If anything is to be learned from the Buchnevich situation, its that we must make better calls on which players should be offered a bridge deal and which players that should be signed to long term deals. Jeff Gorton signed a ton of players to bridge-deals, that with the benefit of hindsight, were terrible options compared to the value they would have provided if they had been long term deals.

Subban taking Blais out for the season compounded with kravtsov leaving again, and kakkos play/production while better, is still less then nearly everyone predicted.
That’s along with Buchs strong start and good chemistry with the all Russian line in the blues is what makes people miss him more.
It’s like a perfect storm of events at RW. Or Murphy’s Law, however you want to label it.
We all miss Buch. He was our guy. Drafted here, Developed here, and got better here. A great find in the 3rd rd for sure.
I def see why he’s much more beloved by everyone then Miller.
However, both guys weren’t getting extensions here. That’s just the facts of each players situation. They were both traded when they were.

Will Buch keep his strong play and PPG numbers up for an entire 82 game season plus playoffs? It remains to be seen. Certainly possible. But hasn’t done it yet.
Obviously when he was dealt, the winger market was affected by many different aspects. The more established player in Reinhart who had better #’s to date as he’s nearest comparable, really didn’t return a much better package in the same timeframe. We’re there more offers that were better that were still available?? Like the Kupari +conditional 1st?? Maybe who knows. Maybe when they signed Danault, they rescinded the offer.
Like I said, so many deals for guys are almost made in the offseason and especially at the draft, that go down to the wire and then don’t happen for whatever reason.

I’m just happy this team has the culture shifted and playing well. Hopefully we continue to do so and our young guys continue to get better.

Trading Buchnevich was the right call. Whether they do that in the 2021 off season or at the 2022 deadline was the discussion. None of those players you mention had expiring contracts in 2021 so they could have (and in my opinion should have) gone with the Hayes approach.

And when Drury decides to trade Buchenvich the moment the market opens up (July 23rd), the return better be worth it otherwise it looks like a rushed decision. And Blais+2nd is not a good return.

Trading Pavel Buchnevich: On board with that
Acquiring Sammy Blais: Good move, for sure

Just not paired together. You want Blais? Trade a prospect or a pick for him. But to get a bottom-6 winger and a 2nd rounder for a guy who had 75 points in his last 82 games is a garbage return.
The Rangers were never going to go into this season with the intention of trading Buchnevich at the deadline though. They went into this season hoping to make the playoffs. So what happens when you sign Buch to a 1 year deal and then the team is cooking and makes the playoffs and now you lose him for nothing or a pittance if trading his negotiating rights. Or you DO trade him at the deadline, with the team in a playoff spot, what kind of message does that send to the group? It was never going to happen.

This is a microcosm on why half measure rebuild/retools are Bull shit

Idk how you can deem this a half measure rebuild. We missed the playoffs for 4 straight years, sold off almost all of our older players with value, got rid of our longest tenured skater in Staal for nothing because he didn't fit anymore, bought out a franchise icon in Lundqvist to make room for our two young goalies, played the youngest roster in the league for a few years, made 9 first round draft picks across 5 drafts including a 1st overall and a 2nd overall, acquired a arguably generational talent who won the Norris in his second season as a 22 year old. Until the last week of last season this was being hailed as the model rebuild around the league and the example everyone was point to with rebuilding the right way.

The trade was essentially for a 2nd aaaanyway. How is the addition of Blais good? I wouldn't say is that exciting those 14 games. .They played with fire, knowing they were, and got scorched.

I agree. Pretty hard to argue with this assessment. Not everything has panned out as all had hoped for.
Some guys are taking a longer time to develop and make a consistent impact. Others aren’t playing where we expect them to be or even normally are in some cases.
But as a whole, you really can’t be too disappointed at this point in time.
I know some would have liked to wait longer, but after 4 seasons out of the playoffs, you don’t want that complacent losing culture to feaster too long. It’s very hard to get it turned around when that happens.
Are things perfect? No. Overall our team competes and doesn’t quit. Good coach, young core with some elites in shesty/Fox and hopefully others developing. The farm is also in good shape as well.
It might not be a top 5 prospect pool with all the recent graduates, but it’s hardly devoid on young talent that should come up and make an impact in 2-3 years time when we’re going to need them to.
I’d love to have 1-2 more real good young prospects. Especially if 1 was a center.
But overall in the long term, we have more pieces here then we are missing to be a long term contender for the next 5-7 years...

Why the short post?

whats Hajek ?

let’s throw in Kravtsov for Studnika too !
Hell....

OR....we could just make a play for Bergeron ! We have the picks /prospects and Chytil to offer up . I'm not sure of the combo that would be needed . We would also have to sign him a 2-3 year deal . Likely be 20-24? million and find a way to fit him in next season[move CK ?] and the next and let him go back to Btown in his last year . Hopefully by then he hoists a Cup like Messier did .

Bruins and Rangers have made some deals before.....and Raymond B went to Avs . Orr moved....Espo moved ....Bruins do not care . They bring the guys back like McQuaid now a coach . Bergeron could return 3 potential skaters for them in the near future. They will be listening .

Bergeron could be that guy that brings Lafreniere/Gauthier/Blais along.....a new French Connection Line and hopefully by then we have drafted/developed a quality C . I think he is the best older player not named Crosby out there that is obtainable without us selling the farm to get him and gets us a crack at 3-4 playoff runs . His experience is invaluable and his work on the dot we all know is great . Above all else....the guy is a WINNER.

Boston doesn't have much in their pipeline at all. Senyshyn and Studnicka are trending bust. So is Beecher. TBH the only guy I like in their system right now is Lohrei.

Gotta think they will be treating these next 2-3 years with Bergeron and Marchand as their last shots before a rebuild.

Like I mentioned ....the Bruins likely are listening right now on Bergeron . They have never been scared to look ahead and that is something you have to do these days in a Cap league . The teams that do that will always be ahead of the pack. Sweeny would have to be given a green light on it though . It's his job .

I’d take Studnika

does Reaunaen have any value ?

isn’t he on Carolina so not likely going anywhere?

UFA at year’s end. I think part of the reason for why they went after Kotkaniemi was to have a replacement in place.

A capable center like Trochek will always get paid and for a team that have afforded itself the luxury of a boat load of expensive vets like we have, going after a UFA makes very little sense. But he does tic a lot of boxes.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to connect the dots between the Buch trade and all this cap space we have this year? It’s like they planned a follow on trade (ahem, Eichel) that didn’t come to fruition.

It remains strange that they have all of this I utilized space this far into the season.
