Just because we're not the 'top cup favorites', doesn't mean it's can't happen. You're treating a low% chance as impossible. It's not impossible... The chances are actually pretty good considering we haven't made the playoffs in years.

This feels like a gap year for a flawed team to win the Cup. The most solid team is probably Carolina but they are no juggernaut just yet. Tampa is diminished, Florida has a strong offense but the D is suspect and leaks goals. Get into the playoffs and if your goalie gets hot, who knows what happens.

And re: the whole “no more selling for futures,” logic….

This is why they say you can’t rebuild in NYC. It’s this lack of patience. Too many fans embody it.

You have to win trades. Don’t overpay. Don’t overpay by retaining an asset you could win a trade for.

No hard and fast rules. Buy at the deadline if you can add a young-ish piece for a good price. But if you can get a haul, they should do that as well.

This team isn’t an aging, mature team ready for a Cup run. Keep winning transactions.

That means if someone is willing to overpay for Strome, as teams often are at the deadline, they should do it.

Team morale is the reason. In a vacuum where only asset management matters, sure, maximize your asset. But that’s not how it works in real life. If your team works hard to put themselves in strong playoff position and the GM makes the team worse, what kind of message does that send to the players?

You don’t have to aggressively buy, but you can’t sell. The time to do that was offseason (like the Buch trade). Now it’s upgrade or self rent.

Agreed. Flat cap is putting a lot of teams in a bind and deep contenders devoid of major flaws are becoming very rare (TB might be the last for a while). I’m not saying we’re suddenly contenders, but it won’t shock me if a few winners over the next few years are later claimed to be some of the “worst” cup winners in a long time. It was almost the Isles, and the Caps just a few seasons ago.

I remember Vally said a few weeks ago, “Hockey is 40% luck.” Idk if it’s 40%, but there’s certainly a pretty high luck factor, especially over a game and even a series.

Given how tight things have become with the flat cap, we’re likely going to see some pretty flawed cup winners over the next few years. It was almost the Isles, which would’ve been pretty ridiculous. It doesn’t mean we’re contenders, but it does mean that “40%” luck factor is going higher.

They will get some whether Strome is here or not.Again, it depends on what you are getting. For one middling pick? Fine, keep him.

For a first and a prospect who projects to be a first liner someday? Malpractice not to accept that haul.

There is no argument to be made that 12 playoff games instead of 6 is more valuable that a 20 year old future 60 point winger, just none at all. That’s insanity.
If you're in fantasyland, why stop with a 1st and an A prospect for Ryan Strome? Go for McDavid.

I’d take a C under 24 with upside who is handling third line minutes for Strome and not give it a second’s thought.

basically, I’d take another team’s Chytil and hope they could click here with our Ws.

I dont mind this idea at all. There is an in house option here too and thats moving Goodrow to 2c and Kakko to Zib line, Strome on Panarins wing. Atleast with Goodrow our faceoffs should improve

Definitely don't hate it as a short term solution.

Put Goodrow between Panarin and Strome. Then Barron between Lafrenier and Chytil and I think we got something.

Bit, that seems like a post Christmas break move. Curious, with the tweet that we are searching for a top 6 player and the pre Christmas trade freeze, annual unofficial purge, if we see a move for a vet instead of letting the kids ride.

Not really fantasyland if a similar package was offered for an expiring Kreider.
Kreids and Strome are 2 different types of animals as far as skill sets go.
If what teams were willing to pay in the offseason is any indicator, Strome isn’t bringing back a 1st, especially in the next 2 drafts.
Maybe, if some team is utterly desperate and injuries cost them big, strome could possibly return what Zuccarello got, ( without the clauses).
Kreider is pretty unique with his size/speed combo and net front ability on the PP. he was also playoff battle tested. And this was pre-covid cap.
Point is moot, if we are in playoff contention or battling for last spot/spots, they will just self rent him.
Drury isn’t going to purposefully weaken the team heading into the playoffs, and it’s highly doubtful whatever strome would bring back would have a better immediate impact then him.
I’m 99.9% certain we just ride the year out with him now....
Am I happy about it?? No. If I was Drury, I would have moved him at the draft when OTT and Minn were calling and interested.

Kreider was on an inferno hot streak, is a massively better player and Dallas was one of the very few teams buying anything significant and willing to part with anything significant. They're not remotely comparable. They've been trying to trade Strome for 2 years.

I’d be interested in Debrusk but the return should be a combination of Hajek, Gauthier, Reunanen. It’s not going to be anything prolific because he has underachieved for 2 straight seasons.

Is there a chance we trade for MAF? Gallant had him in Vegas, Chicago is struggling, we need a backup G...

Or maybe Braden Holtby? Stars have Oettinger and Khudobin...

Trade Georgiev for Kessel. Call up Kinkaid.

20-93-81
10-16-24
13-72-15
17-21-75/29

Don't know if that team is a serious contender, but if we are being honest with ourselves we aren't in a position just yet to make a big trade. Kessel is a cheap add.

I am not moving Gauthier right now. I am especially not moving him for frankly the same inconsistent player. I would even go as far as to say that Gauthier has been more impactful on a game by game basis over the last 5 games. I have watched Boston. DeBrusk is invisible at times.
