There's a lot of talent on that unit, but it looks like no one wants to play in the bumper spot. Zibanejad has played in that spot before, but he's by far our top PP weapon, and you should not move the guy that is scoring all of your PP goals off his spot. Kane and Panarin are both at their best with the puck on their stick, and the player in the bumper does not get much time with the puck. So if Kane and Panarin both want to be on PP1 and neither want to play in the bumper, then we have to move away from what is considered to be the only PP formation worth using at the NHL level to accommodate them. Maybe Gallant is letting them give it a try so they can see it doesn't work before he moves Trocheck or Chytil up to PP1 and goes back to the 1-3-1.
