While kessel only has 5 goals, he has 27 points, pacing for another 50 point year, would slot nicely next to kreider and z and likely cost nothing. Count me in.

Quite honestly, it just sounds like Chris Drury is doing his job and checking in on the available rentals and then offering everyone some combination of Kravtsov, Lundkvist, Jones, 1st, and 2nd because they're gone by the summer anyway then all the insidurrs are interpreting that as Drury hot for action. If he's the stale bread no nonsense GM people say he is, his "here's my offer, take it or leave it" approach would give the appearance that he's serious and horny compared to other GMs that will do a lot of foreplay without ever offering a package and then go into a bidding war toward the deadline.

Drury has the assets, cap space and motivation to do anything he wants at the deadline, and that is a very strong position to be in. I have no doubt they'll make some significant adds before the deadline, the only mystery left is who they will be

Why would he cost nothing? A 50 point winger definitely isn't going for scraps at the deadline.

JT Miller looked pretty darn good tonight. Had one bad turnover at the oppositions blueline but other than that he won some key faceoffs in the 3rd, defended well, skated well, and created offensive chances.

Don’t you think plan A was to have kakko and Laf in the top 6??
I think they had higher hopes for both kakko and LaF. Kravy was also in the mix.
Blais was a good safety net that could move up and down the line up when needed.
Both LaF/kakko having another down year, krav bouncing to Russia...again, and Blais getting slewfooted and tearing his ACL was kind of like the tornado of bad that all happened at once.

They also missed on Eichel.... we were def interested in him hard imo...
they’ve weathered the storm up to this point. But no one thinks we’re going to head into the playoffs without adding... if they do, they’re just wrong. Plain and simple.

They definitely did. They started out with Laf - Zib - Kreider on the first line at the start of the season, but it was awkward and Laf dropped down the lines. The second line was Panarin - Strome - Kakko but they didn't sync until after the long road trip when Gallant got Panarin to 'buy in' and step out of his parameter office.

The problem when evaluating trade targets is that while the East is pretty much set with the top eight, the West has 7 teams all in the hunt for that last Wild Card spot.

Teams in the east will look to have teams, especially the Rangers, pay an intra-conference tax. Some teams in our own division may not even be willing to trade with us.

Until there is more clarity on playoff positioning, those 7 teams are most likely not going to deplete their chances at additional playoff revenue.

Leaving the Rangers, at the moment, of having to work with Chicago, Seattle and or Arizona.

If I'm GMCD, I'm waiting until the Playoff picture becomes less blurred

Relative to other rental and/or non rental options he will be very cheap. Even with 50% retention his cap hit will be tough for some teams to acquire and he has a modified no trade. These restrictions will likely keep the cost down.

If the following trade was on the table, would you, do it?

Arz sends Chychrun to Florida for Lundell and then Arz flips Lundell to the Rangers for Miller?

I'm not crazy about given up Miller but for Lundell--2C solved.

Rumor is Lundell is/isn't on the table for Chychrun who really knows but Florida and Arz.

I would personally like to add to get additional players from Arz--Hayton (maybe add Chytil) could be a 3C and play again with Laffy.

Larsson could help at center or how about Nick Schmaltz who after being injured is putting together a nice season (plays RW).

Some people like Boyd/Crouse etc.

But the real question is the 3-way trade.

Arizona could use a center even more than we could, and trading Miller leaves us with a huge hole on the left side of the defense.

Good point!

There is a number of 1-2 year "rentals" that will be available. But for us it would make the most sense to deal with a team that is looking to completely blow things apart and is willing to ship out capable performers with good contracts and/or retention. There aren't many teams like that out there right now, and the team's closest to hitting that status -- or at least that should be closest to hitting that status -- are basically teams very close to us in terms of rivalties, in the Islanders and Philly.

Take JG Pageau for example. Him at 50% retention would be really attractive for us from my POV.

Almost every true contender is up against the cap. Teams will need to send money out or have money retained in order to make big additions. The Rangers don't need either.

I ask this, what teams can fit Giroux at the deadline? He has an $8.275m cap hit.

Same thinking for Kessel. $6.8m cap hit.

Same thing with Domi @ $5.3m.

Also Debrusk.

Let's look at the deadline cap space as it stands now for some of he contenders
[TBODY]
Tampa Bay$0

Edmonton$2.663m

Dallas$1.143m

Washington$2.074m

Pittsburgh$4m

Carolina$1.8m

Florida$1.623m

Toronto$0.928m

St Louis$0.318m

Colorado$0.76m

Calgary$5.56m

New York Rangers $33.78m
[/TBODY]
This is what I am talking about. So many of these teams who could be interested in the higher cap hit guys will need to send money back. How attractive will that be for those teams trading those players away? So not only will sellers need to find teams interested, they will need to create a market and be concerned with taking money back or retaining as needed to make it work.

This SHOULD be where the Rangers can step in as an attractive destination for some of these higher cap hit guys at lower costs than usual.

That is, unless some of the teams that are completely out of it step in to facilitate as 3rd parties and things get complicated quickly.

It wouldn't be to build with him, but to ride him in a spot where we literally have almost nothing right now. For a few months. Kessel, on a shit team, has more points than just about everyone we've tried at top 6 RW combined. And he'd almost certainly be the cheapest option. Would I want Kessel on the team for the next few years? No. But would I prefer him (and his acquisition cost and playoff success) for a couple of months over breaking the bank on a Hertl, Miller, or Smith (assuming they get value for Smith)? Hell yeah.

This is it. He would fill a need for this year and be cheap to acquire. He is not the old Kessel, however, he still can score points and is an absolute possession monster. He has a history of being good in the playoffs too. Phil is exactly the guy who might have another gear in him if he goes to a contender. If we get his production from Arizona this year only, that is still way better than what we are getting from the RWs right now.

And lets be honest, we could use a few more hot dog jokes around here too.

I'm all for this year only rentals. Take Kessel and Girouix and go to battle.

I'm also all in on Chychrun if we send Nemeth the other way. Give up 1st Kravstov Chytil for him.

We may go to the playoffs with this crew and we will gain experience and lose. Not sure that is the worst scenario.

Cat and Mouse game. Some of the 7 fringe teams in the West competing for a Wildcard spot will likely make a move sooner than later to increase their chances. Edmonton is one. Calgary and LA two others. I think there is a deal or two coming soon.

Agreed, but they are adding.

That doesn't help the NYR'S.

We're not sellers.

Did anyone notice Kessel on the ice other than when the PP was out there and he was ripping shots from anywhere? The guy cant skate. He cant play defense. He was unnoticeable during even strength. Is he going to help us?

Unlikely. He's sub 1.0 GSVA this year.
