Call me crazy but Filip Chytil looks Jagr like...big strong ,setting up players. It would not surprise me if he is the 2nd best Ranger in 3-5 years just behind Kakko. Also sell high on Pavel..he doesn't carry puck through neutral zone, lousy instincts and weak on the puck.

Howden is this year's Pionk. You'll see.

I don’t think it will be that far, especially if he can chip in on offense.

He did fine until his first injury scare last season, and that kind of kicked off him hitting the wall.

The key will be if someone like Chytil struggles and people feel Howden is getting time they want to see another guy receive. Then this board will turn, as it’s tended to do for more than 20 years.

am i missing people hating on howden or just not mentioning him? aside from his goal he hasn't been mentioned all camp, and not just here, by the media and on twitter as well...we should be taking about him more but I definitely don't see him as a whipping boy.

that job will be held by staal and skjei

What I don't like about our roster/prospects is the lack of grit/physicality. Kreider likely traded by the deadline. most of our gritty players are either invites that we will release or players that could be picked off waivers when we send them down.

Couldn’t agree more. Nobody like smaller skill players more than me. I don’t care if we have 14 of them. But — you gotta have at least 3-4 guys who can set some kind of tone.

I think you left out Lemieux. He will help greatly. But I would like to have seen at least one more guy like that.

I don’t know if they necessarily have to come through the draft. I think you kind of make your own bed with these guys. They often must round out there game on the job. Look at someone like Kreider. He has become a legit top 6 forward and was a big talent to start with — but he still needed a lot of time to figure things out.

These guys are often lost in the numbers game. If we are willing to move assets to try out a couple of guys around 20-23 y/o I think we would strike gold eventually.

This year no, and I hope it stays that way. We definitely were there, or on the verge, last season.

It’s just unreal to look at a roster that could feature Chytil, Howden and Andersson at center. There’s being young at a position, and then there’s being really young.

Because this board can’t help itself. It honestly can’t.

There always had to be a guy it ****s on and a guy that it elevates well beyond the realm of normal understanding.

In this case there seems to be multiple guys it likes to sell short and guys for whom it usually gives the benefit of the doubt, or day I say, almost coddles.

I get the sense some of it is the board's way of evening the scales. Some people feel Andersson got the shaft and Howden was Quinn's golden child. I thought both he and Buchnevich had rough starts to the game, and eventually found their footing. Chytil came out strong, and DiGuiseppe was the only other forward was my vantage point.

You wouldn’t guess it by looking at the threads, but Howden had a one goal, two point night.

Going into this season Chytil, Andersson and Howden are fighting for 2 middle 6 C roles. From last season Chytil has an advantage regarding 2nd line center role and last night he gained even more there. Andersson and Howden for 3C? I honestly was more impressed with the former’s first game but the battle is not over and likely will continue throughout the regular season.

The reason people are down on Howden is because he had a terrible season last year. He's young and could get better and does some things you like to see but by almost every single metric he was among the worst in the league. He also did not play particularly well last preseason to force his way onto the team (like Duclair did years ago) to start. There was no reason that a 20 year old like him had to play every game in the NHL when he was struggling so badly instead of being played in a key role in Hartford against competition he could handle.

that to me sounds like a complaint about the coaching and front office that is being unfairly directed at the player...its not howden's fault he didn't play in the AHL

This, It's not some personal vendetta against him as far as I can see. And with regards to his game last night, it just wasn't that impressive, so I don't know why anyone would be fawning over it. He had the two points but one was an assist off a face-off win and one was a redirect on a PP, fine. But other than that he was non-descript.

I'm more cynical and I think it boils down to the fact Howden was part of a package for McDonagh labelled as disappointing. Chytil was a later first round pick that doesn't carry the expectations that Andersson is saddled with. Or the pressure to make the McDonagh trade a win.

There are those factors, too.

Simple season upcoming to understand. It really is

We have the most young talent I can remember and I’m 50 years old.

Let the young kids Play. We will lose games early as they make mistakes. We will be really good last 1/3 seasonal they get their legs and heads adjusted

Miss the playoffs finishing bottom 1/3

Lundqvist shits the bed and “retires” with an mysterious injury

4 of Chytl, Fast, Kreider, Names, Howden, Anderson get traded for picks and specific needs

We roll in 2020/21

No, he didn't have a terrible season. He had a great start, rough middle and strong finish.

For some reason people completely leave out the good 3 months while harping on the bad 2 months. Whatever fits the narrative

The Narrative?

When I think of a patently rose-colored Howden narrative, I get pretty much what you've repeated here.

Howden reminds me a lot of Brandon Sutter. Which helps me understand his appeal to some (especially coaches) while reconciling it with his horrible results.

Maybe he'll score twenty goals one season too. Here's hoping.

Can we please fire Lindy Ruff now and get someone else...like anyone else? Can we bring Beukeboom or Ulfie back or hell, try Leetch? Or bring in Guy Boucher, Scott Niedermayer or Dave Farrish? I don't care who; I just don't want it to be Ruff. As a former defenseman, Quinn should know a bad defensive system when he sees one.

Agreed. Grit is good. But Kreider is really not gritty at all.
