Does anyone know if Matthew Coronato grew up a Rangers fan. He is from Huntington, NY. The Flames took Coronato in the 1st round last year. He completed his freshman season at Harvard. The Flames tried to sign him or wanted to him. The Flames had a discussion with Coronato's advisor. The player is staying in school. All of the Flames fans are nervous about Coronato looking to bolt as a free agent in 3 years or he will force a trade like Adam Fox. The Harvard NHL guys stay in school 2-3-4 years before going pro.

The Leafs selected Matthew Knies in the 2nd round last year. Late 2nd round pick. John Lilley was the Leafs director of scouting when the pick was named. Knies had a so so season heading into his draft year. Bad 1st half. Better 2nd half. The player has had an excellent freshman season at Minnesota. The Leafs want him to turn pro. The player isn't so sure that is the best path for him. It sounds like the player wants to stay in school. Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek were discussing this topic last week.

I feel sorry for Knies. These Toronto guys are looking at him as the savior.

Coronato was an Isles fan.

Having the best goalie in the league isn't enough for some people

?

Shesty has been at least a top 5 MVP this season. Perhaps the MVP in the league. He then had a few games were he was more human (perhaps), but I had not seen them, so I just raised the question if it was about fatigue or just something else, bounces or whatever.

Why are we talking about Coronato?
It sounds like the Flames attempted to sign Coronato after his college season was over. The player is expected to stay in school. The Flames had a bad experience with Adam Fox. When it appeared Fox was not interested in signing with the Flames, they traded his rights to Carolina. The Flames fans are nervous about Coronato signing with them.

I saw Elliotte Friedman on The NHL Network talking how the Fox trade to Carolina went down. On the first night of the 2018 draft, he saw the Flames GM Brad Treliving talking to Fox's advisor Matt Keator. Friedman asked Keator what's going on and Keator said you will find out tomorrow. The next day Calgary traded Hamilton, Ferland and Fox to Carolina for Lindholm and Hanifan. Calgary made a run at signing Fox after his sophomore season. He said no. They traded him. The discussion concerned the Flames and how much Lindholm has blossomed in Calgary. He was part of the big trade.

When it appeared to Carolina that Fox was not interested in signing with them. the Canes traded Fox to the Rangers.

Both Fox and Coronato are Harvard guys. New York guys.

I just wondered if the Rangers could land Coronato in a trade if it appears the player is not interested in playing for the Flames. It appears Coronato didn't grow up rooting for the Rangers like Fox and Trivigno did.

You'd figure the Flames organization would learn and stop taking NCAA/USHL guys that won't want to sign in Western Canada.

Wasn’t Knies name leaked in the Fleury to Leafs rumors?
Dubas was mad at the Hawks GM Kyle Davidson for the trade discussion being leaked to the media. Chicago asked for Knies and Toronto is afraid of Knies thinking the Leafs tried to trade him. They are trying to sign the player.

Hagel and Fleury to Toronto for Knies, Mrazek(dump the contract on Chicago) and two first round picks. Something like that. Hagel has two goals in eight games for TB.

I heard Frank Seravalli says teams were leery of Hagel. He brought up Chicago trading Ryan Hartman to Nashville for a 1st round pick in 2018. Hartman had 19 goals for Chicago in 16-17. He had 9 goals in 17-18 before Chicago traded him to Nashville. Hartman flopped in Nashville and they traded him one year later for Wayne Simmonds.

Panarin finished with a game-high seven shots on goal and 15 total attempts, playing with the type of effort and energy that willed his team not to fold. He's played the past six games alongside Copp, which the Rangers' top trade-deadline addition said is starting to feel like a more comfortable arrangement.

"You just want to figure out where he has the puck, because he has the puck a really large amount of time in the hockey game," he said. "You want to figure out where he gets that puck, where his head is and where he's looking for guys. ... I feel like I'm starting to figure out when he wants me to drive the night (and) when he wants me to pull up, especially as that lefty in that one-timer seam. I’m starting to figure it out more and more. I think coming through the neutral zone, too, he loves the puck on his stick, he loves being dangerous. So, it's create time and space for him a lot of time."

Copp

In addition to trying to find some chemistry with Panarin — maybe a glimpse into the future with the Rangers? — Copp talks the way you want your guys to talk. On Sunday, he was unafraid to break down where the Rangers’ heads need to be for the playoffs. Gallant and some other Rangers demur when asked about the postseason, going with the “let’s get there first” cliches.

Not Copp. “The confidence gained from the way we played the last two periods, being able to come back, it’s going to happen in the playoffs,” he said. “I’ve seen it a lot. … Throughout the course of the playoffs, you’re going to have games you don’t like, losses feel heavier in the playoffs. Being able to reset ourselves mentally and just kind of clear your head and be ready for the next game — whoever does that best wins the Stanley Cup at the end of the day. They don’t let one loss turn into two, two turn into three. It’s who can reset their mind the best and come in with a clean slate the next day.”

Copp might not be as dynamic as Strome on that second line, but he has enough skill to fit this lineup. Not bad off the ice, too, with his words.

For two players getting to know each other, Copp and Panarin have connected for a few big time plays in Copp's two weeks as a Ranger. The Schneider goal in Pittsburgh. Copp lead the rush and passed the puck to Panarin who found Schneider coming into the zone and Schneider beat Jarry with a great shot. The OT goal in Detroit. Panarin to Copp. The goal last night. Copp scored his first Rangers goal off of a feed from Panarin.

Strome’s production is down this season (.73 pts/GP), compared with last season’s (.875, a personal high) and even to the prior season’s (.84). If Strome is auditioning for a raise, he’s doing a bad job of it.

Would his drop in production and Copp’s emerging chemistry with Panarin result in Strome accepting a modest or no salary increase on his next contract? I doubt it. If he can get > $5 million from any team in the league, I imagine he takes it.

Leaf fans are fully expecting him to immediately jump onto their 2nd line at the end of this season/playoffs. It has the makings of being a complete disaster for the kid

He played for the Gulls here on Long Island 01's. My friends kid was on the team with him. Coronato played up. Real strong goal scorer. That team was stacked but the coaches were young and inexperienced. The 99 Gulls team was insane. Coronato then left for Prep School along with a bunch of the kids on that team.

He was an Isles fan. The decision to stay in college was largely from his dad. Preached it to him.
