Most of the time when players waive it is usually in, or for the last year of that contract (unless they want away from whichever team they are on) Likely because they know their current team is not extending them anyway, so they may as well try somewhere else.

I think since we only hear about those who do waive their clause, and not often about those who refuse, it seems like players waive them more often than they actually do.

7th D

Lindgren-Fox
KAM-Trouba
Jones?-Schneider

Bring back Brendan Smith? He only made $800,000 in 21-22.

The free agent D list is slim in the Rangers price range. >$1M

Hard to see a future for Lundvkist here. I think he gets moved this offseason, especially if Drury is not able to find an affordable center in free agency.

eh just for fun

Sign Stastny for 2 years at 3 mill per

Lundkvist and a 3rd for Nic Roy (this might be off)

Don't know what Sissons would command but it might be low?

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Chytil
Kreider-Roy-Kakko
Panarin-Stastny-Kravtsov
Blais-Goodrow-Sissons

3rd line might be a bit dumb since no one would should but I like it. still quite a slow team though.

I'm starting to come around on the idea of letting both Strome and Copp walk and doing something similar to the above.

Even if Roy/Chytil end up not being the guy behind Zibanejad, you still have some space and chips to go out and pursue that guy. If they are, we're good.

Copp is good, versatile etc. but tying up the money right now may not be the best option. Especially if it comes attached with some sort of no trade protection (which hes going to end up getting from someone if he hits UFA.)

Lindgren's value is never going to be higher. He's already starting to break down and while he's tough as nails, he gets banged up a quite a bit because of his style of play.

Needs to be at the right time.

Next offseason would be the very soonest, depending on Jones and Robertson.

24 is a little young to be offloading a guy who plays so many minutes for us at such a fair value.

My preference would be to wish him well in 2024, along with Trouba.

I was watching the Warriors last night. They foul every defensive possession and travel every offensive possession. Four rings. The Astros steal signs. Manchester City have their kits sponsored by a family-owned company to skirt FFP. Don't get me started on the Patriots.

If you ain't cheating, you ain't winning.

The Lightning are the best team going at constant interference and it's something the Rangers actually need to get better at. The experience in this run should help.

They should also get out of the Trouba contract when they feel the time is right just like how Hossa got an "equipment allergy" and Carey Price...idk, died? We didn't even really get an explanation, he just doesn't play anymore and might "retire."

Tyler Motte reminds me of Dorsett when we traded for him

he was costly for a 4th liner but he was an extremely rare player who never took a shift off, was fast as heck, and actually had skill with it. He was a big reason why the Rangers would start in the defensive zone and end it in the offensive zone basically every time. But he was expensive (i think $1.67 M which was a lot for a 4th liner back then) and you felt his loss when he left. Also, he played higher than he should've in VAN and they were sick of him by year 2.

Motte feels like a carbon copy of that situation.

Trouba will have additional big money contracts after this one expires, so I doubt he'd voluntarily retire and end his career 5-8 years early.
Well, they apparently get guys to do it although you're right that Trouba might not be in that age cohort.

We have a forward who will be and has a very believable history of injuries.

Yeah, it's just that. I've grown very worried about what his contract looks like and the fact that the Rangers seem to think he's a RW, demonstrated by the fact that he basically never played center in the playoffs at 5 on 5, and an injured Ryan Strome played center over him.

I like Copp and would want him at the right price but we also have to be wary of the sunk cost fallacy.

Those picks aren't coming back to us whether he signs here or not. If he signs at less than market value that's one thing, but we have no evidence to indicate that is the case.

Not signing either Copp or Strome leaves a big hole in the lineup, but also leaves us a lot more flexibility in terms of not having to move Trouba or Kreider (Who are better contributors than Strome or Copp) until 2024.

The question is whether we can get a Vinny Prospal-esque bargain bin signing at Center. Stastny is going to get a solid paycheck on a short term deal, which might price him out of our range.

Zibby-Chytil-Goodrow-4C is also an option, though not a good one. Goodrow should either start the season as a 3rd line wing or 4th line center and move up as injuries occur.

I think it's a bit of a fallacy though that Copp has to take a less than market value contract to fit though. Copp at sub $5.5m is a market value contract. Sub $5.125m is less than market value. Either of those deals would suit the Rangers just fine

Getting to the CFs add a lot to your next contract though. It's not that we can't afford him at 5-5.5 Mill (though I don't think it's a good move), it's that the borderline teams will throw 6 mill at him and he has no reason to decline that.

Fun scenario that likely isn't happening, but could fit under the cap...

Trade...
- Kakko + Nemeth + whatever else needed for Patrick Kane @50%

Sign..
- Tyler Motte - $2.5M cap hit (is this realistic?)

He was on the third line of a team that won the Cup twice. It doesn't seem like the worst thing.
Bit of a difference when he’s riding shotgun to Gourde and Coleman than potentially slotted between Blais and Kravtsov. Plus, unless another addition is made, he’d be slotted up to 2C if Fil or Mika ever get hurt.

I like Goodrow and the role he fills. I dislike the lack of a contingency plan if we lose out on Copp.

Getting to the CFs add a lot to your next contract though. It's not that we can't afford him at 5-5.5 Mill (though I don't think it's a good move), it's that the borderline teams will throw 6 mill at him and he has no reason to decline that.

He mentioned it in his exit interview though, he wants to compete for a Cup. Could he get $6m from Buffalo? Sure. Seattle? Sure. Those teams aren't making the playoffs next year or likely the year after that.

I think we make a good line out of it. It's possible is what I'm saying.

I could honestly see a Motte-Goodrow-Raffl line, for a rough cap hit of ~$7.5m being a PIA and shut-down line for the Rangers for the next few years. I'd move Blais to one of the other lines to provide some physical presence there.

8th in the regular season at 5v5 TOI and 4th in the playoffs for Tampa last season. Played more 5v5 in the playoffs than Killorn, Stamkos, and Cirelli. Basically the same as Kucherov and Coleman.

Not the worst thing to have him on the 3rd line, but the line needs to be a checking/shutdown/cycle line, not a finesse line. A line like Blais-Goodrow-Motte could be similar to that line. I don't know if Kravtsov is that kind of player. I have worries where if it was Kakko that the line is too slow, but fits the shutdown/checking mold better. Coleman and Gourde are above average skaters. Goodrow is average. Blais is average too. If Kakko's skating gets better, that line would work.

I'd play Kravtsov with Zibanejad/Kreider at that point. That line could be a blur and Zibanejad and Kreider are good enough defensively to pick up for Kravtsov, similar to how they did for Lafreniere earlier this season. 2nd line is then Panarin-Chytil-Lafreniere. The two kids meshed well together and Panarin could use the wheels the young guys have. They'd also drag him in to the cycle game. Pure offense type line.

4th line can be a work in progress. I'm still bringing back Motte, especially since you are saving on not signing Copp/Vatrano. Rydahl was not signed to roll in the AHL, seems like a 4th line candidate based on scouting reports. Hunt/Reaves/Brod could hold spots down as 12/13 forwards. And if a kid surprises, maybe Blais can be on the 4th line.

Plus you are banking cap space for another push at the deadline if you want to add.

Buffalo can.

They were legitimately good after the ASB.

Lundkvist and Nemeth to Detroit for Pius Suter. Let Suter/Chytil compete at center next season. Re-evaluate the position next summer.

None of the three are really good offensive players. Coleman and Goodrow had the same number of points this year.

They were a "sum of their parts" line that had chemistry, I'll buy that, but I don't buy the narrative that Goodrow was a passenger to two great players. They're all third liners except maybe Gourde.

Gourde was 186th this year in p/60. That's barely ahead of Frank Vatrano. It's half a goal per 60 behind Ryan Strome. He's not that good.
