The depth can also be future trade chips. Teams don't like moving young high end talent that are on ELC's. EVERY team needs those guys. It's when they start getting paid when they become available. How does a team like the Rangers capitalize on that? Have A LOT of cheap, good depth that other high end teams would covet to help alleviate a cap crunch and have A LOT of cheap, good depth to keep back-filling once you find those very good to elite players. Oh and draft picks are wild cards and the Rangers may be fortunate to find some elite talent on ELC's themselves by going that route.

People keep looking for a high end young player in a deal. It just doesn't happen. Or it RARELY happens.

Totally agree, need to collect as much young assets as we can, we'll get to that point where we're ready to compete, then buy off the top talents that will be available through trade.

I think some people forgot or too young to remember, Neil Smith didn't trade Richter, Leetch, Doug weight, Tony Amonte, Kovalev, Todd Marchant, etc for Messier - we were able to get him for one roster player and 3 highly touted but not our best prospects, because of great depth.

They’d have to be pretty stupid to do that

Why? Laine is a streaky, totally one dimensional player right now. Yes, he's one of the best pure scorers in the world as well but it's not always about having the "best" guy on your team. Sometimes the "right" guy is enough. Connor plays extremely well with Scheifele and Wheeler and will be less expensive to sign than Laine. Ehlers is one of the most underrated wingers in the NHL and is on a bargain deal. Wheeler is Wheeler.

It's the same principal that we've bandied about here with Kreider and Panarin. Deal Kreider for assets and sign Panarin, right? Jets could sign Connor and Stone, then deal Trouba for another forward and deal Laine for a top echelon blue liner or package of roster players to balance their cap and fill holes. Laine for $9M or a top 4 D and 3rd line winger for $7m? Seems insane but when you have Connor, Stone, Ehlers, and Wheeler in your top six it's not that crazy of a thought.

If Connor is a complimentary wing, so is Kreider. Connor is on pace for his 2nd straight 30 goal season at 22.
Kreider is an elite play driver. Connor...isn’t. At all. He’s arguably a liability defensively.

He plays with Scheifele and Wheeler. I don’t think it’d be a stretch to say he’d barely break 50 pts with the Rangers

Though we didn't have the web of free agency we do now, the whole situation is very reminiscent of what happened with Brett Hull, Calgary and St Louis back in 87-88.

Calgary won the cup the next year but do you think they ever regret that trade? Pretty sure they did ;)

He can create offense on his own but yeah he's not a catalyst, in fact he disappeared offensively for I believe it was 10 games where he didn't record a point this year that's not the kind of guy you give up four valuable assets for.

Laine at 9M >>>>> a top-4 d and 3rd liner for 7m

Laine is 20 years old and despite struggling this year is still about to put up 30+ for the third straight season.

If one extremely streaky season is enough for the Jets to part ways with him, well, then good luck to them moving forward.

Four?

How much value do you think Pionk and Buchnevich have?

Very similar situation potentially. Amonte in 94, too. Still, it's a hard league to win in. Always a bridesmaid but never a bride.

In a vacuum I agree with you. With a roster like Winnipeg's I don't think it's as cut and dry.

Hayes, Zucc, Pionk, Buch, Andersson, Lindgren and Birckley for Laine.

Feel the Bern

Seriously though, I feel Laine would benefit greatly from a player like Hayes. Little is obviously not the answer.

What prospect would we be looking at for Hayes from WPG? Vesa + pick?

I'm confused. We are on the same page on agreeing that this team needs high end talent, but you don't seem to like my suggestion. I'm not mad or upset, I just don't follow...
i completely agree, but connor doesnt do it for me thats all. especially not for a first, nils, pionk, and buch

complimentary isn't meant to say he isn't good but that he is the result of playing with scheifele and wheeler. if you take him away from them and expect him to be the go to guy on a line will he produce?

see i understand what your saying, but boston's prospect pool is weak and there is a difference between trading players like hayes for a first and a fringe prospect and gaining depth

i just dont see acquiring any of bostons prospect as something i want to do

I'd be pretty interested in a young player like Donato for sure.

Jack Studnicka would be the guy I ask for from Boston if we're sending Hayes there. Studnicka has been one of the best CHL players recently, and he's from Adam Graves hometown ;)
