Here is an interesting toss-out.

What about Jesperi Kotkaniemi?

Not saying Carolina didn't want him but part of their offer sheet for him was definitely a revenge motive against Montreal for the Aho offer sheet.

Meanwhile Kotkaniemi is averaging a career high 0.50 ppg while playing bottom 6 minutes. He's like their 10th or 11th highest average time on ice forward. And yet he's producing.

Clearly he's kinda a luxury for them. Even if their plan is to eventually let Trocheck and Staal go, they have Aho and Necas ahead of him at center, and they have tons of other young forwards like Jarvis, Svechnikov, Teravainen, and guys in the minors too, like Rees, Bock, Drury, and Suzuki.

I wonder if that could be an interesting buy-low option for the Rangers. Probably not at the deadline since we'll be in competition with them, but in the offseason? He'll be an expiring contract so we'd be trading for his rights.

I think he'll re-sign in Carolina. There have been rumors that the extension is already agreed upon.

The belief is that there is an extension "in the drawer" for him in Carolina.

Maybe true. Maybe not true. But that's just been a tagline for people trying to defend the bad offersheet decision.

Producing 0.50 ppg despite bottom 6 minutes make him an attractive target if he can be acquired reasonably in trade.

Seravelli was on with Marek today:
- Still ties AG to Edmonton
- Says NYR will be "pretty frisky". Could be looking for 2 forwards. They are in on JT Miller. Have called Chicago on Ryan Carpenter (GG had Carpenter in Vegas).
- Rangers have called on lehkonen, but says a ton of teams are after him.
I appreciate you always throwing out these radio hits like this.

AG is going to Edmonton for 97!

The Rangers have 3, maybe 4 with Robertson, blue-chip defensemen. That’s beyond Fox, Lindgren and Miller and not even mentioning Trouba. Why are the Rangers emptying the cupboard for another D? Just wait it out and see how these kids develop another season. It’s very possible the team can fill the entire bottom pairing with kids on ELC’s who also develop into another 2nd pairing as early as next year.
Are we talking prospects here? I like our guys but no way do the Rangers have 3/4 blue chip D prospects.

Schneider is the only one I feel confident in saying is a 100% bonafide blue chip guy on defense. The rest of them are all good/great prospects but I feel like calling them blue chippers is a bit of hyperbole

Lundkvist is 100% a blue chip prospect. He was one of the best defensive prospects on the planet just last year.

Not a fan of Gallant's habit of going for the "known quantities". That's how we ended up with Tinordi I'm pretty sure. I get it, some people are like that - they dislike novelties and prefer what is familiar, but personally I prefer being open to new ideas and more creativity.

Also surprised the Rangers are in on JT Miller after trading him, but again, a known quantity. Maybe Drury is similar in that regard.

I don’t see how Ryan Carpenter improves this roster.

So you're anti Ryan Reaves b/c GG had him in Vegas?

You'd also be against a move for Reilly Smith on the same basis?

No, but if having to know your targets is the only option you limit your options.
