There are new options for the upcoming season.

Miller will be starting a third year of s highly steep NHL development curve. So he doesn’t really need Trouba anymore for training wheels. If Gallant is willing to give Miller - Fox a shot as #1 pair then it’s almost given that Lindgren - Trouba WON’T be #2 behind them. Instead it would make more sense to spread out experiences and use these two vets each paired with Schneider, Jones, Lundkvist or Robertson.

Those are possibilities too. Push comes to shove though if they do something like that Schneider probably averages around 17 minutes a night and whoever gets the 6D 14 or 15 and sits a bit in 3rd periods.

Moving a Vezina winning goalie on the front end of his career I don’t know. What do you get back for that? Probably big names coming back that are going to be cap expensive too and likely not quite as good at their position as Igor is at his.

If Garand keeps improving, I am trading Igor before the final year of his deal.

Nice to have a top 3 goalie

Not needed to win cups.
There’s a different perspective needed here IMO. Not a top goalie can ruin a cap contender chance at winning the Cup (even to the extent of losing in a first round). With a top goalie you essentially give your team a chance year in and year out, as well as allow your team to have a cushion to find it’s game if it’s not there early on in the playoffs or even in a particular series.

You mean whoever gets 4D next to Trouba 😉 (since Schneider will be paired with Lindgren).

If the real opening is on LD, then you have to assume it'll be Jones or Robertson with Schneider taking the 3-RD spot.

That said, pairings of Jones - Trouba and Lindgren - Schneider offer a lot of balance as well as the option to shorten the bench as needed.

Robertson - Trouba could also be tough to play against.

It would be nice to have someone other than Trouba man the 2nd PP, and that's where I think Nils/Jones get a leg up. I don't mind Trouba as the blue line shot option, but he's not a great PP QB.

It would open up things a bit. Trouba would probably be more stay back safety net if it’s Jones and closer to what he was last year if it’s Robertson.

Schneider and Lindgren would be interesting. How that affects the other D would be something to watch for. Also the Rangers will need to win a lot or Gallant will go back to those top two pairings again.

Just watched the clip of Strome's shootout open net whiff where he's too busy getting ready to complain to the ref before the play was even dead and shanked it. If Trocheck has 65IQ and feet for hands, our center depth is gonna be so much better to watch.

Multiple sources conveyed a strong determination on the player’s part to change the perception about his character and commitment. He was bothered by the narrative that he’s an entitled brat and has gone about his training this summer with that serving as motivation. His agent, Dan Milstein, confirmed that he arrived in New York in early July and has been skating frequently with Rangers teammates at the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown.

“He's saying and doing all the right things,” Rangers director of player development Jed Ortmeyer said. “He came back early to train and be ready, and it shows the maturity and the desire to be here.”

If he's focused and the Rangers are willing to give him an opportunity, few question whether he has the talent to succeed. In fact, two scouts interviewed for lohud.com's prospect series made an argument for Kravtsov to be ranked No. 1.

"I just think the upside and potential is higher with Kravtsov, which is what we’re looking at as scouts," one said. "You try to project them out three or four years."

One scout likened it to the evolution of former Ranger and fellow Russian Pavel Buchnevich.

"He’s always had the skill," he said. "Same as Buchnevich. He had immense talent. He would dangle, make plays and score goals — and then the strength came and the confidence came. You see the player that he is now."

Whether the baggage from previous breakups will linger into this final chance with the Rangers is a legitimate question. But if they can dance to the same beat, there are still plenty who believe Kravtsov will become a quality NHL contributor.

"Talent wise, he’s going to be a top-six player," another scout said. "It’s a matter of time."

One of the things that over time progressed nicely for Buchnevich is his physical play and determination to round out other parts of his game. Those helped him to become the player he is today. Not only a very good offensive contributor but an excellent penalty killer and someone who can be trusted in just about any situation and doesn't take a lot of shit too. This is where I would like Kravtsov to go if he's going to become an important part of our team. Kravtsov has the size and it would benefit him to fill out a bit more and to use that size if only just to lean more on defenders. It's something that both Chytil and Kakko are still working on so he's not the only one though I would say I say I saw a bit more of that from Filip in the playoffs which I think helped him be more effective all over the ice and helped to push his production numbers up.

Summer Hot Take: Nils takes the LD spot on the bottom pair with Schneider and becomes a dependable defenseman with a little offensive flair. He keeps the spot during the season. Jones is traded at the deadline for some help elsewhere.

I think Nils is being slept on a little too much. He wasn't great last year, but I think it totally could be a case of just needing a little more adjustment to NA rinks and game. He showed improvements as his NHL time went on. I think he goes out there in camp and has a non-flashy but consistent performance that earns him the final spot.

Goaltending these days is definitely a nice to have on a contender, but not a must have.

Elite offensive production is a must have.

And when the NYR never have good contracts on the books, constantly have dead $, usually have 1+ boat anchor UFA player etc. they need every free penny they have going towards the must haves not the nice to haves.

New York Rangers

Who’s new: Vincent Trocheck, Jaroslav Halak, Ryan Carpenter.

Who’s gone: Ryan Strome, Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano, Alexandar Georgiev, Patrik Nemeth, Justin Braun.

Reasons for optimism: The talented core is intact and a team that was considered too young to do much of anything last year matured in a big way. Igor Shesterkin won the Vezina and got Hart Trophy votes in a breakout year and he’s back for more. Jacob Trouba was named captain and at 28 is the old man of a very talented D corps. Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad are still in their primes. A healthy Sammy Blais should shore up a bottom six that needs more consistency.

Reasons for worry: Shesterkin will need to carry a heavier load than in years past, even though the mood in the dressing room will be lighter without Alexandar Georgiev around. Jaro Halak is a capable backup but Shesterkin will be looking at 55-to-60 starts. Chris Kreider’s 52-goal season was a delight, but can a guy who never topped 28 in his career prior do it again? Filip Chytil, Alexis Lafrenière and Kaapo Kakko had a solid playoff run, but none of the three has posted big regular seasons yet. Panarin gets a new center in Vincent Trocheck, but Ryan Strome was Panarin’s BFF the last three years and there’s a need to get the chemistry going quickly.

Bold prediction: K’Andre Miller gets more Norris Trophy votes than Adam Fox.

Poll results: 82 (four first-place votes)

— Arthur Staple

KAM gets more Norris Trophy votes from Adam Fox......

NYR are out in five games with a league average goalie last year.

But this is all way to early to discuss. Not only will the roster likely look substantially different by the end of Shesterkin's contract, we will also have much more knowledge about Shesty's consistency.

Most goalies aren't like Hank Hasek and Luongo. They have big up and down years.

Jonathan Quick from 2012 to 2013
Ryan Miller
Carey Price

These guys all had Vezina or close to Vezina quality seasons mixed with year where they'd post like a .905

Whether this is Shesty's new normal, or if he will bob up and down, is yet to be seen. If he goes back to .915 next season people here will simultaneously cool on him, as will his projected market value.

Yea they arent needed to win cups if you have a powerhouse of a team in front of them, which we don’t. We don’t sniff the finals in 2014 without Lundqvist. And Kings don’t win multiple cups without Quick.

Teams that won the cup without a top goalie were the Avs and Pens who had powerhouse teams. Canes had that magic postseason by the goalie I can’t even remember which was a fluke.

You don’t let the top goalie in the NHL just walk in hopes some kid will be anywhere near as good. Whatever money he wants he gets.
Quick was insane in the SC against us. Stopped us on breakaway after breakaway. Yea, Hagelin stunk on those and would get 1 per game, and CK's stone hands were definitely harder back in the day as well, but still Quick had to make lots of high end saves matching Hank that series.

And I think it was Cam Ward in his rookie season when Car won the cup, and then Ward fizzled out the rest of his career with mediocre play, with the team giving him opportunity after opportunity to recapture his great play which just didn't happen.

If Shesty wins us 2-3 Cups before his deal ends....I would listen to all offers LOL.....and might even consider one LOL....

Thanks for the shutouts and thanks for the draft picks.
This many days till opening night:
