this organization needs to follow a simple plan if they really want to rebuild and emerge competitive.

develop the young kids in the system now and hope they earn real minutes.

draft even better talent to develop further but make sure they are faster, smarter and more talented.

let the young vets lead by example now like 76, 93, 20 etc.

dump the vets who are passengers um.... we know who they are

and eventually, when the core is established and the light is visible at the end of the long dark tunnel, thats when you sign targeted FA's to supplement and add that couple of players that will make a difference between competitive and having a real chance.

thats it.

but thats 3 years away sadly.

Fox, if the kids skating sucks, I don't see why we would continue contemplating getting him.

No team in the NHL needs two Pionks. No offense to Pionk.

edit: I have to be more fair, Pionk's skating is good. No team needs a bad skating defenseman.

It was Columbus and got a snap-no.

Thinking Lundqvist will retire early is super-wishful thinking. He was not a soft negotiator on his deal and that was for a reason. 5.5M in real money in his last year is way too much to walk from.

Just to be clear, I am not saying Hank would retire early, or should be traded. In fact, I think he is the type of professional to help take a young guy under his wing and help him out.

I just think "we" are being naive if we don't think management considered moving on from Hank again this year (last year was well documented), and he affirmed his position he wanted to be a ranger- whether they went through the hoopla of official requests to waive NMC or just said "what if...".

Excellent. Colorado is one of those teams who should 100% be in on Panerin, maybe even Dallas, FLA, and Calgary. Not, NYR.

Build the core. Extabl;ish who we are keep ing to develope. In a few years, after everything shakes out, package extras or sign UFA's for top teir talent that fills a hole.

In the salary cap era, maximizing ELC and 2nd contract talent is the key to competing. Veteran skilled players have become the new role players you fill in your line-up with according to your cap space.

I think even if the rangers add panarin and Hughes...they're still a bottom 3 team in the league next year.

Maybe, but assuming Hughes is even just a 2nd line forward we'd have a pretty nice top-6, which is a tremendous improvement from now. It'd be like adding Hayes and Zucc back to the team, or even better.

They’re really bad....
They are right now..

Team was gutted and their defense has been suspect the past 2 years. I'd expect Gorton to bring some change in the personnel, which will be led my a new coach

They're not even a bottom 3 team this year how would they be expected to be that next year if they added two likely first line players?

And since I know it'll be asked here are the 1st overall forwards the last 10 years

52 pts in 82 games
69 pts in 82 games
48 pts in 45 games
63 pts in 82 games
31 pts in 48 games
52 pts in 62 games
42 pts in 65 games
54 pts in 82 games
46 pts in 79 games

So yes, Hughes is likely giving you at worst borderline first line production.

Yeah, especially if Gyorg continues improving.

We’d be closer to a bubble team I’d think.

I don’t know if anyone really benefits from debating where this team is now compared to being third worst in the league.

That debate essentially comes down to a handful of loser points.

Otherwise the difference is effectively negligible.

I think we have passed rock bottom if you will, the coach has taught this team to compete for each other. I like that, now we just need to fill the rest of the roster out. As much as people speculate I doubt Kreider is getting moved next year, it appears as though he is too important to the chemistry of the team and more importantly the top line. A lot can happen between now and opening day, I'm happy Sather isnt in the gm seat and I believe Gorton will continue to add talent to the roster be it through drafting, trades, or even free agency. I'm liking this rebuild so far, the games are still watchable and the players are learning. L

I don't agree with the sentiment that Boyle helps anything and in fact he blocks another kid from playing useful minutes for NY.
Howden or Boyle on the 4th line is a no brainer for this fan. I'll take Howden thanks even after hitting the "wall" he is just 21. Boyle is 34 years old, let him play somewhere for a run at the cup.
With Staal, Smith, Kreider and Shat there is plenty of veteran presence.
I understand the attraction and that Boyle could probably be deal at the trade deadline for another asset, but I'd prefer Lias & Howden compete for those spots in the lineup. Not handing it to Boyle because he signs a contract.
I know the issue is that Lias and Brett need to earn their minutes but with Chytil, Strome, Namestnikov and Boo there is enough pivot depth to cover in case either or both of Brett and Andersson don't impress and start in the AHL next season

I can’t believe people think this team doesn’t need some depth at forward.

We’ve played Brendan Smith at forward for large stretches this season, and you’re gonna tell me “the bottom 6 is fine”?

Yeah, sure.

@Mikos87 has mentioned this a few times and has absolutely nailed it. If we had more depth up front, maybe a guy who is clearly overmatched at the moment like Lias or Howden not too long ago could get pushed down to the minors where they can work on their game. Instead of getting fed ice time because Quinn doesn’t want to play Boo Nieves too much.

These kids need to feel the heat a little bit more. They know that the coach isn’t going to bench them for more than a game or two in favor of Smith/Nieves/Brickley. I can’t really blame Quinn for this given his options. It falls squarely on Gorton IMO, he needs to attack the tertiary market hard this summer.

Smith didn't look too bad at forward and isn't 34 years old.

When healthy NY has enough forwards

No worries, we don't agree on signing a UFA to play bottom 6minutes. I prefer a kid, clearly you don't

Yeah I’d prefer some random veteran play over Andersson or Howden  If that’s how you took my post then I don’t really know what to say.

so be specific

with over 72000 posts I don't think you have a problem posting right ?

specifically who do you think is an improvement ?
