Hertl is 10x better than Strome as a Center. Hertl makes Strome a RW. Or it makes Strome the 3C if you get someone like Reilly Smith on the cheap
Strome isn't here if you trade for and re-sign Hertl, who isn't going to be making less than Zibanijad and will most likely be making more than that.

The team lacks at least one long term center and winger, if not two long term centers.

It can’t afford to part with young assets for rentals till that issue is resolved.

They need a 2C long term. It's extremely likely its going to be Strome and if not they probably will go hard after Hertl in free agency considering how much they clearly like him as a rental. A 23 year old, productive, top 6 center isnt going to just magically fall out of the sky and into the Rangers laps. Time to get realistic about where the team goes from here. Every reputable insider is telling us the Rangers will be active in the rental market. You may not like it, but its very likely whats going to happen

People can keep insisting on what the Rangers are gonna do; it doesn’t make what they are gonna do any less stupid.

And they don’t need to lock in Strome as their long term 2C; they need a young 2C who can eventually take over for Zibanejad as 1C once that salary is more palatable as a 2C center as it will be when the cap rises.

He doesn't need it. UFA season is silly season. Some team is giving him 9 million dollars at least to play center ice.
I think he would take $8 million per year to play in NY for the remainder of his career.

But would that be worth investing in with his history of knee problems?

That's the other issue too. And I'm certainly not comfortable giving someone a retirement contract with those knees.

If we end up needing to move Kreider after this year to make the cap work you have to imagine he's really increased his value this year.

Jarnkrok is another name Staple mentioned I’d be interested in

Chychurn would give the Rangers the best defense in the league, anyone who says he’s redundant doesn’t know what they’re talking about lol

The cap disagrees with you. It's too much of the same ingredient in a cake.

They need help at center.

Yeah I don’t get this either. He’s a tremendous player, 23 and signed long term on a bargain deal. You absolutely look into what it would take to bring him here.

The rub is his injury history. Not about him being “redundant”.

The top four is set and if Schneider keeps playing with no fear even with some warts and bumps, then Chychrun is in fact redundant.

We see it all the time. You give up good assets for injured players when you're not close, 99/100 moves like that cost you a championship.

I really don't understand what parts of accountability and consequences you seemingly can't grasp.

100%, all of it, in this context!

And honestly, I get a little pissed about this concept too. This guy has pros and cons, right. Add them up, and you get a low value. But still probably slight on the positive side for some teams. Here, the equation ends for me, no more parameters should be added.

But for many it doesn’t end there. They think it is their job to ensure that he is punished even further for his cons. Many will call out whomever contracts this player. Many think he shouldn’t get a contract even if he had value for someone. I don’t like that type of thinking at all.

The only truly untouchable players for me are Fox, Panarin, Shestyorkin, Lafrenière and Kakko. Every team in the league has at least 1 player I'd offer anyone else for in a package.

When I look at other teams to try to identify who I would trade K'Andre Miller for, I always ends up looking closer at names of players that are paid a ton already or is about to get paid a ton in the very near future.

His potential is undeniably tremendously high. He is good already despite not being perfect, but there is no reason to not expect him to improve steadily over like the coming 5-6 years, if not coming 10 years. But what makes him basically "untouchable" from my POV is that he is on an ELC for one more year, and after that probably can be locked up at a perfect rate, say 4-5m per, for say 5 years.
