Gallant knows that Shesterkin is the #1 and George is the #2, but I always thought that if you have a back to back, playing your backup when the team is more rested would be the better play. Let Shesterkin come in fresh in the 2nd game and be able to carry the team if he needs to. The team can carry George if he sucks tonight.

This is a 4 point game against a tough in division opponent, with Pitt about to be 1 point shy of you once they beat CBJ tonight, and you DONT start your Vezina candidate goalie who has absolutely been on fire? Inexcusable on all accounts. Just another example why the current head coach of the Rangers got left on the side of the road.

It's a built in excuse.

Not playing your best player and team MVP is dumb. There's no spinning it.
I refuse to believe he is starting Geo so he has a built in excuse. That is just unprofessional.
- is his M.O. to start his 1st string in every second game of a back to back? Just what he does?
- is it to motivate the team to tighten up against a superior elite opponent?
- is it just Geo's turn on the calendar? So don't look into it too much?
- or is it just that there is a more likely chance we lose tonight regardless of who is in net, so start your brick wall against the shit team guaranteeing the 2 points and roll the dice against the juggernaut?

Shesterkin should be able to play the Coyotes after no rest and one arm tied behind his back. There is no excuse for this.

that's overthinking and over analyzing.

You put your best players on the ice against one of the top teams. You play your backup against Arizona.

It just "feels" like Turk is ceding the game. Like "lets just make sure we beat Arizona to get the guaranteed points."
What other "top" team does this? Do other coaches do this shit?
No, a real NHL coach would not make the decisions that this one makes.

I am trying to figure out what Gallant is doing. So you are saying HE is overthinking and over analyzing? Because clearly he doesn't agree with your simple strategy.

It really is. Those are two of our foremost pieces.

They should both be untouchable but for being swapped for other long term core pieces we need at different positions, ie center.
The rub here is you can get 100c on the dollar when you trade for a rental. A long term top 6 young C is likely to cost 150c to 250c on the dollar, which is a lot harder to stomach.

If you're willing to empty the clip on a 24-26 year old 50-60 point C you can probably do that, but at what cost? It's not gonna be Nils, Edstrom, and a 2nd. It's gonna be 4 "prime" pieces. You willing to trade that for a Bo Horvat?

We are where we are because of Shesty. We're playing an offensive force.... going with Georgie is a loser mentality IMO.

Same reason he took Kakko off the Panarin line after they caught fire. Just flat out dumb moves.

That might be it, but lets see what he does next week. We have another one B2B, CBJ > Minny. Minny is very good, does he start Geo against CBJ and let Igor take the 2nd game against the better opp?

Pitt can realistically (and should) win about another 6 in a row as they go through another run of the weak teams in the league. We need to keep our pace to hold them off.

My bad on the “4”, but would you describe them as big name rentals?

Honestly, I don’t think they are a good example of a team succeeding by trading for big name rentals. (a) They weren’t rentals. (b) They aren’t “big names”.

Neither has ever scored 40 pts in the NHL. Weren’t they the classic example of a team adding depth and grit at the deadline?
I agree neither are top line rental players, but they paid top line rental player prices for both and Goodrow was used as a top 6 player last year, so it wasn't something to completely ignore either

This is a comical overreaction to a goalie choice in a regular season game.
It really isn’t. It’s a gigantic tactical error. And it’s not the first time he’s made it. When your back to back game is the Coyotes at home, you don’t hold your Vezina nominee goalie back for that. It’s dumb and again this is now the third time this season Gallant has misplayed his goalies.

Or Geo REALLY wants the start for ancillary reasons and this is a players coach who was a player himself showing confidence in his guys.

This is how you build trust in the room. I like it.

I think this may be a message to the team that they have to be able to go toe-to-toe with a powerhouse, a game after Shesterkin saved our asses in a game against the leafs. They can't rely on him in every big game. This used to be a habit- team would play a lot harder in front of Valiquette or Biron or Pavelec.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like the most logical justification for this allocation of the BTB games.
