. Panthers make sense.

What about LAK? I would think Panarin would be at least interested in going there. They're a team on the up, no big UFA/RFAs to re-sign this summer besides Vlardi & Korpisalo. Next summer Kopitar is a UFA and I would think he would stay in LA for a lot less money that summer. Maybe NYR can nab one or two nhl or near nhl ready like Kaliyev, Turcotte, or whomever esp if they take back Peterson and his 2 more years at 5 mil which could get them to re-sign Korpisalo.

I could see Panarin considering Seattle or Nashville. Both cities are pretty nice, especially Nashville.

This team has no identity. The Devils are young, fast, explosive and also can step it up D as we have seen this series.

This team is way too talented to play like this but maybe what Vally said last is 100% true that it’s just a team of stars and not actual team. I miss the 2012-2015 teams. Give me guys like Callahan and Girardi any day of the week in the playoffs who would throw their body out in front of a moving truck if it made their way on the ice.

I think this is also the benefit of having guys that play together over a long stretch of time and allowing them to build chemistry.

Those Ranger teams had guys that player together and won in Hartford. The Rangers tried to rush this thing, and instead of focusing on the positives and building from there, they tried to go all in way too fast. Part of why the Kreider-Zibanejad-Buch line worked so well was because of that. Fox and Lindgren had played together before the Rangers. When the Rangers drafted Kakko they never got him a solid veteran center or winger to break him into the league and have he and Chytil develop into a 2nd Line.

My friend, who does get some information from time to time, told me Rangers were going to trade Panarin to the Flames for Tkachuk last offseason but Panarin nixed it. Flames condition was they wanted a player just as productive as Tkachuk so there wasn't a ton of teams lined up. Not sure if that is true but that would have been absolutely amazing and game changing for this team.
That's the exact type of player this organization needs

Obviously they've been drinking that NYC fluoride water too long 😉

Getting Trouba I understood. It made sense to have a tough, minute eating veteran defensemen while our young team progressed. I like Trouba and I like pretty much everyone else on the team.

I do not like Panarin and I did not like the signing. It was clearly JD pushing for it, just like he probably forced JK to sign Johnny Hockey. If he likes Panarin so much, they can have him back if they like.

Vancouver. Ottawa. Nashville. Florida. Never count out Vegas cause they are crazy out there in the heat. Anahiem. LA. There are teams with cap space and players that can be moved. Again, NMCs aren't the hard stop they are made out to be on this board. We are the only board that seems to believe these things have holy power. Same goes for never being able to use LTIR to go over the cap.

Just food for thought:

Panarin, after his signing bonus ($10m) is paid this off-season has $17m in real dollars left on his contract for 3 years.

Duchene, after his signing bonus ($2m), has $18m in real dollars owed for 3 years.

If Panarin would waive for Nashville, that may be an attractive shakeup for both teams with additional pieces coming back to the Rangers. And Nashville has picks to spare...

Players have the same term left. Duchene plays center/RW which actually fits the Rangers needs a bit better.

while it would be great to have that type of player, one guy isnt going to move the needle very much. It's more of the style they have to play as a team....

Panarin reminds me some of Kovalev.....but in the Cup year, Keenan had even AK27 playing a gritier style and go to the dirty areas of the ice. The team had that mindset. We can get all the Tkachuk's and Callahans, etc. we want....but it wont matter if the game plan and mindset doesnt change (and I'm not a GG hater).

The idea that major changes might occur would inspire a lot more hope if I thought the organization actually understood the problems.

If they can't even identify the problems they're not going to blindly stumble upon the right solutions.
This, 100% this. They will think they need to be even more tougher and that's it. Drury will draft/sign/trade for "people who know how to win" and "play the right way" right after getting bounced by a team with 1 Stanley cup ring who played on stacked TBL teams.

Instead of trading Panarin for Tkachuk, they should have been trying to trade Trouba for Rasmus Andersson. Not that either would have happened but it's the principle of the matter. That would have made a bigger difference than the other suggestion.
