I don’t know if anyone really benefits from debating where this team is now compared to being third worst in the league.

That debate essentially comes down to a handful of loser points.

Otherwise the difference is effectively negligible.

That 9-1 stretch where Hank stole games early in the year is a huge outlier. Take that away, and the Rangers are at the bottom of the barrel. This might cost the team a good player in the draft. Just need to finish bottom 6.

Not how it works

Yeah, actually it is. The rules are the same as they were for the Vegas draft.

Rules for 2017 Expansion Draft

iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.

Any goalie under contract or RFA with a QO can satisfy the exposure requirement.

* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

Shesterkin will be a 2nd year professional. Next year is his 1st year, the draft year will be his 2nd.

This article shows a list of NMC players for each team:

The 2021 NHL expansion draft: What to know about the Blackhawks and Seattle

How does Chicago’s protection list stack up to the rest of the NHL?
Again, this is super early but only the Penguins and Stars match the Blackhawks with four players based on NMCs.
Dtlp6nzWwAAR5kn.jpg
Notice that neither Hank nor Staal are on this list. That's because their contracts are expiring in the year of the draft, so their NMCs don't matter.
Here's an article that specifically talks about how NMCs are handled for the purpose of the expansion draft:
https://thehockeywriters.com/expansion-draft-rules-gain-clarity/
Teams will be required to protect any players on contract carrying a NMC, and they will count against the number of players that the team is allowed to protect.
But according to reports from Chris Johnston and Elliotte Friedman, players whose contract expires on July 1 will not need to be protected if they have a no move clause.

Fast Namestnikov and Vesey should be the 3 guys that have to be moved somehow this summer. I’d take literally anything for them and not regret it at all. I just want their roster spots and cap space open.

I mean I’m serious I’d take 7th rounders if it came down to it.

I think you trade Fast. It would be a better early than late trade. There will be demand for him.

Zuccarello got us a 2nd with conditional things attached to it, I doubt Fast gets us a 3rd,in that vein I'd prefer to keep him than move him for a mid pick.

Depending on cap and term I'd prefer to keep Namestnicov and Fast for our 3rd and 4th line than trade them for scraps. Vesey I'm done with.

Blasphemy to state Tavares is hurting the Leafs roster.
In a cap league it’s not as black and white as that. I believe what RB was stating, was that in the context of his cap and term, was it a smart signing? Of course Tavares is a tremendous asset to TML but if they can’t sure up their D or keep a young player, it is an honest discussion.

Zucc got us a 2nd and 3rd which can both become 1sts. Dallas gave up more than Ranger fans think.

Fast could easily get a third.

Zuccarello is on a different planet skill wise, my point was that I'm doubtful we could get anything of value compared to just keeping him. I was happy with the Zuc return and I still think he will sign with them as well guess I probably should have used a different example.

no they are. i get that i really do.

this rebuild is going to be painful because we have little to no legit higher end talent on this team save for perhaps 5 players. the farm is painfully thin. the draft is a start but its not going to be enough.

theres an enormous amount of work to do here and its not going to happen quickly.

i continue to believe JG may not have the patience ( or time) for a 3-5 yr rebuild.

i still believe this organization lacks the backbone to stay the course

well see
Honest question, what are u basing this off of? Just the NYR of the past? I have the same fear but feel it’s unfounded given what Gorton has done (is doing) so far.

Again not arguing here just curious a to the basis of your statement.

I honestly feel the build is actually moving faster than expected with the additions of Lemieux and Strome, the emergence of DeAngelo and Howden(early on and of late), Buchnevich and Zibanajad taking the next step and Georgiev proving he is a real goalie. I dont think Gorton will go back to the old rangers ways because I dont think he is going to have to. I believe this team with the offseason additions will be competitive next year but not good enough to be tempted to add at the deadline. Another year of drafting and trades like last year and we will be kicking on the playoff door imo

This is not how you run an NHL franchise.

The one thing I would like to see ny do is to call up Ryan Gropp, play him with Kreider and Zibanajad until the end of the year and see if playing with better players is what he needs. I cant get a read on him playing in Hartford, would be a shame if he moved on and was a better player than he showed in Hartford.

I think the team always tries to win and the notion of criticizing that for the sake of draft positioning is ludicrous. These guys are professionals that rely on their performances to get paid. I feel just fine with them giving 100%, or whatever they have left at this point, every game. The results are the results.

Quinn should be fired for not challenging Buchnevichs goal, was a clear hook on Kreider! ;)

This is sort of bern-ish. Why would Quinn move Buch off that line right now?

Because the season doesnt matter, we already know that's a good line for next year. We have no idea if Gropp's issues are his own or if they are due to poor linemates and we should figure that out with the remaining games that mean nothing. I mean he is 22 now, this would be the ideal time to do it.

I think that’s a grossly over-simplified version of what people are annoyed about.

Gropp has demonstrated next to nothing. I would much rather Buchnevish continue to evolve and develop the rapport with Zbad.

Not to mention that I don't think 5 games of Gropp being comically over matched in first line minutes would tell us anything particularly beneficial lol.

Nobody does anything in Hartford, there is absolutely nobody there to play with. 5 games isnt gonna make or break Buch at this point, I'd much rather know if Gropp was any good or not, you cant tell from playing in Hartford. Some players need to play with high level players.

That's an opinion, we won't know until we try. Would be thoroughly embarrassing if we let him walk after next year without giving him a chance and he pops 25 on a different team. Hartford is a waste of time right now, bad team, bad players, bad mojo. He might need to play with higher level players. He was progressing well in the WHL and over a point a game, he only regressed after getting to Hartford. Is it him? The team? His linemates? I'm guessing its him but I'd like to find out for sure.
