Scouts had always expressed confidence in Cuylle’s powerful left-handed shot, but his offensive efficiency exceeded what most could have hoped for. He became more of a play-driver and showed a knack for finding soft spots in the defense, particularly excelling as a difficult-to-move presence in front of the goalie while improving his hand-eye coordination for tips and redirects.

“He has a great shot and he'll get to the dirty areas with no problem around the net,” Savard said. “He's a good guy to play with because he gets in, bangs bodies and creates openings for his linemates. They’re able to get pucks, and then he goes to the net where he gets rewarded.”

Robertson's post draft trajectory has actually been pretty unique in that he has neither exceeded, nor disappointed, relative to expectations every single year since the draft.

His range and upside are literally exactly the same as when we drafted him.

As of now he’s 4th on Ld depth chart
Hajek is around but I doubt they see him more than a fill in

I’m confident Jones can hold his own on the 3rd pair

at the moment I don't have anyone penciled in as Schneider's partner on the third pair. Looking at Jones or Lundkvist it's a question of whether their offensive abilities will be enough to offset their possibly needing to be sheltered from certain players or situations and the Rangers ability to find them enough offensive opportunity that they can play more to their strengths. Nils would also have to prove he could handle switching to the left side or even if a Schneider left and Nils right could work. Robertson OTOH might be the safest choice as he probably won't need to be sheltered all that much especially as the season moves along. He just doesn't have the offensive game of the other two. And there's a question there.....do we need more offense from our D or do we need better defense? I lean a bit more towards better defense at least from the third pair and part of the equation is I really like Schneider but he is still kind of raw too.

I know Robertson was #4, who did he have at 5-10?
10. Trivigno
9. McConnell-Barker
8. Korczak
7. Sykora
6. Berard
5. Garand
4. Robertson
3. Cuylle

1 and 2 are Othmann and Kravtsov in some order. He is purposely leaving guys like Schneider, Jones and Nils off I believe.

I get schneider but nils and Jones both haven’t played significant amounts of nhl games. They’re still rookies technically.

Sure but Vince says he wanted to focus on players that the fans were not as familiar with. It’s a fair point to me.

The two guys i want on PTOs and making the team are Motte and Stralman.

Then move out Gauntier, Hunt, Hajek.
Who does Stralman play over on the right? If Motte was signing a PTO he would have already. He will wind up getting overpaid by the Devils or Islanders.

If Garand keeps improving, I am trading Igor before the final year of his deal.

Nice to have a top 3 goalie

Not needed to win cups.
I honestly don’t think Igor is getting another contract and I’m relatively okay with it?

Yet these are nervous times for players who didn't find a home during last month's free-agent frenzy; or, in some cases, didn't heed the advice from agents like Jerry Buckley.

"Don't get greedy. Find a place to play at a good number and get going. Because these musical chairs can get taken really quick," he told ESPN this week.

That's especially true under a salary cap that rose only $1 million to $82.5 million for the 2022-23 season. The "flat cap" has impacted the free-agent market and overall player salaries.

"The unfortunate part of this year in general is that the marketplace has shifted because of the cap," one NHL agent said. "You have a weird situation where you have 16 or 17 teams that want to lose and you've got the rest that want to win. The cap has incentivized losing in a way: 'Hey, if I'm not going to make the playoffs, I could do better by selling my cap space.'"

The agents always complain about teams not trying to win. Maybe teams don't want to overpay some average 4th line player $10M over 4 years.

Does Danny DeKeyser fit the Rangers as the 7th D?

"We weren't sure what the landscape was going to be. But we've been pretty encouraged," the agent said. "The interest has been good. We feel pretty confident that he's going to get a deal before training camp here. It's going to take some time to shake out. Hopefully we know more this week."

Federico is confident that DeKeyser will have a deal in place before training camps open next month. It could be in the range of a $1 million "show me" contract, as DeKeyser attempts to rebuild his reputation.

"It'll be a lower money deal, but it'll be a chance to showcase himself outside of Detroit," Federico said. "We kind of look at him as a Jack Johnson type, where he had to kind of reinvent himself and play at these lower numbers. But [Jack] is getting more years out of his career having done it. Danny has to reestablish himself."

$750,000. Ryan Martin knows DeKeyser from their Red Wings days.

Honestly, if we wanted to keep a veteran 6/7 guy around we should have just kept Braun at the 1x1 deal he signed for in Philly.

DeKeyser is awful
We need kids on elc's for the next couple years. Jones and or nils need to be on the third pair unless its a true vet min deal for a guy who isnt a vet min.

Yea they arent needed to win cups if you have a powerhouse of a team in front of them, which we don’t. We don’t sniff the finals in 2014 without Lundqvist. And Kings don’t win multiple cups without Quick.

Teams that won the cup without a top goalie were the Avs and Pens who had powerhouse teams. Canes had that magic postseason by the goalie I can’t even remember which was a fluke.

You don’t let the top goalie in the NHL just walk in hopes some kid will be anywhere near as good. Whatever money he wants he gets.

Look at the cap hits of the goalies that have won the Stanley Cup recently. Igor could be the highest of any of those and the Rangers don’t have wiggle room as it is. its Hard to win a cup with a goalie getting paid that much, and goalie deals can get ugly quickly.

Cap will be much higher in 3 years. Not too concerned. Kreider and Trouba will likely be on the way out.

I will believe the cap will be “much higher” when I see it. Also remains to be seen if the team wants to move its best goal scorer and new captain. A lot of variables here.

Braun is married and I believe there are school age kids. He's set up in Philadelphia. He probably wanted to go back there for obvious reasons primarily he doesn't have to uproot everything. We shoulda done this or that isn't always possible. Just saying.

Right now we're looking at Schneider/Jones, Schneider/Robertson or Lundkvist/Schneider as our third pairing with Hajek as an insurance policy. Basically a rookie pairing when you consider the best player so far will be 21 years old with 40 some games NHL experience and the insurance policy is a guy who has made almost no progress the last 4 years. Rangers management though might have confidence that such a combination might work. I have no idea. They know the players (on and off the ice, their conditioning levels etc.) better than we do. That said they might also want a better insurance policy than Hajek or are not sure that any of the combinations will work so it wouldn't surprise me if we did go out and get someone else for a low cap number....that we can also bury.
