I don’t care about regular season totals if you can’t play when the games mean something.
Panarin may be hurt but:
No look, soft behind the back area passes at the blueline that lead to rushes against
Forcing full width cross ice passes so you can find your bff Strome that get picked off 80% of the time
Trying to dangle a forechecker at your own blueline and turning over the puck for a prime chance against
Refusing to shoot from between the top of the circles while down 1-0 in the third period
Are not the results of injury but of lazy decision making that hurts the team. Sure, maybe the dangle gets through if he’s healthy, but at the best of times it’s a 50:50 play with a high risk of going the other way. There’s no excuse for him making 10 of these types of plays per night for 9 straight playoff games.
As always, he’ll get his points. He’ll get that big GWG and fan boys will flock to protect him.
Personally - he drove me crazy with the same type of decision making and refusal to shoot or to use linemates not named Ryan all season long and some of last season as well. If he doesn’t want to play big boy hockey when it counts, I am very much in favor of moving him. He has the second highest cap hit in the league - he is NOT a top 5 player in the league - so there’s some definite disparity there. His regular season totals ensure we would get a HUGE return for him. We could potentially find our young cost controlled center, for instance. Definitely add some very nice prospects and assets to the cupboard… while freeing up almost 12M per year, which solves ALL cap complications going forward.
Personally, I’d take a run at Tkachuk. He’s up for a new contract. Move Panarin, take back mostly futures, move what salary you have to and offer sheet Tkachuk with the Panarin money if you have to. Guy puts up 70-80 points in the regular season (not counting this huge year - scoring was up, wouldn’t expect that consistently) but changes the complexion of the team and shows up when it matters.
Probably totally unrealistic, so it’s moot because the Rangers won’t trade Panarin no matter how badly he plays when the team as a whole exceeded expectations, but in reality it’s the type of move this group needs to get away from this no-show, inconsistent effort bullshit. Tkachuk is even more of a pipe dream, but certainly replacing Panarin with a guy who scores 70 points instead of 100 but brings it consistently and doesn’t only play on the perimeter is a winning move, IMO.
There’s just no excuse. Guys on every team are injured. Panarin makes 12M a year. He isn’t allowed to “not like” contact in the playoffs for that money and he shouldn’t be immune to Gallant’s foot being up to the knee in his ass after the types and quantities of turnovers he’s made in crucial one goal playoff games.
