I’d like to think all of the young players will improve this year but to what extent, I have no idea. How that nets out will be interesting to see. Since many are in direct competition for playing time, that adds to the drama. Competition for jobs raises everyone’s levels. I see a real battle for jobs on the third and fourth line and the bottom defensive pair. That’s a good thing.

One guy I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss is McKegg. I’m not sure he would clear waivers. There was competition to sign him this summer. He was signed for a reason.

Yeah it’s hard to know.

And what makes it super exciting is that it’s more the norm than the exception that if you put enough great talent at one place — all will develop exponentially because they push each other. Are we there yet? That is of course not a given. But you can’t rule out that we are either.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Fast quietly signs an extension sometime this year.
Interesting. I know coaches love him, but I could also see teams inquiring about him come the TDL and we already have a plethora of forwards with no room for prospects like Gettinger, Barron, Henriksson, etc...

Guess now that he’s about to enter his UFA years, I kinda thought he’d get dealt and replaced with someone who’s under team control for a while to come.

I'm sure there was a lot of competition to sign a known AHL-tweener to a...*checks notes*...one year contract at close to league minimum.

Also, Fast is going to become too expensive to keep for what he does. Spend that money up the line-up.

I’m pretty sure extending Fast will turn into a huge mistake (assuming it’s something somewhat long term and not like 2 years).

Of course. Never buy an unseen horse!

Several players are in a contract year so it should be real interresting watch them be on their toes right away. Also, 26 years old most of them. Room for progress.

If a cup is won soon, will it be in 2020 or 2021?

PS. Defense upgrade is the work of a genius.

Overpay for a 4th liner 3rd twenner is stupid especially with the way he was breaking down and out of practice towards the end of last season. Big mistake to resign him unless he wants a discount. Trade Fast is the best option. Playoff teams would love him

Wait. Why? ****. I feel like such a dope right now :(

YOU should not feel dope. Someone else should. For five seconds. We are talking our favorite subject here. Should be fun! Fast is a character guy. Almost a fourthliner on Team Sweden. Well, maybe not. Quite sure he will not pan out to be a bust. Rather one of those players who elevate their game in the playoffs. Also quite sure he won't make more than 3.5 million next season. And deliver his eight goals and strong two way game.

Jesper Fast resigning would be the worst move we could make. The guy can’t stay healthy. Even when he’s playing it’s usually because he’s sucking it up and playing thru something. A dime more than he’s already making even if healthy is a dime more than he’s worth.

For Fast the most I'd offer 2.5 per year on a 2 or 3 year deal. If he wants more cap hit and more term he can be dealt. Currently makes 1.85 mil cap hit.

Afaik the roster decisions obviously depend on the season we will have. If we stink, sell out. Fast, Nam, Kreids, Lettieri (if there is anything to get), whoever else.

If we actually play well, I'd still like to see Nam dealt though. Re-sign Kreider and Fast to good contracts hopefully.

A dime more than he’s making is overpayment. He cannot stay healthy. He plays hurt constantly. You give him 2 mil and It’s 2mil a year you’ll be wishing you could get rid of to get a kid on the roster instead. I’d gladly rather see nick jones or jake Elmer on this team next season in that spot. Both continue to impress and both are actually good penalty killers

I'd guess a Fast extension is more closely related to having a forward eligible for the expansion draft than actually keeping him on the team. I love Fast, but you can't get caught overpaying your bottom-6 forwards.
I also don't know why Fast would sign a team-friendly extension. He should fire his agent if he suggests that. This could be Fasts next to last contract, and probably he won't ever get a higher number than now.

Panarin Zibanejad Buchnevich
Kreider Chytil Kakko
Namestnikov Andersson Strome
Lemieux McKegg Fast
Haley Howden Kratsov
Nieves (who apparently is having a really strong camp)

Way too many guys even with Haley obviously not making the team, Smith is going to be a swing man and play up and on D according to Quinn. I don’t know what Gorton is doing but in the process of keeping to many forwards he’s lowballing a righty dman we really need in camp and ready to take the next step

DeAngelo has no leverage. The Rangers will have no problem playing Rykov, Reunanen, or Hajek in DeAngelo's spot.

I agree, and I don't necessarily want to even waste money signing Fast. Like I said before, he's a great Ranger, but there's too many important contracts coming up, and I don't want to get stuck overpaying for a bottom-6 forward.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone were willing to give him closer to $3M on a 3 or 4 year deal.

Maybe that's not the only thing that matters to Fast, a person.

I think we should try Brendan Smith at Goalie and put Lundqvist at center. His twin brother is a center so naturally he's probably really good at it.

No no no. That's twinergy. We're going for synergy. We need to move Lundqvist to senior advisor so that Sather can play LW. Sather at left wing would have synergy with Mika Zibanejad because Sather smokes a cigar, which sounds like (Zdeno) Ciger who once played on a Rangers roster with Mikael Samuelsson. Since both Zib and Samuelsson are Swedish Mika's, there would be an obvious connection that would create instant synergy.

It’s possible that ada and his agent are looking at the same thing and are maybe holding out hope that if the right forwards are the odd men out it frees up cap space for him to get a multi year deal
