Personally I’d rather overpay on a shorter deal for a mid-range Free Agent.

Give them their money up front, for less years, but not be married to anyone until we know what we have or don’t have.

But wheren’t those deals also awful last summer? Komarov and co.

Take on other team’s contracts instead. We have assets to give up. Skinner went for a 2nd and a 3rd. Eberle for Ryan Strome.

If a team want to get rid of a contract, there aren’t many teams out there that are willing to pay for it.

There will be teams looking to move contracts. I have no idea if it’s realistic, but let’s say that LAK wants to clear space and think that trading Tyler Toffoli is a good way to do it. What could LAK get for Toffoli on the trade market? STL might want to clear space by moving Brayden Schenn. Nashville by trading Mikael Granlund. Florida Hoffman. Saad in Chicago.

For example:
Jaden Schwarz has 34 pts in 60 games in STL. Two more years at 5.3m left. I don’t know STL has any interest in that, but if they want to clear cap space, moving him seems like an OK candidate. What would they get for him in a trade? Not much. Few teams have cap space.

If we feel that we need support for the kids on the ice, I rather give up what Buffalo did to get Skinner to get someone like that, like a Schwartz, like a Toffoli, Granlund, Hoffman, Schenn, instead of out-bidding everyone for UFAs. 1-2 year commitment instead of 7-8. Upside of the player turning it around.

Think it’s easier to make value positive moves that way.

I hate Nashville right now. Why can’t tale overtake Winnipeg in the division? How hard can it be? Winnipeg sucks right now, NSH even more so.

And if you want to go that route, talk to Anaheim about Cory Perry. Does he want to come here and do the same work as Shanahan did? Would Anaheim give him away? They have zero cap space. 2 years left on Perry, instead of 7 of Panarin.

Is there a middle ground here where you add 2-3 vets on mid level shorter term deals? I don't see why it's "you can't just play all teenagers" or "you need to lock Panarin into a monster contract." I can get behind the former, but not the latter. How many long term free agent contracts have worked out for this team since 2000? How long until this team has a realistic opportunity to compete? I don't see any sense in tying up future cap space with the hope that Panarin defies age in the future or can hopefully be moved in his mid 30s while making 11 million per while we bank on the cap continuing to grow. I just see poor long term planning here so that the team will be easier to watch the next few years.

Maybe in that scenario I’d rather sign a Spezza or a Brassard for a year or 2 as a stop gap. Unless teams are giving us extra assets/value to take on an unwanted contract or to shed salary.

Think of what the Rangers did coming out of the lockout in 05 with Nylander/Straka/Shanny along those lines.

I wouldn't mind overpaying a Hagelin and/or Boyle on one year deals. Hard workers, good character, and have some value at the deadline if you decide to go that route. You could always sign another McQuaid type as a 6/7 as well.

We have enough useless old defensemen... Just let the kids compete... If they can't cut it im sure 4th line winger Brendon Smith will switch back to D

What makes Panarin a leader? Nothing. Just because he is older doesn’t make him a leader. He hasn’t scored a goal in 11 games. One goal in the last 16 games. He looks disinterested for some reason. His team is trying to make the playoffs and he looks lost. There was a play in the third period last night. Columbus is trailing 2-1. Columbus really needs to win the game. He has the puck at center ice. He just froze. He waited too long to pass the puck. All of his options are gone. He passes the puck to no one and the Oilers picked it off. $11M bucks.

This is the guy to help lead the Rangers? His current team can really use him to show some effort. Ridiculous. It’s not just last night. This has been going on for a while. Panarin isn’t a lead dog. He is a secondary level player on a championship team. He is Kessel.

The Rangers should sign a free agent or two when the timing is right. The team is awful. Gorton has so much work to do with this franchise. Not now. He made his job more difficult with his Shattenkirk and Smith signings.

Gorton needs to move Kreider this summer. Get a good deal and move on from him. He suffered a hamstring injury against Tampa after the trading deadline. They used that as his excuse. He didn’t do much in the previous two months before the injury. Mike and Zuccarello carried that line for 5 weeks. He started feeling better last week but he still looks bad. He plays one shift per game and disappears. Kreider has a new lower body injury now. Wonderful. More excuses. Everyone keeps waiting for Chris to be something he isn’t.

Kreider will get 5 years/$35 million or 6 years/$39M. He isn’t worth that contract. He looked like a shoo-in to score 30 goals or more this season. He scored his 20th goal on December 30 in game #37. He has 6 goals since then. The Rangers have 9 games left. The Rangers should not play him if he is hurt.

I’m game for that approach as well.

I understand, some of those names were pretty suspect, but preferably we could find someone that has a positive upside for us. Jaden Schwartz is that type of kid for me. Someone that might be a fit here semi longterm, ‘turnaround’ case.

Zero interest in Perry. That would be just dead weight for us. Even if he could stay healthy, his production has fallen off significantly.

Is there another fanbase more obsessed with Bringing back former players than ours?
I live for it :thumbu:

But for real, depending on price i would be happy with any one of Hagelin/Boyle/Brassard. They all have been in winning environments throughout their career, but more importantly their careers all got going here in NY when they were still young. They know what it takes to make it here. It really would have more to do with that than it does nostalgia. Again it would have to be good value for us. Hags can still skate and provide incredible defense/PK.

Exactly, Staal and Shatty need to help the younger players. Bringing more vets in to mentor just cuts into playing time.

Kreider has always had a problem with consistency. He doesn't show up to play every day. That's a large part of the reason he's never really broken out. For example, this year on Fridays in 8 games he has 0 points. In his career on Fridays he only has 18 points in 46 games which is by far his worst. He might be too busy planning his night out after the game instead of focusing. I'm not really sure but how else do you explain it? Yet at the same time he's absolutely dominant on Saturdays historically. 35-37-72 in 97 games. That's almost like he's not even the same guy. I don't really get it but you would like to see more consistency on a per day basis for him to really be a 30 goal 60 point guys.

If it hasn't happened by now, it's not going to happen.

i have no interest in Panarin. Nothing about him screams winning player to me.
