It's a bit early to think about the offseason and UFA's for me. Right now I'm just rooting hard for Tampa and Dallas to nab us some extra first rounders, and for Winnipeg to lose in the first 2, all while supporting the tank for a top 3 lottery pick.

That's where I'm at right now. After I see who we draft and what positions have strengthened I'll have stronger feelings on guys like Panarin.

Not likely to change my tune on Kreider though unless a colossus offer comes in.

I agree but I won't dare... I'd be very happy if they signed Panarin. I think he would be a great addition to whats happening around here long term especially with the influx of Russian youth about to come over. Then again, I'm in the minority in thinking this rebuild isn't going to take as long as some think.
It's definitely not going to be done for the next several years. As such, is it really sound strategy to pay Panarin max dollars and max year to have him wait for the Rangers to be come competitive? And what kind of Panarin are you going to be paying the rest of the contract?

Trading Zibadejad:
Pro: Most likely as his max value, should net us some really nice things
Con: Why trade a 26 year old 1C on a really good contract. He is young to be with us on the other side of the rebuilt.

Trading Kreider:
Pro: Very inconsistent. Still has not scored 30 goals a season. Next contract will be expensive. Might be a bit to old for the rebuilt.
Should net some very good assets if we trade him.
Con: Elite possesion player. Physical freak. Unique player in the league. Maybe best homegrown wing since Kovalev.

Signing Panarin:
Pro: Will not cost any assets beside cap-space. An elite winger. Low mileage despite age. Wants to play in a place like NYC.
Should last trough rebuilt.
Con: Will cost a lot of cap space. Rest of team is not ready yet. Adding pressure of competing sooner then later.
If he ages bad or rebuilt drags out, his contract will become an anchor when we compete.

For me, I'll keep Z and trade Kreider. Would not sign Panarin as I feel a big UFA is not the right thing to do at this time.
A bunch of prospects may take massive strides the next year, and I'll look like a fool at this time next year.
I'll rather just go for caution at this stage. Leadership will be needed, but I rather go for a Williams/Cullen time
of graybeard then overpaying Kreider to lead this rebuilt.

It's funny to me that this thread continues to be about who the Rangers will trade, trade for, sign as a free agent, etc. Times have changed.

The Rangers are going to live and die for the foreseeable future with the players drafted in the last 2 drafts and this upcoming draft. It's never been clearer that this is how the Rangers intend to build the roster.

I think some see Panarin as a player that you can absolutely build around and not one that comes a long too often via FA. The analogy of a house being built can be interpreted differently... you can argue that a player like Panarin can be seen as part of the infrastructure like electricity and is needed from the start. And the roof can be seen as those deadline deals for a veteran or two to put you over the top to win it all.

It’s not as much of a minority thought as you think.

But I don’t know how anyone can look at the current team and come to that conclusion. They’re realllly bad

Sure but list the rebuilt NHL teams who didn't sign or trade for any significant players on their roster.

Same for me.

From Gorton's perspective it's probably time to discuss approaches in different draft or trade outcomes scenarios (if they are talking to other GMs) but there's no way they have a set in stone approach at this juncture.

We should get some better defensive coaching. Quinn is fine with big picture and stuff, but Ruff is a disaster.

Coaching can make such a difference even with an underwhelming D corps. Just look at the Islanders. They went from worst defensive team to the best just by changing their coaching staff. They give up an absurdly low amount of scoring chances so it’s not even necessarily just insane goaltending, the goalies have been good but they’re definitely benefiting from the great team defense too.

Not saying I expect the Rangers to be the best D team in the league next year with the same players, but the Islanders are perfect example of how much a difference coaching can make. Ruff is a disaster, sure they D corps sucks as far as talent, but theres no reason they shouldn’t be able to play a better system to cut down on scoring chances and stuff.

So who is ready for Spooner part deuce?
We can reaquire him on 16. November 2019. If we are to retain on Kreider and possible Shattenkirk and Smith we need Spooner back.
Hopefully he suck as much for Van next season as he did in Edm so we can get him back free or even get a pick with him.
Stick him in Hartford for the rest of the season.
