Personally I’d rather overpay on a shorter deal for a mid-range Free Agent.
Give them their money up front, for less years, but not be married to anyone until we know what we have or don’t have.
But wheren’t those deals also awful last summer? Komarov and co.
Take on other team’s contracts instead. We have assets to give up. Skinner went for a 2nd and a 3rd. Eberle for Ryan Strome.
If a team want to get rid of a contract, there aren’t many teams out there that are willing to pay for it.
There will be teams looking to move contracts. I have no idea if it’s realistic, but let’s say that LAK wants to clear space and think that trading Tyler Toffoli is a good way to do it. What could LAK get for Toffoli on the trade market? STL might want to clear space by moving Brayden Schenn. Nashville by trading Mikael Granlund. Florida Hoffman. Saad in Chicago.
For example:
Jaden Schwarz has 34 pts in 60 games in STL. Two more years at 5.3m left. I don’t know STL has any interest in that, but if they want to clear cap space, moving him seems like an OK candidate. What would they get for him in a trade? Not much. Few teams have cap space.
If we feel that we need support for the kids on the ice, I rather give up what Buffalo did to get Skinner to get someone like that, like a Schwartz, like a Toffoli, Granlund, Hoffman, Schenn, instead of out-bidding everyone for UFAs. 1-2 year commitment instead of 7-8. Upside of the player turning it around.
Think it’s easier to make value positive moves that way.
