Vatrano is a great player. Strome should not be back, and if Copp wants to cash in, then we should 100% look into resigning Vatrano in addition to Motte. More speed is always better, not worse.

I don't see anyway that Drury resigns Strome especially after his 2nd half of the season/playoffs and a possible hip surgery. It just won't happen. I'm expecting cheap veteran centers filling in as 2c/3c depending on how Chytil does. Maybe he can work a miracle and hit a home run trade for a center on a great contract but that's going to be tough to swing. I feel the best option is to pair Panarin and Mika anyways so that totally takes Strome out of picture. Mika has the talent to play the game Panarin wants to play even when games get tight. A line of Kreider/Chytil/Kakko will have no problems shutting down top lines. Laf can slot in as top line RW.

Everyone ignoring the fact that strome played the last 30 or so games with a pretty debilitating injury while celebrating Lindgren for his toughness is about what you'd expect from this fan base. He will likely be the best option we'll find in that price range, and if Chytil is really able to play top 6 mins then it will happen, i don't see it, he looked alright playing sheltered mins this playoffs but he lacks vision and if he has to play against the Hedman's, Letang's,Cirelli's, Staals, Malkin, Crosbys of the world you will be sorely disappointed.

I don't see them breaking up Mika and Kreider to be honest. Esp after Kreider scoring 50+ goals with him.

Other teams lines would be fighting to go over the boards against Kreider/Chytil/Kakko

1. RH shot is in the Strome spot. Panarin can make this simple pass and a RH shot is able to accept this pass on their forehand and wrist a shot. Or the middle man can receive the pass, be a threat to shoot and cause the defense to react, and bump it right back to Panarin.

2. Panarin goes down low to Kreider, at the side of the net. Kreider has an easier lane to one or two touch it to a RH shot in the middle of the ice. Granted, the Rangers don't attempt this play as much as a lot of other teams (Islanders, for one) because we have better first, second, and third options.

From my POV, no matter if you have a LHS or RHS there you can’t leave him open. That Panarin to Strome pass won’t work a ton. Most of these plays Strome is there for relieve Panarin/Fox/Ziba, a LHS can do the same. Panarin can’t find a LHS for a direct shot, but it’s just as common that you see a shot pass from someone in Panarin’s spot to a LHS for a redirection.

Strome can and has redirected shot passes from the Panarin side on his backhand. Redirect on backhand and shoot on forehand is much more preferable than the reverse.

Just saying that I don’t think it’s material. It’s not only Panarin that got the puck on our PP. when Ziba has it on the left side it’s the exact same thing, he can find say Laf with a pass for a one timer or pass it down low to Kreider who can get it to Laf for a one timer.

It’s the same with Panarin’s position. Plenty of PPs do great with a LHS in that role, it’s even more common.

If you want shots to come from the left, you need a RHS there and a RHS shot on the blueline. Or vice versa.

Strome will be missed on our PP for a transition period. He never tried to do too much, and so forth. But structurally, I just don’t see why it would have a big impact.

With that said, this is not a topic that I currently feel I have a great track over. Perhaps I am missing something, but it has to be more than opening some door and closing another for it to be material. What is material is when it allows a PK to create situations that they can use.

If the bumper is a LHS it also opens up an easier shooting option in the slot if teams over-commit to Zibanejad.

He actually then has an additional play. 1 timer, down low to Kreider, or to Lafreniere in the high slot for a 1 timer / quick shot.

It's a little surprising that it's only a 1 year deal @ below his QO. He could have just accepted the QO for 1.6 mil. Good for us though. Maybe he was worried he wouldn't get a QO.

Motte/Vatrano/Copp. Bring these guys back. Let Strome walk. Rooney walks. Trade Georgiev and Nemeth. Sign a cheap vet backup. Try to bring Braun back on the cheap. Try to cut some other dead weight if possible. Go to war with that lineup. At the deadline look at who you can add. Maybe Patrick Kane to slot next to Panarin-Copp.

With the Blais & Kravtsov extensions, The Rangers are now set to have Chytil, Reaves, Blais, Kravtsov, Lafreniere, Hunt, Kakko*, K'andre, & Zac Jones as guys needing new contracts next year. That's 9 roster players before you even account for a BUG & a 7th d-man. I like Andrew Copp a lot, but I don't know how you can rationalize giving him a 4-5 year deal with a ~5mil cap hit. He's a very good player, but he's not enough of a difference maker to add another late 20s player to this core. Strome shouldn't be an option at all.

My belief is that Drury needs to fill the open center spot with a player on a short term deal to maintain flexibility, whether in free agency or a trade. Given the cap situation, it's probably time to make a swing for a difference maker at center. We arent going to be able to bring back all of our young RFAs next year, specifically on the wings, with Kravtsov returning and Cuylle, Othmann & Berard expected to be making their NHL debuts during the 22-23 season. We also obviously dont have enough spots on defense for Nils, Jones & Robertson to play here long term. There's a trade for a C to be made if they so choose. The NMC guys waiving isnt an option until the summer of 2024.

The other option is signing a center, like Stastny, on a short term deal to play as a middle 6 C while Chytil gets another year to build on his playoff breakout and show if he can be a top 6 guy for us long-term. Both are good options, but my lean is toward swinging a trade. We are close to a Cup, its time to turn some young assets into a difference maker and reassess the roster when we have some flexibility after next year.

alright, let's table the kakko dach thing.

would dach be a target if we could get it done with nils and something else? the something else would have to be a decent add, but would dach be a player this team would like to add?

Yes. I’d even add slightly.

Lmfao comparing Lindgren playing through injury to Strome playing through injury. Lindgren was 1000x more impactful.

There was also no reason to have Strome play the end of the regular season through injury. There is no heroism in that on his part. He should have sat out. Just like he should have been a man and told Gallant and staff he could not go in the ECF Game 6 rather than being a forward down for the entire 3rd period and really the whole game with the way he was moving out there. No heroism there either. Oh and missing an open net in Game 5 that could have been a difference maker in going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Strome can GTFO once and for all.

The only one I would bring back is Motte, but even then the contract needs to make sense. Committing cap space to Vatrano when we have a sea of wingers at the NHL level or close to it is such a waste. I do like the player though.

It comes down to cost. I think Vatrano is a swiss army knife player in terms of flexibility to play up and down the lineup. Blais is similar in that regard. You can never have enough of those. Maybe Vatrano takes a team friendly deal over 3 years to stick around close to his home state of MA and with his buddy Trouba, while being on a team trending upward.

I also would get copp signed and figure out the 2023 roster decisions when we approach that bridge. Things happen. Players get traded. They get hurt. Try and keep this group together for the most part.
