The only way Hertl COULD fit is if Strome leaves (not an ideal scenario) or Kreider is traded (not ideal either).

I'll say this. I COULD see a scenario where the team as a whole thinks a lineup of:

Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Hertl-Strome
Barron-Goodrow-Blais
Hunt-Rooney/Barron-Reaves

Would make more sense then:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Kaako
Panarin-Strome-Blais
Lafreniere-Goodrow-Barron
Hunt-Rooney-Reaves

If that were the scenario Drury was driving to, I could see it. Hertl would provide much needed 2-way play and a shooter mentality to that line. Push Strome to wing and he provides a 5th center if an injury occurs. This also allows Lafreniere top-6 time.

I mean, that would possibly be smart roster management, though I would not like the fact that Hertl is already going to be 29 as well, but if you are getting something back for Kreider (maybe a future center? Like a Newhook?) then that's not horrendous.

I'm not quite sure that both Hertl and Strome are affordable even with moving Kreider though. Maybe.

Why I've lamented endlessly that we cut all this short too early. It's only going to get harder from here on out. The easy time to finish off this rebuild was trading Kreider for the Stars package, trading Buch for the Kings package, and probably trading Strome. Sure, this team would be a fringe playoff contender right now, but all this whining about "having to win for our first core," would be put to bed, because that core would be Panarin, who is going to be playing at a high level forever, and Zibanejad, and that's basically it. We would be straight up loaded for the future.

Well people are asking me what we should do and then when I point out the kind of things we should do, I get accused of beating a dead horse.

I don't know what packages are available. Get on the phone and find one similar to the kind we passed on. That's what I'm saying.

Instead of trading everything for Hertl or Pavelski or Giordano.

That's the answer. It's not beating a dead horse, it's citing precedential deals that were offered as an answer to a direct question.

If your answer for what we should do is to keep quoting hypothetical trades that didn't happen, how is that addressing what to do moving forward? Those trades either weren't real or maybe only proposed by the Rangers. For all you know the rumors are incorrect or the Kings & Dallas laughed at the offers & hung up. Regardless, you keep bringing those deals up as if they can still help the team moving forward...news flash, they can't.

Time to rip off those f***ing bandaids.

Get McKegg the F out of here. He's worthless.

And you need exactly one of Hunt or Blais in the lineup, not both, and Reaves needs to be an extra for fight nights.
Reaves has earned being an everyday player. He's going to be Uber valuable in the playoffs. Agree that Hunt becomes redundant if/when Blais is healthy, though.

Disagreed on Reeves. 135 hits in 34 games. Inspires team hitting. Not a liability. Draws more penalties than he takes. IMO that’s value.

There is zero chance Schneider is being traded for Hertl
I think it depends on if management thinks we're truly in a window to win a cup or not. It would be a risky move, but if they truly believe that Hertl would put us over the top and they can get him extended for a package that includes Schneider, I wouldn't be shocked if they did it.

I mean, a problem with your stances is you are operating with perfect information and going back in time to fix current problems which may or may not exist in that particular space time continuum.

As for what packages are available, this is fantasyland on a messageboard. Let your freak flag fly. That's the whole point of the exercise. You want Lundell? Make a perfectly even value package to get Lundell. Failing that, make a package that will blow Florida out of the water to get Lundell. You have the whole league to choose from, doesn't have to be him. A big part of the disconnect is you are simultaneously clamoring for Tier 1 assets while being adamant that overpayment is verboten and acting like everyone else just doesn't get it and is somehow stupid. Uh, I'm pretty sure we'd all like to live our lives trading three quarters for a dollar. Help us find the dollar.

Can NMC contracts change or are we stuck with the player until the contract run out or bought out?

We have years upon years of evidence that stuffing a couple gritty mcgrits and a random face puncher in the 4th line/scratch rotation is not a winning formula. You need grit throughout the lineup, the odd rush line here or there excepted.

That is an AV team. We have seen that movie already.

I like the potential of Jones-Schneider a lot more than Nemeth-Lundkvist.

The only challenge I see is realizing the value we have in Lundkvist. Gorton loves him. Give him a call?

IMO, MTL has nothing I'd value on Lundkvist level. Certainly not a pick, unless Gorts loves him so much he'd trade MTL's unprotected 1st.

The team finds itself in a weird spot. They are near the top of the league, but still feel “early” in their window and potentially undeserving of their record based on some key underlying metrics.

They should be trying to compete in the playoffs this year, but not going all-in per se. I think you bolster the lineup with some depth, maybe add a Reilly level scorer, and see what happens. Make a big move in the off-season leveraging the additional data you gather in the playoffs this year.

I can’t help but think about how good this team would be if Kakko and Laf were the players we were promised.

o_O Strongly, strongly disagree with this sort of assertion.

Blais is a player who can add grit to a 2nd or 3rd line. His upside is a clean poor mans Tom Wilson. Hunt is a 4th line forechecking and energy player. They aren't the same, nor do they fill the same role. Just because Blais and Hunt are both wingers who like to hit people doesn't make them remotely the same. Blais has much much higher value, too. No team rolls out 11 finesse forwards and one token hitter.

When the Blues won in 2019, they had Maroon, Perron, Blais.
Lewis, Nolan and Clifford on LA in 2014.

Hunt-Rooney-Reaves was on fire when they were all playing together. I don't see any benefit in replacing Hunt's spot on that line that plays 9 minutes a game with Gettinger or Barron. Blais is gonna be in the top 9 next year.

This is the disconnect that makes people pine for Jason Robertson, a random ass 2nd rounder who is a PPG top line player while #1 overall and #2 overall play and produce like random ass 2nd rounders.

That's also what matters in taking next steps, not raging at the existence of Gregg McKegg (who the f*** cares jesus christ)

0% chance of that happening.

Exactly what i was saying on previous posts. Canadiens have legit NOTHING i want for nils. Unless it is Nic Suzuki. which we know isnt happening
