If Chytil was on another team, people would be proposing deals for Chytil. Lundkvist for Chytil. Kravtsov for Chytil. He has one more season remaining on his contract. He showed signs of becoming a better at the end of the season. He really came on in the playoffs. The Rangers don't get the opportunity to win 10 playoff games without Chytil's contributions.

Provorov($6.75M) and Konecny($5.5M). Three seasons remaining on both contracts. Those are the players the Flyers will probably attempt to trade. Both players have value. Elliotte Friedman mentioned JVR with one year at $7M is available. His salary is only $4M. He is owed a $1M signing bonus.

Scott Laughton with 4 years remaining at $3M AAV could help the Rangers. The Rangers need a 3rd line center.
I also heard that if phili cant trade jvr they will most likely buy him out.

Cap hit would be 4.33 in year 1 and 1.33 in year two. his current aav is 7m so that is a win for the flyers if they cant move him.

I like Key a lot based off what I’ve seen and the progress he’s shown, but a bunch of the same things were said about Brady Skjei after his first year. Size, good speed, offensive prowess (Skjei had a 40 pt rookie season), could carry the puck pretty well and even take the puck end to end for offense. He flat-lined/regressed the following year when he was asked to do more on the top pairing (if memory serves me right). The Rangers inexplicably gave him a big deal after that, which was highly risky the second it was signed because they didn’t have a good idea which direction his career was going after that season.

Miller’s positioning improved throughout the year, particularly since January or so, but it is still a bit suspect especially in the DZ. Not unlike Skjei’s issues. There’s still at least some level of doubt in my head about which way Miller will go. Where KAM differentiates from Skjei is he had been asked to do more as the season progressed and seemingly elevated his play, so there’s some good hope this isn’t Brady Skjei part two, but I think we have to pump the brakes a touch…

Apples and oranges. Miller is closer to prime McD. He's gotten better every week as someone who just became an NHLer last Januay.

Skjei started thinking he was Bobby Orr after his first season.

based on what? NYR is going to walk away from any awarded arbitration deal. If you can get a 4th you say thank you and run.

If someone offers a 4th I might do it if I were Drury just to avoid some hassle, but I don’t agree with the narrative that his value is nil which is what I said earlier:

“He gets a lot of shit from fans (me included), but looking at some of the goaltending this postseason, he’s significantly better and a potential starter for some teams. Even playoff teams.”

If the Rangers are planning on dumping Nemeth, and they trade/sign for an affordable center under $4M, there’s plenty of space to give Georgiev a qualifying offer (2.65). That’s maybe about $1M more than they are going to pay another journeyman backup. I don’t see Georgiev getting more than the QO in arbitration, so he’d probably take the QO. The Rangers can trade him then, and the next team will appreciate contract certainty, or they will have a better backup for Shesterkin.

This is all out the window if the Rangers go more expensive at center. Then they will have to move him or let walk without a QO. I just don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion. I think the org likes him more than the fans do.

No one is arguing that Chytil played well in the playoffs but this was the first time he has done so for an extended period. Hopefully this will continue next season but if you are Drurty do you really go into next season with him as the number 2 center knowing what the team expectations are coming off this run? I don't think so and quite honestly this could easily backfire. There is so much more to being a number 2 center and quite frankly FC has not shown those traits so far. He is bad on face offs, not a good defensive player and his on ice vision for a center is lacking. Not what you need for someone you want to put in the middle of 2 of your top 4 wings. Harsh but realistic.

I don’t see how it is apples and oranges at all. They are/were same age at this stage of career. Same draft pedigree. Same career path through college. Similar size. Similar skillsets, though Miller’s raw talent is admittedly higher.

Miller has gotten to play with Trouba. Skjei played with Kevin Klein (rookie season) followed by Kevin Shattenkirk (sophomore/regression season) so…with all of Trouba’s faults, we know he’s better than who Skjei skated with.

If the plan is to give Chytil the 2C spot, then Drury needs to find a very good 3C who can take some of the defensive matchups and sign him to a long term deal. Chytil and Zibanejad are unlikely to ever be defensive stalwarts, although perhaps they will be passable there.
I dont want to bang the drum for this but dvorak could be that guy to slot at the 3c and take the big draws.

His FO percentages the last years:
51.4
55.3
55.1
52.1
56.7

after this year coming year his salary will exceed his cap hit which always works for NYR money bags bc they can afford that kind of stuff. MAYBE you can get montreal to retain a million or so on that deal but the issue is whatever they trade him for will be matched up against what the traded to ARZ to get him.

cap hit is 4.45m. now if copp will resign for anywhere close to that money than it is a no brainer. that being said I have no idea why copp wasnt taking draws while playing with strome, his fo win percentage was:

51.8
55.3
53
53
54 (jets)
49.6 (nyr)

Stromes is:
44.3
48.8 (edm)
47.2 (nyr)
47.5
43.2
44.5

Makes no sense at all, especially if you had a hurt pelvis from since before copp got here. Copp shouldve been taking ever draw in that instance...

If someone offers a 4th I might do it if I were Drury just to avoid some hassle, but I don’t agree with the narrative that his value is nil which is what I said earlier:

again, he has arb rights. nyr is not going to accept anything an arbitrator awards bc it WILL be a raise from what he has now. nyr isnt spending that cap money on a backup and AG wants to go somewhere else that he might have a chance to play more than behind one of the top 3 goalies in the league. the rest of the league knows this, they arent stupid. nyr isnt going to accept the arb award and then risk getting stuck with a contract they cant carry. i just think you are trying to play poker when everyone else can see your cards.

He is a kid! He needs the opportunity.
He didn't just play well in the playoffs, he was a star! He average 12 mins a game and potted 7 goals. Not to mention endless scoring chances. The kid line was arguably our best line 5 v 5.
As for faceoffs, as he gets older and stronger, he will improve. Additionally, faceoffs are a team stat... Often it's the wingers who come in and push the puck back to the D. I guarantee he will be better in the draws next year.
This kid has the talent, work ethic and IQ to be a top centre in this league. Don Cherry used to say it all the time... give me the talent and I will teach the defensive side.
I will be rattled if we give a fringe second line centre the opportunity over chytil. No more Stromes and Copps... The kids deserve the opportunity.

Trading Miller is ‘killing my darlings’ territory for me.

But just for the sake of argument — which young center would be worth giving up Miller for? Stutzle? Jack Hughes?

I said early this year that there isn’t a player save for McDavid that I would trade K’Andre for given our cap situation. Like we can’t afford any big contract and we can’t move one single of the contracts we have (only Fox and Shesty don’t have NMCs).

When saying that, I envisioned that he wouldn’t break out as fast as he did and could be locked up say 5 years at 4m or whatever next summer. Miller won’t have arbitration rights then. Kreider got a 5 year deal at that age. About the same contract for Miller.

Now he might be a bit more expensive which brings his value down a bit. But at the same time, like we can’t trade Miller for someone that is due to make 8-12m per in 1-2 years. Right? It’s impossible given our cap situation.
I’m not trading Miller. The only player I trade him for (straight up-ish) is Zegras. its not happening though

What do people think of Ryan McLeod? Fast player. Turns 23 in September. Pending RFA, but shouldn't get a huge raise coming off a 21 point season. Every time I watched Edmonton this year, he was noticeable in a positive way. He was only 47.2% on faceoffs, but that's something he can hopefully improve. And considering Chytil, Rooney and Strome were at 43.4, 44.8 and 44.4, respectively, even 47.2% is an improvement. He seems to have good underlying stats, but has struggled to finish. He could be a candidate to break out in the next couple years.

I have no idea if Edmonton would be willing to move him or what it would cost, but I think there's potential there.

I've been saying this about Geo for months that we shit on him regularly but he's an upgrade for a decent amount of teams in a starters role.
That being said. NYR has absolutely zero leverage. Geo wants out. He asked out. He wants a starters role and knows hes not beating out shesty.
The rangers have long been known as a quality organization. Why? A great example is :Because in the rare event that a player asks out and does it the "right way" we typically follow through.
Geo asked out, but never didnt go with the team, didnt go back to russia. He did everything we wanted kratsov to do. He didnt have a fantastic year, but he stuck with the team, and now the team needs to follow through.
End of story.

How about they do that and then he signs with his favorite team at a discount to give us bottom 6 depth and size?

By most accounts he is part of the plan there moving forward. Everyone sees what you do.

That's how I see it. Chytil is ready to take the next step into a fully grown NHL player. Why block him now? Nothing says he cannot keep growing next season. Panarin's and Zib's contracts mean we cannot afford another "top" 6 C. Signing Copp/similar to a long term contract this off season can quickly come back to bite the team hard. It's easier to say "figure it out later" than actually figuring it out when later is now... If Chytil develops into our very own "Roope Hintz" over the next two seasons it's all good isn't it?

dear god no, he is cooked. dont want him anywhere near this team...

Skjei spent the extra year in college and had basically a full year in the A while Miller got thrown into the fire almost immediately. Their paths to the league have been very different. Key was already eating (and by playoff time, killing) top 4 minutes on a team that made it to the conference finals. At the identical point in his career, Skjei wasn't even an NHL regular. The rawness is why people are excited. Skjei was a pretty polished prospect before the draft with questions about his overall upside. Miller was a very raw guy whose upside wasn't questioned, but there was the risk factor of not knowing whether or not he could tie all of his skills together.

Saying that they have similar skill sets is kind of lazy, just because they're big and skate well doesn't mean that they're all that similar. They don't utilize their skill sets in the same way either.

Imo if you’re Drury the thing you should be prioritizing is building a team that can succeed in the playoffs and not be pummeled 5v5 so often. They’ll make the playoffs, they can win a round or two with a lethal PP and great goaltending. They need more postseason players, guys who can possess the puck and produce chances at even strength. Chytil has that. Whether he’s 2C or not, he has what we need, we need to keep him and add more.

With Panarin driving the line, I personally wouldn’t use Chytil at 2C, just get a speedy cheap guy who is either good defensively or not afraid to shoot the puck and let Panarin drive.

How about instead of signing Strome or Copp, make a run at Nichushkin?

Probably too risky of a move given the entirety of his career plus the fact that he's a winger but he has been a big time difference maker during this run.

He's likely to cost more than Copp or Strome, and signing him means pushing one of Kakko or Laf out of the top 6. It also means Chytil is the defacto 2C. I'm not against that, but if he doesn't step up, we've got no cap space to find a plan B.

We've got to ride the kids on the wing and hope they continue to progress. It's time.
