Just curious, for those of you who wanted to trade for JT would you be ok with this contract?

Seems way too long in term. May have dodged a bullet by not trading some solid prospects for only 1.5 years of him.

The length is fine, but 8.5m would've crushed us capwise. We'd be incredibly vulnerable to offersheets, and probably be forced to bridge players we dont want to bridge, and pay for it down the line.
players hitting ufa all want long deals. They want security and they want to know the amount they're making each year.
And while Miller will get 8.5m its also a deal that only a non contender will be able to offer. Not a cup team.

Meh I don’t like the length, he just turned 29. That’s a damn long contract for someone who will be getting paid that high of the season he’s having.

That contract will be bad years 5-8 imo

If he was just having a great single season i'd probably agree with you, but he's been a solid point producer for the last 2 years.
His game isn't built on one particular aspect, and if his contract is bad, mika's might be worse.

I don't know how this is still news to people.

We can't afford another $8.5M contract without major changes. Major changes that are long shots because these players have NMCs and are pivotal pieces to the team.

We're lucky to get/have Copp. I don't even know if we'll be able to afford Chytil, when he needs another contract. We have some dead money coming off but it'd be close, depending on KAM and Laffy's raise.

If they got JT at the deadline I doubt they expected to resign him. Probably would’ve just been for 2 runs at the cup while he’s @ 5.2 mill. Resigning would’ve been too complicated for reasons you mentioned

I'm confident in the teams scouting all of a sudden. They addressed and hit at a strong rate. They should be able to pinpoint a young ELC Center. We all bring up Turcotte, as he fills massive holes, but there's obviously others out there. Stephenson type of player is another option

Lets see how chytil does in the next 15games + playoffs. Since coming back from injury he's looked really good. If this is his game now, I'd be fine with him as a 2c and Copp as 3c.

It's actually a fair contract in my humble opinion. Players like him don't grow on trees. But we definitely couldn't afford him anyway. I was always against trading for him just due to the fact that I suspected we couldn't extend.

Him and Lafreniere having some chemistry can make a ton of cap problems go away (or creep up again if they're too good lol).

It’s a fair contract but I’d have no interest in the Rangers giving it to him. I still think Miller or Larkin could be big swing 1 year rental options in the summer if they can get the trading teams to retain half. Depends on how the playoffs and how close we think we are.

I dont think we'd have any space next year for something like that. And the math says that big swings like that dont work. Teams that add the splashiest name, have almost never won the cup in the cap era.
Its the ones that fill in the bottom 6 that tend to win the cup.

Thats true of the deadline for the most part.

Not really for the offseason though. Hossa was an offseason move for Chicago. Kessel was one for Pittsburgh. Boston added Horton the summer before they won. RoR was traded for the summer before St Louis won (they're a bit of an outlier team since their season was so wacky, but facts are facts.) LA is the one team that added a huge name at the deadline and still won (Carter, they also added a big name in Richards the summer prior.)

Ignoring the multiple cups won by some of those teams, thats FIVE teams that won immediately after making a big offseason add since 2010.

I don't think the Rangers need to go THAT big this offseason (and they may not be able to because of the cap. Depending on who or what is available, I'd probably steer clear of it too. Copp in for Strome and trading for a cost effective middle 6 center and getting a better partner for Fox would be my 3 primary areas of focus.) Really, Chytil taking a step forward would make life SO much easier for Drury and the rest of the FO this summer.

But its not a death knell if they DO add a bigger name. The trends actually seem to support that it does help push teams over the top.

After the report of Wings having a very fair trade offer for Barzal I can’t see em moving Larkin. They prob would want a 1/2 punch at C

Idk how reliable that report is but someone verified on twitter had it and there was a thread on hf about it about a day after the TDL

I personally wouldn’t be in the camp of getting JT here this summer. Would’ve wanted him for 2 playoff runs considering the cost it must take to acquire

That’s fair. Didn’t hear about the Barzal rumor though. I think Detroit isn’t as far along as some thing. Seider is a beast but they don’t play a lick of D or have a goalie. Larkin has a lot of links to the Rangers so I’m just connecting dots

I honestly think that no team making a big splash winning the cup is just coincidence. Like one or two teams make a big splash at the trade deadline, chances are they don't win.

After some digging I think I may have trusted the thread title a bit too much on that one. I don’t see Staple directly mentioning Barzal. Although ig it appears he was replying to someone who did? Idk. Could be a bunch of nothing

Yeah I completely understand why your connecting the dots & it makes sense. He has the links and would be a great add

I honestly think we're done 'big fish' hunting.

All adds will be like what we've seen this deadline, unless a team is willing to eat 50% for a long term contract.

A prospect 'hockey trade' is also a possibility
