If Chychrun is "100%" an all star caliber player how come he hasn't made any all star games in his first like 6 years in the league?

He's not an All Star caliber player. At 23 years old, he might become one, but at this stage he's a solid second pair defender who might be a top pair defender someday or at least would look good next to a Norris caliber defender.

I understand the biggest appeal about him is that he's under contract at a very affordable rate which would be important to us, but we have even more affordable players on ELCs so I'm not really in that much of a hurry on that front.

You can say "these things matter," but I'm left questioning why it matters to us. So if we can get an Eichel type as long as he wants out for the same price, I'll just wait till I find that player. Or I'll wait till the next Mark Stone becomes available that I can get for one of my many Erik Brannstrom level defensive prospects.

That is what is more important to this franchise.

If Chychrun's situation is so different than an Eichel or a Trouba, I still do not see why the Rangers then must be forced to pay those exhorbitant higher prices. Just wait for the next Eichel or Trouba situation.

Frankly looking at this I'm thinking Chychrun is getting terribly overvalued here and I suspect he'd be another big name we are importing that is a non-elite let down, just like Trouba has been.

I agree with you but eh ASG is not an argument. Panarin hasn't ever made it and Shesterkin didn't this year.

Chychrun would be a franchise cornerstone type player for the Rangers. If they can get him without giving anything up off the main roster (sans Nemeth) I’m game

Theoretically, what does McDavid cost?

Forget the shipping out salary part.....

Chytil, Kakko/Laf, KAM and a 1st?

He's been a top pairing defenseman or close to it the last 3 years based on the same player card you just posted. Plus he's 23 and on a contract that is below market value. He's a much better asset than Trouba was when he was on the block for comparison based on that alone.

The card says he's at market value, not below.

His GSVA's have him as a second pair defender in 18-19 and 19-20 and a low end first pair in 20-21, before regressing to a borderline 2nd/3rd pair guy this year.

I'm not saying GSVA is the be-all, end-all nor am I saying this is the only year that matters.... but I'm not giving up that much more than I gave up for Jacob Trouba, who if anything was trending up when we got him.

And since we have a cupboard full of defenders, I'm not sure we even need to pay over market for him. We paid that Trouba price before we knew what we had in Fox, before we had Schneider or Robertson, and I think Miller and Lundkvist were either barely drafted or not yet drafted.

That is worth emptying the war chest. You give up Nils and Vitali but you've just cemented the hardest hole on your team to fill for the next 10 years. You will never need to rent to fill top 6 center again. Every player you put next to him will now be playing with a 70 point center. This is the spot that you need to hold your assets in reserve to fill.

Once you have him you are golden. He's your 1C if Mika declines, and then it's a lot easier to find a 2C behind Pettersson later since you have dynamic wings in Kakko and Laf. If Mika says good then you have one of the best 1-2 punches in the league down the middle.

That should be the target. Once you fill that hole then you can rent till your hearts content with all your extra pieces.

I'm very concerned about his physical make up.

At 23, hes done growing and is playing at 6'2" and just about 175.

Hes going to be someone that misses a lot of time due to injury.

This will be, if he doesn't get hurt, that he will have played a full season.

Thats concerning.

Talent is there (although he's having a shit year this year)

You are kidding yourself if you think the leading goal scorer amongst dmen who plays on the worst team in the league wasn't making it. Every team must have a player.

If you don't want Chychrun, that's fine. I don't think he's a fit either. Making up nonsense like that just makes you look stupid.

I actually like Chychrun, I'm just resigned to having to argue against paying an all-star center package for him when he's not even an All Star.

It looks like in voting he was 10th. That's hardly confidence inspiring. Ok, say he makes the team... it doesn't change my opinion much just because "every team must have a player."

What you said is exactly my point. I don't see the fit. Why would I give up two of my best assets?

If the package is Nils plus an add that doesn't break the bank, that's basically a one - for - one long term swap. Arizona does it to save salary and re-set the rebuild clock.

But if there's a bidding war it doesn't make sense for the Rangers, really, at least not before they've addressed their other long term needs at forward.

The winning bid would be probably the biggest package in league history, bigger than the Lindros return.

Either that, or you start with Adam Fox and keep adding

McDavid is not attainable until he makes it clear he wants out, at which point, he's probably fetching a four asset package like most stars do, but then plus a substantial premium.

Still, it won't be as high as everyone thinks, because gutting your team for McDavid leaves you right back where the Oilers are and no one will want that.

Would anyone include Fox in a McDavid deal? I think I would depending on who else is involved.
No, and you wouldn't have to. If McDavid gets traded it's because he requests a trade and then his value is impacted by that. The plan would be to add McDavid to Fox and not cut out one leg while fixing another. Not to say he's not worth that, but the Rangers can't give up Fox.

I posed this question in the around the nhl thread, and it's a fantasy land question, but what does a deal look like if the Rangers got a third team to hold say 25% of his salary.

Oilers: Kakko or Laf, Chytil, Miller, Othman, Georgiev, 1st 2023, 1st 2024, 2nd 2025
Arizona: 2nd 2022 (lower of the two), 3rd 2023, 3rd 2024, 4th 2025
Rangers: McDavid @ 75%

Again, Fantasy land stuff, but an interesting what-if.

The Rangers have 3, maybe 4 with Robertson, blue-chip defensemen. That’s beyond Fox, Lindgren and Miller and not even mentioning Trouba. Why are the Rangers emptying the cupboard for another D? Just wait it out and see how these kids develop another season. It’s very possible the team can fill the entire bottom pairing with kids on ELC’s who also develop into another 2nd pairing as early as next year.
