Maybe that's not the only thing that matters to Fast, a professional athlete with one significant mode of income that he can only draw from for the next ten years and has to last the rest of his natural life and also support a family.

Interesting. I know coaches love him, but I could also see teams inquiring about him come the TDL and we already have a plethora of forwards with no room for prospects like Gettinger, Barron, Henriksson, etc...

Guess now that he’s about to enter his UFA years, I kinda thought he’d get dealt and replaced with someone who’s under team control for a while to come.
Shows the rangers absolutely love him and more importantly his contract ask is gonna be reasonable. But don’t expect an extension to be more than a year or two. Plan would be to have him UFA heading into expansion or with one year remaining to limit the likelihood of him being picked. (More for his protection than bc he’s too valuable to lose)

It’s possible that ada and his agent are looking at the same thing and are maybe holding out hope that if the right forwards are the odd men out it frees up cap space for him to get a multi year deal

Very possible

ADA’s camp could be saying gorts has a deal coming, too many forwards, so wait until after he makes that move to sign instead of before.
But I don’t think the extra 350-500k should be his 1st priority. He’s got bigger dough he needs to think about

I like Fast very much, he’s one of my favorite players on the roster. He’s not going to play above the 4th like this season because of our depth at F. Even his current salary is more than we can afford for a 4th line/special teams player because of Panarin, Trouba, our inability to move bad contracts. It’s time to see what we can get in futures for him and let him cash in on his work, be a leader with a team ready to make a run.

The rental market is going to be lean this deadline. I think Fast has earned a bit of a raise and if he's looking to cash in he's a good candidate to be traded

Fast was crap last year. He was supposedly injured and couldn’t practice. But if he doesn’t play well this year he will neither get traded at the deadline nor get a raise — because there will be little to no demand for him on the market.

He must perform and produce on the ice.

I'd guess a Fast extension is more closely related to having a forward eligible for the expansion draft than actually keeping him on the team. I love Fast, but you can't get caught overpaying your bottom-6 forwards.
Good point. Fast is good but probably the epitome of a guy you hate to lose but when you do you don't really regret it.
I would still hope he puts up 20 for Seattle.

I don't mean to come off as mean spirited or present any negative energy and I'm not in a bad mood or anything so apologies if this comes off that way but c'mon people why are we dedicating so much time to Fast? We've talked about this ad nauseam for the last year. This is his last year here he's going to price himself off this team and the bang for buck isn't there.

He owes it to himself to get the best contract because this will be his biggest. He can thank the Canucks and Islanders for giving ridiculous deals to fourth liners.

He's been a really good Ranger but he breaks down. The hope is that a Gettinger/Meskannen/Elmer/Fontaine/etc. develops into a solid bottom six forward to take his place and if not, than his minutes go to some combo of Anderson/Howden/Lemieux.

He'd be a great depth pick of for a team like Colorado to strengthen their bottom six for a playoff run because he's had some really good playoff runs (2015 and 2017).

I’m totally fine retaining Fast as that veteran bottom-6 player who provides solid 2-way play and veteran leadership for a young team. He knows the organization. They know him. By all accounts his teammates and coaches all love him. He plays pretty difficult minutes and is a utility knife type player who provides flexibility for the coaches. I’m not giving him $4m but if he wants something like 3 years at $3m I’d be fine with that.

Young teams require some veteran leadership in the room. They could do much worse than retaining Fast. Also it will most likely allow them to expose him in expansion so that will check a box there as well.

Teams really need to stop being in the market of giving Bottom 6 guys more than two years term and more than 3% of the cap.

Well, with the way everyone is talking, it seems like it's more of a 'gong show' until we see what happens with the stuuuuupid lockout.

No?

The Rangers will need expose two forwards for the expansion draft. Two forwards signed for 2021-22 who played 70 NHL games in 19-20 & 20-21 or 40 NHL games in 20-21. Maybe they sign Fast to an extension.
It takes two sides to sign an extension. How are they going to come up with the cap room to be able to sign at a number acceptable to Fast? Next season is going to be even tighter with the Shattenkirk penalty hit. I don’t see it.
